SP x2 on Win. XP
Did anybody already installed X2 on XP? I had to rebuild my music computer from ground up after 2 out of 3 hard drives failed, and make a mistake to partition my C drive. Now I have about 6 Gb left on C drive. It is running disk defragment as we talk and will probably free few more Gbs. I uninstalled SP8.5, but still have X1 installed. I am wondering if I need to uninstall X1 before I attempt to install. I do not want to take my chances in case X2 is not working on XP well. X1 never worked well- I had crashes almost daily. While my music computer is 8 years old, it has 3.6 single Pentium and 3 15,000 RPM SCSI hard drives that were replaced less then a year ago. I also had to replace a Motherboard and reinstall the Windows. I should of try to install later OS when I had a chance, but I was told that hardware may not handle it- any way... Should I uninstall X1 to free space? I am worrying about shared plugins folder and other shared utilities that may be damaged by uninstall. I have sound banks for Rapture and Elastic- I do not want to make this already unstable system worse. Any thoughts? Thank you.

I know it's an obvious answer, but please get a new PC. Windows 8 is out next week and will hopefully be pre-installed on new machines (such as Dell). Put the dog down, even a cheapo Dell PC will fare better. Oh and no it isn't supported: http://www.cakewalk.com/page.aspx/Free-SONAR-X2-upgrade Cheers...

If you insist on XP 32 bit and old school parts, then stick with Sonar 8.5. $ 500 software doesn't run well on a $50 computer.

I am looking forward to Windows 8, however, I would like to get new hardware next summer, when they figure out what they actually need to optimize Win. 8. The systems available now are still Win. 7 systems. I do not expect major changes in processors by next summer, but general configurations may improve as manufacturers gain experience building systems for Win 8. I also want to get touch-sensitive monitors, and right now I can not afford it. I am in school and all my money go to pay for tuition. I can not even make music as much as I would like to. In defence of my old computer- It is $4000 Dell Precision workstation. When you buy something at that price, you expect it to work for years. And now it has new motherboard and hard drives. If I could replace the processor, I would. lol. I am not that savy. Just trying to make it till the next summer. It is still nice system. 3.6 clock speed used to cost a lot of money and it doing what it supposed to- I think so- lol. It feels better than my Core duo internet computer. Also I would not make this mistake again to invest that much money in to the workstation. I was pressured to convert to Mac, but their systems are all over 5k for basic configurations- I am not doing it again. I thought- Precision workstation would work forever. Not the case. Acts just like any junky Windows machine. It is frashly reinstalled and tuned now with all support software and drivers- I went trough a nightmare with it, trying to save my music with hard drive failures, and recently- my back up drive failed as well. But that is ok. Got new one. I am having hard time to view this sistem as $50 computer after all investment and repare done on it.

Pretty sure you will need way more than 6 gig. Just the temp setup files (unpacked from the 02...partx.exe files) use more than that. Can you move your swap file to another partition temporarily?

I have X1 installed- the question was- should I uninstall it before trying X2? To me, the newer, the better- they should improve it, right? And all Windows OSs back- compatable, meaning- they have the same core.

What's the SWAP file? When I uninstalled SP 8.5, I did not get any space. But I am thinking, if I uninstall X1, would I get space? Right now after defrog, I got 9.7 Gb.

However Sock Monkey is right, and so am I. Let go or stick within your limitations. > When you buy something at that price, you expect it to work for years. Not for 8 years, and even Windows XP itself is no longer supported by Microsoft. And no it's not worth $4000, Sock Monkeys estimate is far more accurate. So your PC cost $500 a year, you had pretty good value. And what you've already experienced/written seems reason enough as well. Let go or continue the pain (or use older version of Sonar as Sock Monkey suggests, but if you do prepare to experience more pain). Cheers....

scook It is not necessary to uninstall X1 to install X2. WHen you only got 6 gigs to play with it is...... The only thing I can come up with for the op is buy a USB Hard drive a 1000 gigs is like 100 or so bucks..... install it in that location.... You'll have to always keep it plugged in but you'll have space .... If you can even get the thing to run on xp If not you got the extra space For your 8.5

I have USB hard drive- it is 2 TB. I also have 3 other hard drives, D, E and G in this same system- how can I install X2 on another drive? I remember I had the same problem on my old system and I was changing installation passway- not very good idea. Why in a world I partitioned it- who knows. That other part is G drive now and has like 50 Gb free. Note that SCSI drives only go up to 145 Gb.

Doesn't the advanced install give you option to install SONAR anywhere you want?

Moving swap file: Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Performance [Settings] -> Advanced -> Virtual Memory [Change]. Then choose no paging file for your C drive, then choose "system managed size" for your other drive or partition that has a lot of space. Then [OK] out of all that and reboot. Depending on how much Windows was using for your paging file, you will now have that much more space on your C: drive. After install, you can probably set it back again if you want, or leave it there until you get your new machine. Cakewalk says no support for X2 on XP.

That is the system restore space you refering to, right? Sounds like a good idea, not sure what you mean by "then choose "system managed size" for your other drive or partition that has a lot of space."- will it let me set system restore on another drive? So far I am downloding content to partitioned side of drive. Any ideas how much space would I need for install? I used to run Emagic Logic 5 from another drive (for the same reason). Would it be ok to install Sonar on D drive? (If there an option to do that). The shared plugins folder is on C drive, but I can rescan plugins. My computer used to store most VSTs in Emagic/Logic shared plugins folder any way.

XP is completely unsupported with SONAR X2. Future updates of X2 will not even install on XP so its not worth the trouble of installing IMO.

I do not know the considerations company has to make to decide not to support an OS, and I do not understand the differences in programming behind the different versions. All I know is that until recently you could still order XP computers for business use and many industries, such as Healthcare still use XP. I just have to give it a chance and see what happens. I will let you know if it works. And why in a world the company would release updates that would not install on OS that still owned by half of the world? Is there a research data that shows how many users in the world still have XP? It is easy to say, just get new computer with Win 7 or 8. I could afford the computer, but then- the sound cards- the drivers are not supported on new OS. This means I have to change my IO system. I am looking in to it, but right now I can not do it. I still use M-Audio Delta 1010, Helix Phonic 18 and M-Audio Fast Track Ultra. Emagic Unitor 8 for MIDI. Many of you here not even know what that is. It is 8 In/Outs MIDI Time Piece. There is no drivers for that- the company is not exists. So I am looking at like 10K to rebuild everything- why would I do that to accommodate one “crashy” program? And I am just a small studio- I am sure there people who invested much more in to their hardware and not going to change everything because Cakewalk decided not to support legacy OS. Thanks.

It's not system restore; it's virtual memory support. When you see that dialog, you will find out how much space your pagefile is using on C:, and hence whether its worth pursuing. The install requires >6 gig for temp files which you will get back in the end, plus whatever gets permanently installed. I understand you want to do this on XP only temporarily until you can get a new machine and that you may wish to carry forward the data on your other partition. I.e. your disk drive can be added to your new computer. Is it not true that if you buy a W7 computer now your W8 upgrade is free or very low cost?

Good to know, Noel. I'd add what you have said on to the requirements page as people will still attempt to run X2 on XP. It happens with many other products. I know it's their own risk but 'unsupported' gets treated as 'give it a go, what's the worst that could happen'. I'm on XP but wouldn't have risked X2.

XP isn't even supported by Microsoft any more.. I understand your frustration but at some point the latest and greatest software will not run on "older" unsupported operating systems.. When I finally upgraded from Guitar Studio 2.0 to Sonar 8.5, I bought a new desktop computer running W7 and a new soundcard. It wasn't free but these days, not that expensive (everything being relative of course).. I hope you'll be in a position to upgrade your computer soon!

I installed X2 on a fresh install of XP SP3 last night and screwed around with it for a while and it SEEMED to work fine. But, that's not saying much right now since I haven't really dug into it yet. I wasn't going to install it on that machine since I know it's on it's death bed, but I got too antsy and did it just to see. I'll dig in deeper tonight. If nothing else I'll at least be familiar with it.
