SP2 on Win. XP Update

I wanted to post it as an update to our earlier discussion about usability of XP OS and SP X2. I would like to report that it installed with no advers events. No errors, user control issues, failures, missed files and any kind of problems. It accepted all serials and I was able to open it and load Ses. Dr 3, Z3ta, and Rapture full version. It shows Le in soft synth too. I did not have to rescan plugins, it did it when open program. I was able to open X1 project and it worked almost trough entire song. And then I had audio drop out about 5 mins. in to the song. The screen fully refrashed, turning white, and then recovered. The song I was using has frozen Ses Dr 3 tracks, Rapture and Z3ta. The tracks were already frozen, so I did not get to run the soft synth all together in active state, but I did test few other soft synths that were working. The crash it produced was not related to any actions on my part- it just dropped out. I did not have to restart, but it took about 5 minutes for it to recover on its own. I am generally satisfied with this behavior. I had dropouts before. It actually droped out on me first when my C drive was going out, since then this system experiemces random dropouts. Now what concerns me is that cakewalk rep stated that future updates would not be installable on XP. That is somewhat weird. Why wouldn’t they be installable? There is big difference between “not installable” and “not supported”. I would hope that the updates would be compatable with XP at least until they fix main bugs and instabilities.

I am running X2 here on XP with more or less no issues; some crashing in projects that started in X1 but not much else, and it seems to roll along nicely.

I believe Noel said in another thread that MS's runtimes will not even install under XP so moving forward to Win8, when that happens, will mean making it uninstallable under XP. It's unfortunate I guess but really it's time we caught up with the times... my laptop runs Win7 and it's superb, very solid, there's not really any reason to stay with XP at this stage except that I've been too lazy to bother going through the rigamarole of upgrading everything, and X1 ran great under XP so there was not much pressure. This first version of X2 seems quite usable but I'm not going to get uppity about it - the reality is they have to move on to Win8 and that means breaking XP compatibility.

So it goes. They did make it clear before we purchased that it was not ever going to be supported, so we can hardly complain - caveat emptor and all that. The fact that it installs and works at this point is a little bonus, gives us time to wait until Win8 drops and skip Win7 if we choose to... though Win7 will probably be available pretty cheap after that as well, as an alternative, if it turns out that 8 will not install on this old machine...

It sounds like Win8 will run on any machine that can run Win7. I'm also on XP. I think I'll wait until the Win8 Upgrade Assistant is available next month and see if my laptop can go to Win8. The good news is that the XP to Win8 upgrade will be only $40.
