“SPAIN” collaboration featuring spacey & notnat... ... (RE-MIXED)

This version of  Chick Corea’s “Spain” features Michael Hendley (spacey) on guitars, and me on keys... Enjoy...

Remixed version... without prelude,
Drums bumped a bit, Piano and lead guitar EQ'd slightly... Lead guitar ambiance fx removed...

This was performed just beautifully. Exceptional guitar playing Frank, and Michael your playing on the keys just sounds amazing.

    i've always dug this song..
but there's something strange and synthetic sounding about this particular cover....
it's almost as if all the backing tracks are sequenced instead of played....

the soundclick player doesn't help much, it makes the sound very flat an undimensional...

i don't care for the sound of the main keyboard part, but i love the playing.

i guess i'm curious about how this was recorded....

Love Chick and this is a great version of his classic .....  FANTASTIC PLAYING .....
Guitar playing is really well done. Who's playing the Bass ? Stanley ?

Bucky and John Pizzarelli do a great guitar version of this.

    Thanks for listening guys...
This was an interesting process… I heard a short solo guitar version of this by Michael, and since I used to play the song years ago in a rock/jazz fusion band, I suggested we collaborate… Except for the guitars, all the parts were entered from my midi keyboard, (using all of my fingers and thumbs) directly on individual midi tracks in Sonar, I quantized, looped and step edited everything… It took a lot of time and work… If I were a better keyboard player it would have been a lot easier… I used DemPro for the bass sound, and Session Drummer III, The Rhodes sound came from my Roland XP-60 and a Yamaha Mu-100R… The flute sound is from a Yamaha PSR2000…

Michael and I had to compromise on the speed and timing of the song, and eventually he sent me a midi sequence created with his midi guitar, that helped me sync up to his groove…

It was an ambitious project, but fun…

Hey guys, this sounds great. Very ambitious for sure. Just got into Chick about five years ago. Knew his work from Miles Davis.

I think this track is great and you didn't even have to pay the orchestra to clap.

I struggled through most of the song... But then? Oh I can hear you there toward the end? I can identify your style, even amid some of the other "stuff" that's going on. Good job Frank! I can't say much about the non-Frank parts of the song...

    JSGlen- thank you...but I can't play keys. :)

Batsbrew-"it's almost as if all the backing tracks are sequenced instead of played.... " not sure how I made the guitar part sound that way. Maybe it was the tremelo.

Tap- thank you...but in all honesty, have you ever played a gig and felt like you did the worst playing of your life and everything just seemed off? And people tell you it's the best they ever heard ya play?

jsykes- I missed the clapping part too.

Janet, Scott, Shad, Mark, Jimmy, hornplayer- I had a very tough time but it was a great fun time working with Frank.

Frank- thanks for putting up with me. And this being the first time I heard the tune-as with everything I've heard you create, you're a gift and sure glad you're here.

This sounds like it was real hard to do.  The flute is super convincing. The rhythm section of bass and drums is super buried and I would like to hear it a nudge louder.

Great playing on the ax by Spacey. Wish I could pick like that.

I was hoping Michael would play some flaiminco guitar on the prelude... Anyway I'm about to do a major re-mix, and I'd be interested in your opinion...

really nice work, guys!  this is definitely different from your "style" frank, but hey, I think it's important to venture outside of "the box" occassionally!  and you've pulled this off really well.  REALLY nice guitar, Michael!  excellent playing

and I agree with james - the flute is really good sounding there.  you say that's from a PSR2000?  wow.  did you record that directly or was that MIDI and sent back thru?  did you add reverb from the keyboard or were all FX done in Sonar?  what FX did you use on the flute?  I'm really interested in that because it sounds marvelous!

spacey, i didn't mean the guitar parts...
i don't consider them 'backing tracks', tho i guess at times they ARE backing up the keys on rhythm items...

I think the shortcomings of this tune I'm resposible for. I let the "atmosphere" here get to me.
Frank was nothing but a very cool guy and offered great advice in hopes of moving forward. I was very down and stated it would probably be the last thing I ever did here and I should probably get back to writing.
He tried to continue as stated, with the additional parts...I mentioned I couldn't even keep track of where beat 1 was...very unprofessional of me. I am very sorry I let things get to me. No excuse.

But thank you guys very much for the compliments and Batsbrew I should have added to "tremelo" ...with " lack of feeling". My concern was that I performed mechanically and it made it into the parts. I knew your ears could pick that up.

James- thank you very much my friend.

LpMike75- thanks for listening and commenting.

Beagle- You should have heard the midi guitar flute I sent to Frank! He was so cool about letting me know the tune could use a flute..and still needed one! I laughed. I am impressed with that Yamaha flute of his, and he can play the thing!

was that from a breath controller attached to the keyboard???  I've been very curious about those things!

I think we all were a little bummed out by the vitriolic atmosphere here lately...

I played the adlibbed “Sweet Flute” licks directly from the PSR-2000 during the chorus… No wind controller, or fx…
    It’s a pretty convincing patch…

    I've just uploaded a RE-MIXED version...

Nice...but i agree with James the percussion needs to come up quite a bit...

So i`m hopin Frank is gonna add in the Al Jarreau vocals to put this one over the top.
