SPLAT users: what is your favorite compressor? And why?
Just curious, which "in the box" compressor do you all like the best? I'm talking primarily about compressors that come with Sonar. What is it that you like about it? Pros & cons? If you happen to have a 3rd party software compressor that you a really crazy about, that's not off limits for the sake of this conversation, either. I'm just really curious as to everyone's thoughts on the various compressors. I'm still trying to decide on which one I like the most. I use the one in the ProChannel quite a bit, but I use some of the others, too, and just got curious. Thanks for any thoughts!
Clark SONAR Platinum, Win10 x64, i5 quad-core, 16GB RAM, Focusrite Scarlet 18i20g2, other stuff too boring to list (cheap tube pre, mid-range mics, etc)

The Prochannel comps are all really good IMO. PC76 on just about anything. The CA-2A on drums and acoustic guits and the PC4K on overheads and busses etc - anything where you don't want to raise the noisefloor but just tuck the signal in a bit.. I always start with them and then go outside if I think I need something else. Outside of SPLAT recently discovered the Nomad Factory AMT Max Warm. Supposedly a mastering compressor but it kills on Vox. Eventide Ultrachannel also has great comp options but it gets a bit flakey sometimes. I try to find new plugs all the time to stay fresh but those are the ones I know will do the job. And Concrete Limiter - cant's beat that thing on the master buss. Waves makes something called the Infected Mushroom Pusher - sorta like a channelstrip on steroids... or some other stimulants! Very aggressive but brilliant. But then, that's just me :O)

I use the CA-2A a lot. I’ve even got the Mac AU version if it and prefer it to Waves LA-2A model.
The Concrete Limiter is excellent - another Cakewalk processor that I think would be worth expanding into a VST and AU plugin.
Other than that, 1176 emulations are my "go to". Cakewalk's and Waves don't sound quite the same, but both are good and very easy to use. Rather like the original hardware that simplified compression into a small number of controls that make it hard to get a really bad result.
And the Sonnitus compressor might be old but is pretty good, if a bit "characterless".

Each compressor does a job well but not always all jobs well. The CA-2A: I find it to be great with a lot of things but in my opinion it shines on Vox and bass. I use Softube compressors for guitar. The summit EQ/Comp does both really well. As does the FET compressor. I use Waves SSL G Bus compressor for most of my Buses.

My favorite bus compressor is The Glue. I'm sure there are comparable SSL style compressors available but I cannot fault this one. It goes on my master bus immediately. But it's also great on guitars and for parallel compression on drums.
I also love the VC-76 and VC-2A from NI, their 1176 and LA-2A emulations. VC-76 is great for aggressive compression and VC-2A is a no brainer for any kind of macro smoothing. Both are great on vocals, in fact a great compression chain is the VC-76 followed by the VC-2A, just 2 or 3 dB of gain reduction on each.
Fabfilter Pro-C is also a go to whenever I need to experiment with a lot of different compression strategies. It's like a Swiss Army knife of compression.
Supercharger GT by NI is fantastic whenever you need to compress the left and righ channels independently, and also for mid/side enhancement.

I just keep going for that Sonitus one. But I do a lot of ducking with it so it's here and there, listening to sends. I use it for that purpose because it feels like it might not burn cpu doing some vintage emulation and in just ducking it does not have to. For other tasks I don't use comps that came with Sonar. I tried to use the prochannel once and just can't for workflow reasons. I've always right clicked the fx bin, can't help it.

Of the stuff that comes with Sonar, I use the 1176 emulation ProChannel module a lot. I use the CA-2A even more, but I bought that as an optional extra, and I can't remember if it was ever give away as part of the standard package. It should be, it's kind of essential, IMO. Agree with Chuck about it's usefulness for vocals and bass in particular.
I've been using the new (or perhaps "recent" is a better word) multiband compressor more and more for serious work. And I like the SSL emulator bus compressor a lot for parallel compression on certain things.
I also bought the S-Type channel compressor module a while back, but I find I never use it.

A different way of answering this would be: I like my compressors in the ProChannel. It seems intuitive to me to have them baked into the channel like on a really good desk. Yet another way to answer would be: my default channel compressor is the 1176 emu, and when sketching out an initial mix, every channel will have that or the CA-2A. Other things will be used if and only if necessary.

If you want to try something that “makes” you think out-of-the-box, try the Kush Audio VSTs. I recommend the UBK-1 for compression. After you get the hang of it, you’ll wonder how you ever got along without it.

I have used the Sonitus multiband on a lot of 2 trk live sound recordings for taming bass and whatever it is doing to make the upper end sound really nice. And the CA-2A for individual instruments.

I've used the PC ones a lot - 76 and 2A - and I do think they're good. I've been using Reaper more lately, so the VST version of the 2A is nice to have. I *love* Supercharger GT. Just picked up the IK black 76 for "free" (well, the price of a CM digital issue) and you can too if you want - it seems pretty good! I also have used their Fairchild a lot on the master bus, and sometimes the Opto one as well. Also recently grabbed the Hornet multi-comp, which is pretty cool - lets you try a few flavours out and compare them very quickly. I've also got the Ozone and Neutron component plugs which sometimes fit the bill.
But since Waves released the Scheps Omni Channel I've been using it more and more - 3 flavours of superb and remarkably full-featured compression in a highly configurable channel strip format, with equally sophisticated saturation, gate, EQ, de-esser on steroids, and the possibility to lay in another instance of any of them, like for example a different flavour of compression, anywhere else in the chain. Or any other Waves plugin you might like to add. It's just a monster. A channel strip with all the control of individual plugs, including wet-dry and M/S per section. Did I mention it sounds amazing? It's kind of hard to find good reasons not to use it on everything.

My new fave is the API 2500 from Waves. I've never owned the hardware but this plugin does some nice stuff to pretty much anything you put it on. I scarfed it up at one of their $29 sales. Next would be the CA 2A from Cakewalk. As for multiband compressors- the Waves C6, LMB, and L3 Multimaximizer get used a lot.

1. Pro-C2, because it's versatile and precise 2. CA2A, because it's easy to use and great on vocals 3. Kotelnikov, for gentle bus compression 4. Sonitus, because it's easy to dial in a sidechain 5. MJUC, because it's a good compromise between ease of use, nice algorithms and versatility

1.) I level out vocals with Melodyne and then I use a bit compression with the CA-2A, because it's best in leveling IMHO. 2.) PC76: Easy to use and like the fast access in ProChannel, especially when switching between tracks, like its use on guitars and sometimes for light compression on synths or classic instruments 3.) Kotelnikov (free), TB_Compressor and TB_BusCompressor: I like their interfaces, because I prefer to set the values with the mwheel & shift mwheel (they are very precise, best IMO), and they are subtle and don't change color

Interesting question and a lot of great answers. I would add that material matters when selecting a compressor. A compressor that is great for vocals ... may not be great for all vocalists. So any formulas go out the door when choosing an energy management tool. One thing I suggest that folks do with compressors is to become familiar with the technology the tool is modeled after or 'claims' to be modeled after. Each physical and digital tool has characteristics even what we might call 'ballistics' to be considered in their selection. Below is a table I use in one of my classes on energy management, I believe it was based on the compressors available in Logic - but the table illustrates the comparative model technologies, and provides some guidance to their use case. Most important is to become familiar with the predictable behavior of the tool and then confirm with your ears what it is doing. This is the same thing with meters, they should confirm what you are hearing, not telling you what you are hearing.

I use the PC76, Ca2a, PC4K bus comp a lot. Sometimes the PC4K channel comp.
The Ca2a is fantastic.
Bass - Ca2a, sometimes after 1176
Vocals - 1176 followed by Ca2a
Guitar - often the 1176, sometimes even before an amp SIM.
PC4K bus - nearly always on master
PC4K channel - when I can't get the sound I want from other compressors, this can often work. Not as easy to set up, IMHO, but sometimes just works on the right material.
I have other versions of these - Waves, softube etc, but find that I can get the sound/feel I want quicker with the included Cake ones.
Please excuse my writing style- I am on my phone..

Hmm..
On further thought:
I wonder if it is just the Pro Channel workflow that I enjoy.
Since getting Studio One I have been using the Waves plugs more, and have been perfectly happy with the results, but if/when I move back to Sonar, I imagine that I will fall back into using the Cake plugs again.
Perhaps it is just handy having them in the PC.
I also occasionally use Boz's +10DB comp - much like the 4k Channel - when nothing else seems to fit..
I also like the Concrete Limiter - great for bringing up ambience on drums, amongst other things - the bass switch is lovely, too.. I used to use it ALL THE TIME, but use it far less now. I opened up an old project the other day from when it was first released, and it was on almost every track. 😀
Adaptive limiter is very nice for mastering.
Not sure that I understand previous post.

Personally, I think my previous comment is very lame. I apologize to the forum for posting inane ramblings. What I meant to say really, was that I am trying to eliminate compressors in my mixes. Bht, google translate did a very poor job with my French, so please pardon my French. When I use a compressor, sometimes I just use the most convenient one, like in the pro channel, especially whem I am on my laptop, because all I have is cake supplied units. When I want to wade through my plug in menu I really like Pro C, and Black 76, Also. I really like to experiment, so I will try almost anything, and if it sounds bad to me I will switch it out. I think what I mean is that, I choose the compressor to fit the song, so it could take me several iterations to find the one that sounds good to me. Again, I apologize for the ridiculous post. jqs

Almost forgot to list another of my favorite compressors - Vari Comp by Softube (as sold by Native Instruments). It's almost like an LA-2A in its "can't really go wrong"-ness, but you have control over the attack and release. I have no idea what goes on behind the scenes with the innards of this compressor, but it sounds bloody amazing on almost everything. Its "comp" mode is a very low ratio of 1.5:1 so it's very hard to screw your sound up with it really, while its "limit" mode has higher ratios which are program dependant. Sounds very "high end."

I actually quite enjoyed the"ridiculous post" - no harm no foul 😎
I generally have a kind of intuitive approach to these things, as with most things creative. Partly that's because I only half know what I'm doing with regards to the engineering side of all this, and I'm more interested in making more music than I am in buckling down and properly learning the technical stuff, so I kind of play to my strengths which are on the musical / creative side. Maybe that's lazy and I should spend more time shoring up my weaknesses, but I'm in this to have fun and it's more fun, for me, to just kind of dump the blocks on the floor and start making stuff.
So when it comes to compression I'm likely to just pick something that feels right, maybe something new I want to play with or something I haven't used in a while, and try it out and mess with the knobs a bit and see if it makes things sound better. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't but I learn something in the process, or hear something in a new way, that sparks a new idea.
That may not be helpful to someone trying to use the 'right tool for the job', but given how much beautiful and important art has been made over the centuries by breaking rules and misusing tools, I think a reasonable case can be made for my more intuitive, fun-driven approach...
The right compressor is the one you have that makes it sound better, not the one you don't have that you think will magically provide something you think is missing. Make some music with what you have.
He said, talking mostly to himself...

The Klanghelm MJUC appeals to me for this reason, being able to switch between three different compressors in one and keep the same settings really appeals. To learn what it is that makes it sound right. I just use the ProChannel options including the Boz +10, but the MJUC was going to be my next compressor purchase, but then the Scheps Omni deal came up, which also has 3 character compressors with the same settings to switch between am compare. Hopefully I'll start honing my ears so my choices are a bit more controlled and objective than they are at the moment

I usually have the MJUC in the master buss(very lightly), Softube FET on the guitar buss, CA-2A on vocals, Boz +10 on bass, and Kramer Master Tape on the drum buss.

LJB The Prochannel comps are all really good IMO. PC76 on just about anything.
I second that! Pro Channel modules is basically all I need to get a great sounding mix. I tend to stick with just one set of plugins per mix (like just API or only Neve series by Waves), yet most of the time it's Pro Channel ones.
