SSD 5 FREE

In addition to SSD 5, Slate also released SSD5 Free, enabling you to experience a taste of SSD5 with full functionality and one Deluxe 2 Kit for free - it's not an expiring demo.

Smart move by Mr. Slate, but... The UI looks horrible and totally unusable. The kit is okay, just okay. Not impressed with the new SSD5 at all. $145 for this is a joke.

I was just getting ready to post the same thing SW...
Not at all impressed.  This one is a dud, as was the
previous one.  Horrible installation process, set up,
and loading.  Talk about a complete miss.  Not good

I posted on Gearslutz this time last year about the sham of an interface redesign. With all of the innovation happening with VSTs today, it’s a shame they tried to phone this one in based on success of SSD4.

I’m always mystified how this happens considering all of the great software that’s out there, literally telling developers how to do successful design by example.

Studio One 3.5. SPLAT 64.  Win 7 Pro.  Dell 7010, i7 3770, 3.4 GHz, 16Gb RAM.  Tascam US-122 Mk II.  Lotsa other gadgets.

BFD 3 is MILES ahead of these.  It's only competition is
Superior Drummer 3.  Those two are always battling it
out.  I give SD3 the edge due to features, not due to
sound.  They are both spectacular VST's.  Also on par
soundwise, but majorly lacking in features is East West
ProDrummer 1 & 2.  If they had a decent feature set they
would also be in the running.  Sound quality wise they are
formidable.

I like the sounds in SSD4, It does sound good "straight out of the box" but the interface and workflow is horrible. Sounds like the consensus here is the new interface is not that good either. I will give this free version a try and see what I think.

I do suspect that if I am going to spend that amount of money on drums it would be better off going on another SDX while they are currently on sale.

Intel i7 3770K @4.4GHz, 32GB RAM, 240GB SSD System disk, 2 x 2TB and 1 x 1TB (with SSD Cache) HDD. Windows 10,  Sonar Platinum. Roland Quad Capture.

This is so bad.  I had been considering getting SSD4 for the last few years but there was never an offer that made it worth jumping on and SSD5 was always coming soon.  So I was pretty interested to try this free one.  I can't help but think they completely missed on this.  The UI and workflow are pretty awful.  The install is pretty painful too.  And at least this free kit sounds poor at best.  Do the full kits sound better?  The expansion packs are interesting but I'm not sure I'd want to deal with SSD5's UI to use them.  They would have to sound amazing to make it worth it.

Compared to anything else I have (EZDrummer 2, AD2, SD3, Kontakt, Battery, UVI) this just doesn't even come close.  I guess I need to figure out the cheapest way to get on the BFD3 bandwagon now.  I'm actually considering uninstalling the free one it's that bad.

I was considering CLA expansion, which should work fine OTB, but I like your idea of getting another SDX better. Not sure if I need more drums, though.

Best buy I've made in a while was The Progressive Foundry SDX - now when I load SD3, I immediately use this as my "default" - sounds great I think

That is my two most recent acquisitions. Both are excellent. In fact I have decided now I won't even download the free version of SSD5.

Curious about this one. For people who really dig this (or don’t), what genres or sub genres do you use it for?

Hey Nigel,
Would you, please, share some records you have used this SDX for?

Its very versatile, it probably would not be your first choice for hip-hop or jazz but you could easily use it in a lot of genres, particularly rock.

I've been itching to purchase SD3 however with cyber Monday around the corner wonder if there will be some deals very soon.

If Toontrack does what they have the past few years there should be at least one time they offer an older SDX for under $40.00 on Black Friday. And they have done another close to Christmas. I think last year was Music City SDX and maybe one of the Roots packs. They had the Nashville EZX for $19.00 last year too. I'm hoping for Rock Warehouse or NY Vol. 2 this year.

It's Bass, not Bass.

Usually the MOST you'll get it is half off...so
About $175...or the upgrade from 2 would
be about $99, or from EZ DRummer would
be about $149...minus an offered discounts
