Re: SSD drive question for Sonar DAWs 2014/11/07 12:12:49 (permalink)
I go and buy this huge case and now I'll be filling it with 3 little tiny SSD drives! They will look so small in there! The case is made to hold 3 SSD, 4 SATA and 4 DVD drives.

Today I unplug from the internet and install to the studio. All seems working fine except it makes one small beep on boot up? Can't find any info about what one beep means. The BIOS LED shows AO which says in manual  it's initiating IDE? There is no IDE connection on the MOBO.

The big case! Look at the tiny little SSD drive,, I've since the picture added my 2 Sata hard drives in the bay above. There's a little bay for SSD drives at the bottom but I used the adapter they included to give more room for air flow. You can see the BIOS LED --AO. The manual for the Gigabyte MOBO is not very forthcoming with info. I guess they assume you actually know what your doing. There are a lot of tiny wires to hook up etc and it takes a bit of head scratching to figure this all out. I've actually never fully assembled a computer from the ground up. Mostly just re builds and swapping parts. About $800 including the OS. Could have shaved a few bucks off if the sales where better.

Thanks Jim,
Off to run the de-bug now.
"I've got a Samsung 840 EVO "Samples" drive that's over 90% full...
Sustains 500+MB/Sec on reads."
This is after the de-bug or without the de-bug?

Everything went just fine!
Did have an "oh sh*t" moment when the computer re-booted and the software couldn't "find" the EVO.
Re-booted again and all went well.
500gb drive, 80% full, took just under 2 hours for the whole process.
Thanks for your help Jim, you're the best!
So this begs the question; is SSD a "mature" platform.
I took from early conversations that we should NOT defrag, overwrite, etc.
Basically write once (hence the sample drive), and leave it alone.
Or is it just the MLC technology used to lower the price the thing to avoid?
My mom always said; "don't pay much, don't get much"...

The big case!...

A big case is always good because it allows better air circulation. But that PSU looks like its internal fan is right up against the bottom of the case. If so, that might be a problem.

I went through the process for an evo 1TB. It did take a few hours but was successful.

Just curious, is there any point in leaving the performance restoration program installed on my machine now that I am finished with the process?

Purrrfect Audio DAW here.  Wow!...

Well it's a firmware tool, so on the off chance they release another firmware update? It does no harm being there really. But you probably right it will never be used again for a bug fix one would hope. Make me think the next drive will be a Toshiba or ?

I was under the impression that it was a FIX only tool. Not an actually firmware update, since those you do using Samsung SSD Magician (an actually really good tool).

Still wish other brands would release fixes and firmware updates, half of them do nothing, i keep my opinion about Samsung SSD, no other brand can touch them ;)
