SSDs & Sonar
I have seen several posts related to SSDs & Sonar. I am using 6.2 but plan to upgrade to X1. I thought it might be helpful to share my setup (details are in my signature at the bottom). This works like a dream: OS & Sonar installed on 1st 120GB SSD ($230) Samples, loops, etc. installed on 40GB SSD ($93) Workspace files (.cwp, audio, template files, etc.) are on 2nd 120GB SSD ($230) As workspace projects are completed, I move them to the 600GB RAID 1 for storage. With my audio-midi workflow, space has not been an issue, but if it became one, I could move projects to the RAID and pull them over to the workspace drive when needed (or just work on them on the RAID). Backups: I use a 1TB WD USB external with Rebit backing everything up (it even backs up all my drives plus the OS, and I can boot from it). I take this to work (my real job) from my studio at home, for offsite backup. I also use CrashPlan for both offsite and P2P backup. I backup project files to CrashPlan Central, and at the same time, backup to extra drive space at a work server and to a friend's Mac (with permission for both of course). Counting Rebit, that is 4 backups. CrashPlan and Rebit are awesome. I know SSDs are still evolving and are more costly for limited space right now, but you can't imagine how much easier and faster my workflow is with this setup - there is no going back for me. As always, your mileage may vary. Best of luck to all!

Whoa!!! I have a killer setup, too, but I think I like yours even better!!! I have heard a lot of bad things about using RAID, but my RevoDrive uses RAID 0, and I have no other issues. I can't even blink and my OS is loaded, and programs are smoking fast. It tests in ATTO at well over 500MB/s. It's incredible what we have now. It seems like yesterday when I had my little Fostex X-15 4-track and 12-bit Roland TR-505 drum machine. I use a 1T WD for recording audio, though. I just have the 2nd SSD for samples. I do need a better backup plan, so thanks for sharing.

(in a good way) One small question: Only 40GB for the sample drive? What do you use? I use Komplete 7, for which I need more than 40gb in space. I'd use the 40gb for projects and use the 120gb for samples. Then move projects off to storage.

Thanks for the feedback : ) The beast : ) I was just lucky enough to buy this server from my employer when replacing at work, then I spiced it up with the SSDs. Samples : ) I record vocals, guitars, bass, percussion (cajon, tambourine, etc.) and harmonica live, and currently only use samples for replacing keyboard midi from an old Casio, and midi drums from my Yamaha DTX III Express.

I have only one SSD, but it's the boot drive and has SONAR on it. Data is on two other drives. Because of the increased speed and reliability, I would also never go back to a regular hard drive, and the next drive I put into the system is going to be another SSD.

Newegg.com had a 120Gb Intel SSD normally $200+ on sale for $176 iirc. I just looked and I can't find it now. It seems the prices are really coming down on them. There's an OCZ on sale there now but it's not as good a deal.

Ii'm running Raid 0 SSDs as my boot drive with X1a on it. Neve had a problem so far. Everything is working perfectly so far.

Yeah, I think Komplete 7 is 90 gb, and my EWQL is probably of a similiar amount. I'm definitely thinking of upgrading to a new 1 tb just for samples.

Side benefit: since I installed the SSD as the boot drive 11 months ago, I have had NO BSOD episodes at all. This, on the same system that gave me a BSOD fairly routinely with no other change in equipment except that boot drive.
