SSSSSAAAAAAAWWWWWEEEEEETTTTTTT!!!!!!

I am logging onto the forum with my new Quad Q6600 2.4GHz, 2G DDR2 system!!! I finally got everything running and have a lot of my apps loaded. I have already transfered my current projects to my new machine and loaded sonar. I fired up my latest project and it's running SO much smoother on this system!!! none of the 4 processors are running over 5% with the current project and my one P4 2.8GHz processor (2G DDR) was running at 25%! I'm lovin' it so far! this thing is smokin'!!!!

Herb - ya gotta getcha one of these babies! it's sweeet!

That great news Beagle. I'm assuming from your post that a Quad whatever is a computer? I just can't keep up on all this stuff. But I glad to see that you are very happy with it. Persistence pays off.

LOL! Yes! It's a computer with 4 processor cores on one chip! they run parallel for more processing power (with apps that can use them, like Sonar can!).

yep - still running XP! that's part of what kept the cost down on this thang! ~$460 for a 2.8GHz Q6600 2G DDR2, 500G SATA HD, 128M PCIe Video card, case, 680W power supply and DVDRW. very nice!

Man that's chump change for a screaming computer like that... I'd have to add a monitor... I have XP, so I'd be able to do the same machine...still at a decent cost.

I'm probably gonna do this.... question is when... but more than likely before the end of the year.... computer prices I think will become even cheaper...especially with this wall street mess.... I hear predictions that this may be a really bad Christmas season for retailers this year which equates into really good deals on things for me.

Heck I might even ride to Raleigh next week and hit the music stores (perchance to dream) and hit the computer store right beside the Sam Ash store and see what kind of deals they have.

Glad you got it running, Reece! I was looking at computers the other day and debating about dual core vs. quad core and they actually said quad core isn't recommended if you do mostly midi. Which is mostly me around here, but anyway, I felt good that at least I didn't need to upgrade that right away.

    OK, let's hear some music!

Hey Beage, way to go man it's great having a screaming computer ain't it?? I wanted to ask you, you mention that Sonar takes advantage of the Quad processors; do you know if MC4 does, or what it's processor limits are? it would be good to know for future reference. It really does seem like powerhouse computers are amazingly inexpensive anymore.

Reece did you do the geeks.com thing? If so i was in their showroom last Saturday, they had two pallets of nice quad reconditioned HP units, these are factory machines. I am going that route on my next build, cause almost everything is right there for you.

I'd Seize the day but i can't quite reach it!

Hey, guys! I've been busy transfering, installing, RE-AUTHORIZING things. I did NOT go the way of a cloned drive, that would have worked for some of my stuff, but not all of it. things like GS3 need to be reauthorized on a new machine even if you have a cloned drive because it knows it has new hardware!

Herb - yep - really good deal. but if you ride to Raleigh, where are you gonna put all that stuff to ride back???

Janet - yes, I had read that info from Scott (ADK) as well, but the MAIN thing he said is that you should get the fastest FSB that you can afford and that Dual vs Quad on the same FSB speed will have a little improvement for the Quad. besides, yes, I work with MIDI mostly, but I always eventually bounce all MIDI to audio and MIX in the audio realm. I never mix with softsynths still active in the system. one reason for that is that I've noticed that they don't ALWAYS give the exact same results every time your play the project. I don't like that - I want consistency, so I always bounce to audio and there's no inconsistency in an audio track.

Rick - don't tell her it was ME!!!! dang!!! if your wife is anything like mine, she will hunt me down for corrupting you!!!!!

JD- sure is cool! I've never had a computer with this much power!!! at work I have a Duo 2 and thought it was pretty good! as far as MC goes, I don't know for certain, but I THINK that's one of the functionalities which they disabled in MC for the price. you can find out by looking at OPTIONS>AUDIO>ADVANCED. if it supports multiprocessors there will be an option check box there (if it's greyed out and unchecked that means it's AVAILABLE, but you don't have a multiprocessor to use).

Rob - YEP!!! I've been a compgeeks customer for years! I did have a problem with it when I first got it because the video card that I bought for it didn't work. I've had to return that and am waiting on the replacement. In the meantime, I've borrowed another video card until I can get it replaced.

I've seen those debranded HP's and they look pretty sweet as well! Go for it!!! (just don't tell your wife that I told you to!!!! )

Re: Cloning -- yes you are correct Beage, using the cloning of drives needs to be done ONLY when upgrading a larger drive to the SAME computer. Even Windows itself, is very hardware-specific and will not work on a different chipset and hardware. But if you're gonna move up to a larger drive within the SAME computer - it's the best way to go!

Glad you're loving the new 'puter, Beage! Now, as the saying goes, we expect BIGGER and BETTER things from you....and faster!!!! HaHa No stress THERE, right???

Hey Beage, way to go man it's great having a screaming computer ain't it??
Actually...how noisy is that monster, Beagle? ;)

When I put my PC together years ago, I sourced lots of quiet components from QuietPC.com - BIG heatsink, big, slow fan, no motherboard fan, quiet PSU, and danless GPU heatsink. It's pretty subdued now, but a lot of new PCs come pretty quiet already and totally devalue my investment! However, a 680W PSU, assuming the machine is using a lot of that, could come with fast fans and lots of racket, which would drive me nuts! Is that something you're just happy to live with, or is the volume way, way down as well, making this a dream machine?

I was looking at a new PC recently (at UK prices, so double what you Stateside get offered :() but I was very willing to trade performance for quietness and a decent dual-core could be got running at near inaudible. Although I pulled out in the end; my power usage is for Cakewalk which I don't do enough of to warrant the expense.

ooooooh!!!! that's the beauty, eh? she's OH SO QUIET!!! Well, or she's going to be. My 680W power supply comes with a 120mm super quiet fan. I can barely hear it at all with the covers off. I have a 100mm "frameless" fan on the processor's heatsink and it's super quiet as well. the video card I have borrowed has a fan on it, but the one that I'll be putting in it permanenetly will be fanless.

the system I've been using for the last 2 years with sonar was a dell. that thing sounds like an airplane taking off under load! they designed the case fan to be the ONLY fan in the system and it's a variable speed. when the CPU starts pulling current, that thing really starts getting LOUD!

the only thing that's not quiet right now is the case fan. I only had a regular 80mm case fan to put in it and it's the noisest of all of them, in fact it's noisier than the other 2 put together. so I'm going to have to get me a better case fan to make it quieter. but even with the loud case fan and the fan on the GPU, it's STILL quieter than the Dell!!!

Reece, I was assuming that they would assume you would bounce everything to audio when they made that recommendation! Anyway, I'm not upgrading again for a little while. At least until one of my sons upgrades and I get their cast-offs. LOL

Herb - you just said "ride to Raliegh" so that's the image I got in my head...you carrying a computer, monitor and all on your back riding your bike back from Raliegh! LOL!

Janet - I'm pretty sure the recommendations were not based on bouncing to audio, they were just benchmarking the synth usage. and that's the way I do the rest of the family - we have 3 computers runnng, one for me, one for Beverly and one for the kids. when one of them is in need of replacement, I get the upgrade and they get my old one! The kids' computer is a 4 or 5 year old computer, 1.1GHz with 1G SDRAM. It's just about on its last leg!
