TremoJem Now I am just waiting for the upcoming release of "Sonar X3 Power!: The Comprehensive Guide by Scott R. Garrigus (Apr 2, 2014).
7th May 2014 according to Amazon. I thought I was only joking before about it being just in time for X4 !

I was just looking through these. As I'm completely new to Sonar X3, I went for Elis videos which seem more focused on X3, while the other one said it had 9 hours of videos about X2, and only 2 hours worth for X3.
Will just the ones from Eli, plus the free Sonar University ones be sufficient to help me get fluent with the software? I also plan on buying the X3 power book that Scott is writing.
I also really wanted to study a HND in Music Tech to learn music production, but I couldn't afford to study a second undergrad course so now I'm just going to try and self learn. I already did a minor in music tech some years ago, but it was based on Pro Tools and wasn't really thorough enough on using the software, though I learnt the basics of mic setup and basic waveform editing and sound engineering, so I think self learning will be best now.
Edit - just noticed the above posts about that book not being ready until May. That's unfortunately a bit late if true, so hopefully just the videos will suffice.

Considering for some, the help in Sonar itsle fi enough and some have all of the above resources and still are clueless, the enswer really varies by individuals. No resource could possibly have every anser because someone will always figure workflow tricks even the developers never thought of. I say start with what you have and give gourself time to answer that question for yourself.

Hey, Vab... While I've been muckin' around for awhile, I am just now getting serious, trying to fully explore X3 and establish good habits so I can focus more on creating the songs rather than wrestling with powerful tools. Figure it's about time X3 becomes 2nd nature rather than a search for how to do something.... One thing I'm finding particularly helpful to ME is using dual monitors, playing the vid in one and having a composition I'm working on in the other and repeating the steps in an actual project... for example, on comping and take lanes I did this real time the other night and really got it nailed... actually ended up bringing SWA's sections up first and working on them then Grooves'.... each had a bit of new and in an hour I was compin' automatically... I've watched all the vids lots of times but my dumb ole' brain don't retain it till I'm doin' it real time. Lot's of stuff is fairly intuitive given X3's nice interface but I'm trying to do a lot of muscle memory learing by repetative doing... and with two screens, it's much easier.

Oh I'm already doing that with dual monitors. I watched the Session drummer videos over the last 2 days and remembered everything, just by pausing the videos and practicing the techniques, my only obstacle being that the first video was made using a much older version of Sonar and much of it was too different in the current one.
I mostly self taught myself up to being able to play grade 8+ piano, can play and record almost any new melody and chords by ear, and have lots of lyrics and compositions written, but I was always stuck with being mostly useless at music production software which was holding me back. No longer, I will learn how to do this.
I bought MC6 around 8 months ago, but I was so rubbish at it. I kept trying to record every melody from the piano, spent around 2-3 months and nothing sounded right and needed way too many re takes. Melodyne editor is going to help me vastly with that, plus learning how to use the midi instruments and making loops.
Also either MC6 didn't have, or I just didn't know how to change my projects to a new tempo without having to record everything again. I've already figured out how to do that in Sonar, again mostly with midi and melodyne.
Though its amazing how Sonar X3 has made my 24" monitor seem far too small. One little trick I also found was to move my start bar to the left of the screen, as it was taking me ages to click on anything at the bottom without it popping up all the time.

If you don't have dual monitors, screensets are your friend. When i am mobile and just have laptop, those come in handy.

The SWA X3 video was written as a complimentary video to the X2 one. There is an awful lot that is identical between X2 and X3 (All covered in the X2 vid) and the differences/new features are what are covered in the X3 video- hence the running time differential. Horses for courses I guess, but it's nice to have the choice depending on your personal needs.
