Safe Mode - What is it?

All:
I ran accros a current post suggestiong Safe Mode (Shift Launch) as a possible technique to rejoin a corrupt project and it's data. Very interesting - in a search of the forum I couldn't find any other references to the benefits of Safe Mode other than that. Are there any other cool things Safe Mode can do?

Can it make my mix sound better :)

Safe Mode just lets you load a project with the option to not include effects plugins or soft synths. Many times a plugin will screw up and cause the project to crash or not play or whatever. This lets you find the culprit plug and not load it.

The only thing SM does is force a "load/don't load" dialog for each plugin at project startup. If a project file is truly corrupted, it probably contains gibberish for data and could never be recovered or opened.

For questions that concern the basic functionality of Sonar it's always a good idea to first take a look at the manual or built-in help before searching the forum

In all fairness to DonM, I've used Sonar for years, and never knew about the "SafeMode" I'll go grab my manual, and look for safe mode, but I don't recall anything in there that might jump out at me. I'm not saying it's not there, I'm just saying I don't recall it, and I'd think that would've been something I'd have remembered.

    Edit
Sure as day, Sonar 3.1.1 pg. 598

    go figure.

Thanks for the advice regarding posts basic functionality. I should have explicited stated that I read the manual before posting - the manual also only mentions file opening which I mentioned in my post. I was interested if anyother users in the Silver category as yourself had discovered any other undocumented functionality regarding safe mode operation. I'm sure you know the intracacies of Safe Mode in the OS and I was interested if anything was undocumented. Maybe I didn't consider the post basic functionality - I saw safe mode in the same light as OS safe mode and worthy of more experience than mine. Thanks for your insight

I can see your point - unfortunately Sonar does only what the manual/help says:
    "Safe Mode does the following:
    Opens only the Track view.
Prompts you if you want to open the plug-ins saved with your project. Each plug-in gets a prompt, so you can open some and not open others. "

And no, it doesn't make your mix sound better - only if you chose to not load the mud plugin

    Hey John:

I wanted to ask you something....

I don't know if you remember last month me dealing with M-audio & 16 vs 24 bit driver issues - since that time I've been trying (note the word TRYING) to use a hex editor to view .wav files to 'see' the bit / byte data. I've create one and two and 44,1000 sample .wav files created with Sound Forge and can't for the life of me make sense of the file format to see the data distribution in the file - any ideas.

My 'simple' goal is to see one null byte in 24 byte file that has 16 bytes of data - do you know of a way to do that? I am about to mix a project that I believe is 16 bits in a 24 bit project and I want to decide between dither and truncate.

    Thanks in advance

    -D
