Saffire Pro 40 audio dropouts Sonar X1
I had many problems with this firewire interface mainly because it is firewire but I noticed I only had problems after I updated to Saffire MixControl 2.4. Everytime I open Sonar X1 it lags and when it lags I know it is my interface as the firewire active led light begins blinking then goes solid green. These drop outs are insane and I have no idea how to fix it, I have tried playing around with the buffer size, seems like 512 is somewhere decent. sometimes when I record my mics won't even record while the timeline marker keeps moving, so I have to reset it and play everyhing over again. Anyone have any suggestions? I am running my driver in legacy btw and it is the only way i could run my interface

There is a known issue with the latest drivers for the Saffire series. You might try going back to the 2.2 driver.

If you're using a wireless card (ethernet such as wireles-n), try disabling the card when you work on your audio. I found the focusrite driver particularly sensitive to this issue. I have a client who luckily doesn't do much net stuff and I ran into the issue there. He runs perfectly with the wirelss disabled and enables the wireless when he does need to go online... Keni

Roll back to 2.2. On my LS56 they have the same problem with the Mix control 2.4 Version. Said just go back to 2.2 until they post the next update.

Thank you all, I will go back to MixControl 2.2 ; I was forced to upgrade to 2.4 a while ago so I will turn off my internet connections when I record. After I try out 2.2 again there probably won't be any dropouts :)

My Saffire Pro 40 has developed dropouts, but it's only after it warms up so I have to contribute that to a hardware problem in the unit. It worked good for two years, then it had a power problem, which turned out to be a bad power on/off switch and some firewire connection problems. After replacing the power switch the firewire connection problems went away for almost a year. I don't know what the AC power switch had to do with the Firewire connection but the problems disappeared after replacing the flakey power switch. My Saffire Pro 40 will be 3 years old in February and it's out of warranty. The company in N. Las Vegas that services Focusrite lists a "typical" repair cost of $224, but with the particular problem in mine I would suspect they would just replace the main board (I'm an ex amplifier tech and that is what I would do). Given the cost of labor (they charge $100 per hour with two hour minimum) and their estimate of $200 for a new main board, that is $400 (estimated) plus shipping costs. I only paid $429 when I bought it.

I got my pro40 in early 2009, the drivers have gotten better performance wise. My first headphone output has gotten scratchy. Thank goodness nothing else. Thats crazy about it warming up and the dropouts start. Honestly this will be my last firewire interface. Sorry you guys are having trouble. Mattstream, do you have a backup image of your system you can roll back to?

Not much of a backup, but I try to work with what I can..the drop outs come and go but it really is annoying they make sonar lag a bunch..was strange cause it used to work perfectly fine..firewire is very glitchy, sensitive too. I wish these companies would upgrade to something faster to atleast USB2.0. those repairs seem pretty hefty. i just got my interface during june 2011 so this is disappointing..i have a feeling my issues have to do with the firewire if its nothing with the drivers.

Focusrite has some suggestions for Optimizing your PC for Win 7. Look them over and see if anything they suggest helps http://www.focusrite.com/answerbase/en/article.php?id=1071 Does the Alienware have a T.I. Firewire chipset. That seems to be the crux of many Firewire problems, with the DICE II Firewire chipsets (what the Saffire Pro 40 has). The DICE/DICE II are used by most Firewire audio interface units.

mattstream, check and try a different firewire controller driver. uninstall first, change to default and reinstall 2.2. maybe that will help?

I do some part-time PC support. I've run into a lot of problems with Belkin products. I do not recommend Belkin to my clients.

I would double check the firewire card to make sure it uses a a compatible chipset; if I'm not mistaken, Belkin sells at least one budget firewire card that lacks the proper chipset. FYI, Focusrite just released a new version of the mix control, 2.4.1; you might as well try it on the chance it could help.

Here everything runs well with the Saffire Pro 40 with ASIO drivers and 160 samples buffer. The chipset question (TI!)is a basic requirement for a professinell working interface like the pro 40,you know. Let me remind you, that a professionel audio PC is from the most experts required to run without internet,w-lan, firewall,net........a.s.o. cause of the resources it needs.

I am still having audio dropouts...are there any issues about having the audio output on my Saffire unit too high causing dropouts? I believe my card is fine ( i couldn't find another express card here ) since it runs without any errors showing up. Edit: This is so infuriating!! So much money spent to buy recording gear and none of it seems to work properly! I don't know if it is Sonar, or my Saffire device. Sonar's "Run/Stop the audio engine" blinks for a second then it quits working and sonar lags like crazy, then drop out. Any fixes? I am willing to record a video of my setup and show you guys the situation.

Maybe you have the same problem as I have with mine (or used to as it's been uninstalled and put to collect dust). I have the approved Intel chipset and didn't have problems for several years. Then I had a problem with the unit powering on and connecting. It seemed to work OK on the second Firewire port on the Saffire Pro 40 and it would sometimes power on the first time I turned it on and others it took several on/off cycles to get it to power on. I found that the AC power on/off switch was bad and after replacing it, the unit seemed to settle down. Then it started intermittent drop outs after it warmed up and finally deteriorated to intermittent drop outs at any time not just after it warmed up. I'm through with Firewire, I bought a Roland Octa-Capture (USB) it's working great so far.

Like many others I had this issue. I reinstalled mix control 2.2 but that didn't solve the issue, I then made sure I was using the Legacy Firewire option as suggested by Focustrite, which was in place but still not working. I then went to the driver properties and noticed although I had re-installed mix control 2.2 the later driver than comes with 2.4 remained in place (as it was a later version I guess). I simply deleted the newer driver, reinstalled 2.2 again an BAM everything came to life. So, I'd suggest going to device manager right clicking on the device, select Properties, Driver and check which version it is. Although, I noticed someone states 2.4.1 is available now which may superceed this fix. Cheers Dean

Why I left firewire as a possible interface for audio: 1. Very sensitive to quality of cable used 2. Very sensitive to tiny tension either direction to start malfunction. Mostly due to conncectors are really poor design as I see it - very long contact surface making a minor bend cause disconnect. Compare to network TP cable connector and how much you can bend in all direction without failure. 3. Too much cpu used just to keep audio up - in my case 7% overall on an modern i7(20% on one core which was the best after several days of experimenting) Just powering up firewire soundcard use up this cpu. I could think of better things to use it for like running software and plugins. 4. It seems that PC and Windows 7 works worse than Mac It makes no sense struggle with technology when you need inspiration and focus on musical stuff. I tested Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 and Impact Twin from TC Electronics. Pro 40 ran very nice for me with S8.5 but the other arguments above made me return it. Otherwise very nice sounding preamps. Firewire seems like outdated technology to me.

Hello... I Have a Saffire PRO40 under Win 7 Pro 64, and got not any problem, of course with MixControl 2.2... I use a buffer size of 64, and no glitch at all after many work hours too.. Be careful... I however previously had problem when I updated the Video Card drivers ( nVidia ), so, like drops and so on... So glitches may came from other badly written drivers hooking too much processing time, and not letting the Saffire driver to run as scheduled... Try too look at latest drivers you installed, and revert them, may be the problem is there... I never update any drivers, only windows updates, and since then, I never had a single problem... Hope this helps Alex

I run a Pro24 purchased two years ago, Win7 64bit on an i7 box. Mixcontrol 2.4.1, upgraded from 2.4 which gave me the delay response problem with track and metronome arming. I'm using a cheap Vantec $24 FW PCIe card (VIA chipset) from TigerDirect. As Dean said above, double check the driver versions against what Focusrite says should go with which version. They often get 'out of sync' when switching versions of MixControl. I have no issues whatsoever...no drops, 64bit buffer all day long. Make sure you are using the legacy driver on your firewire card! I tried the VIA drivers, and although they worked, I would get a hiccup now and then. Focusrite recommends the legacy driver. Since I bought a Dell box, I spent a fair amount of time cleaning up the bloatware, and optimizing it and the OS for dedicated DAW use. I spend a good amount of time with latency checker and performance monitor...and got pretty intimate with device manager and services. Then a little bit with the registry and X1 adjustments for the multi-core support. Runs like a raped ape, but I worked at it. Plug-n-play it was not. Also, don't be afraid to work with Focusrite support...when I first tried to run my DAW on a new laptop, they spent a lot of time with me working it out. I thought they went above and beyond with trying to help me. Good luck... Sorry about the run-on paragraph...Firefox browser

I fixed my main issue, I had to completely reinstall everything from my Saffire MixControl driver because somehow, even though i would reinstall to 2.2, it would still function at 2.4... so I wiped every MixControl file out except for 2.2 and did a fresh reinstall for 2.2 and voila! Dropouts are not as persistent as they used to be but this is workable. thanks for your help guys
