Sam Ash 50, 60, 70 Tributes 599.99 - Run don't walk!

I soooooooooo wanted a 60's tribute... I thought the torture was over when 2015 began, as they were discontinued.

But now, just to rub it in, they're having a clearance sale, and I get to watch the last ones vanish. At the worst possible time - there's just no way I can get this to work for me.

But if one of you guys can get a bargain on one of those guitars, I'll be glad for you. :)

I guess I'll have to wait and score one of the big shiny ones.

P.S. - Sorry in advance, Julien. ;)

For whatever reason, I assumed that the Deals forum was better used for DAW-related stuff, particularly software.

But I guess that this is indeed a deal.

FWIW, I'll not take offense if the topic is moved there.

Aren't they? Even if I already own a chocolate, I'd grab one of these.

But I'm even further away from one than when I posted the deal - yesterday, my wife and I heard the terms "gap coverage" for the first time when our insurance company called to confirm that our car was a total lost. I won't be buying gear for a while...

Ordered a 60s... I showed it to the wifey and she said, "Get it!" I was between the 50s and the 60s but I think the Burst Buckers will work best with my current amp setup. Besides I have a nice P-90 guitar.
Thanks for the Heads Up Rain!!  You know, I've wanted an SG for a while! If I really like it I may sell my LP and get a Standard.

!!!!!!! Hey... I am watching a few SNLs that I recorded over the last week on VH1 Classic. I picked shows whit musical acts I wanted to see and as I was posting this FZ was playing "The Slime"... and was playing what looked like a chocolate SG.. it is a SIGN! LOL. I guess I need to get a Carvin x-100 now too! I already have a WAH I can use half cocked. uh, but then there are the licks and riffs... nevermind.

Yeah, I know you've been wanting one for quite a while - I'm glad you'll finally get yours, and glad that I posted that deal here. :)

Reminds me of that time I was at Sam Ash in NY, on a mission to buy a cheap strat w/ a humbucker. I needed that humbucker type of sound for the stuff I was recording but I only had my classic 3 single coils Fender.

I was messing with strats when the sales guy insisted that I tried that Black Epiphone Les Paul. I had been playing strats exclusively for decades, so I didn't think much of it until he put it in my hands. It was like a revelation.

That's when I raised my eyes and saw the TV monitor - they were playing a Led Zeppelin show, and Jimmy Page was playing a black Les Paul. If there' such a things as signs, that was one... :)

I got it... let the box sit for an hour or two, opened the box, let it sit for an hour, took the bag out and let it sit for an hour. When I opened it, it was room temp.
I looks nice, stays in tune. The fret ends are sharp as are the ends of the nut. I'll have to figure out how to round them. The cut on the upper bout was not sanded smooth but I can live with that.. If I had wanted good quality in a cheap guitar I would have bought a Chinese made guitar.

Can you get nitro cellulose in a aerosol? I might consider using some really fine grit sandpaper to finish the sanding job if I can repaint it. I don't know if it is worth bothering with though. I DO need to round off the fret edges though. It seems to fret out in a few places on the really high frets but plugged in, it may not matter. I usually don't play the really high frets anyway...  I do wish the finish felt a little more smooth.

I'll know more after I pay it plugged in tomorrow... I am glad to have it. I think having the Burst Buckers make it all worth it.

Glad that you got it but I'm sorry to hear that Gibson have cut a few corners. That's the downside of ordering online as you don't get to try a few and pick the most flawless of the bunch.

I guess I was lucky with the SGJ - besides a tiny little shard on one of the pick up rings screw, the rest was all fine. Maybe Sweetwater's own 55 point evaluation had something to do with that, too.

I'm horrible with maintenance and fixes - having someone to take care of that stuff is always my first option. The SGJ was no exception, though my luthier merely confirmed that there wasn't much for him to do on that one, besides adjusting the truss rod a tiny bit a few weeks after I received it.

I'm guessing a few knowledgeable folks here on this forum will be able to answer your questions.

Also, if you feel like it, there's a SG forum which I dig quite a bit - the nice folks over there collectively know just about everything there s to know about SG's, parts, finish, models/years and all.
http://www.everythingsg.com/index.php

I hope you enjoy those Burst Buckers. Mine has 490's which are okay, but I'd like to try '57 or BurstBuckers. The good things about Quick Connect is that it's so easy to switch pick ups that even I could do it. :) - The not so good things is that the choices are limited to a couple of rather expensive Gibson models.

At any rate, I hope you'll enjoy the SG you've been wanting for such a long time now.

I just read this

Barnes & Mullins has become the exclusive distributor for Peavey in the UK and Ireland.
The announcement at NAMM 2015 ends speculation surrounding the distribution of Peavey, with Barnes & Mullins adding the brand to its roster. The company will not, however, be taking on the Trace Elliott and Budda lines.
“The decision to partner with Barnes & Mullins and IMS was given great consideration,” commented Peavey C.O.O. Courtland Gray. “After looking at numerous opportunities with other distributors, we realized that these two companies are best positioned to enhance Peavey and grow its presence in the UK and Europe.”

I played it for a while today. I have to use a light touch with it, I tend to press the strings a bit hard. If I do that with the SG it sounds out of tune, I guess that is good as long as I can remember to not press so hard. The finish isn't a problem, you can't see it but you can feel it where the grain ends in the top curve cuts. The frets didn't bother me while playing it, I didn't notice them at all. The only problem with playing is sustain on the upper frets, especially in the 3rd and 4th strings. The top two and bottom two seem OK but starting around the 10th fret the 3 and 4 strings don't sustain, it begins around the 9th or 10th fret and once at the 12th fret the two middle strings sustain for about 5 seconds before dying. I'll get someone to take a look at it to see what it happening. If it's a defect I'll send it back for a swap. I checked Sweetwater before I bought it and they didn't have any or I would have called them and got a price match and used them. There is an inspection sheet with everything inspected and signed off on my two people. I don't know if they are Gibson people or Sam Ash people but the box looked like it came from Gibson. Maybe I should call Gibson and just send it to them and let them check it out.
I think I'll need strap locks on it, the strap came off the upper strap holder thingy when I got through. Thankfully I was holding it or it would have hit the floor head first. It wants me to play Page licks..
It certainly feels better than a Les Paul. It doesn't hurt my arm or my body like a LP does. I think it is because I play sitting down most of the time.
All things considered, I like it. I'm glad I got it. It will just take a little getting used to, I've never played anything quite like it. I like the neck.
Speaking of Page, he is on the cover of the new GP magazine. It's an old picture. He's playing his LP with this tiny strap, looks like it is maybe 3/4" wide with a small shoulder pad. Slung low with the neck up. I've tried holding a guitar like that but can't get used to it. Man, I bet his shoulder hurt at the end of the night with that tiny strap.
edit>  I also noticed something about Page in the cover picture (and it isn't FAIR) I'm pretty sure he is playing a '59 (not a small neck), has his pinky barring the 11th fret and it is all the way across ALL the strings and his second knuckle is bent at the side of the neck, his thumb is holding the 6th string and at least muting the 5th. MAN.. the guy has monkey fingers! Is he that tall or does he just have freakishly long fingers? You ever notice Albert King's hands on a guitar, makes a Flying "V" look like a child's toy!! It makes me think someone could design a guitar with a much thinner neck for us regular people with four thumbs and a big toe on each hand to play...
Anyway, that little (big) finger really jumped out at me.

I'll check that forum, thanks!

The more I play this guitar, the more I like it. It is hard to put down. About the sustain. I decided to do a side by side and my LP does the exact same thing at the same frets on the same strings so I am assuming it is not a problem. It is funny how a different guitar will make you play different things. This is one GREAT feeling and sounding guitar.
I am REALLY glad I got it. I may pull the Burst Buckers and put them in a Les Paul Classic I have. I've never been thrilled with the ceramic pickups, there is nothing really wrong with them but I bet putting the BBs in the LP would really be a good move.
I have a JB that should KILL in the bridge position in this SG. I have a few different humbuckers I'm not using to try in the neck. I had a Les Paul Studio, a '91 with the ebony fret board. I put some PAF classics in it. I got it used and it had the JB which sounded great but it also had a PAF PRO in the neck that, without the maple cap, sounded dark and muddy so I don't think it is a good candidate for the neck.
I'll let you know what I do. Did I mention that I love this guitar? It is now the first one I pick up when I want to play. I love the light touch it takes, my arthritis in my fret hand index finger does not bother me nearly as much when I play the SG ad THAT is a good thing indeed! I sure am glad that you posted about this sale. I was in a guitar funk. I AM now out of it!! DOH...

So glad to read that!

Even if I liked it quite a bit when I got it, it still took me a bit of time to fully adapt to it. But after a few weeks, it was as if someone had removed all the stops in front of me - it's just so fluid and so easy to play. It's the shortest path between me and the music, the one that offers the least resistance.

The SG's the first I reach for when I want to write, figure out a part, cut a demo or just jam.

Which is funny because I never liked the model until very recently. Since the accident, it's once again the only guitar I'm able to play. It's quite fortunate that I've finally got into SG's at this time of my life. I figure that SG is the model I'm most likely to be able to play for the longest as I grow older.

It pains me to be missing that sale, but I guess it would make more sense to wait and get one of the big ones.

I've been drooling into the translucent ebony Standard...

Get a used Standard. That is my plan. I am having just a little trouble keeping it in tune. It don't seem to go out when I'm playing but overnight so it may just be the weather, still I may change to locking tuners.
The biggest thing for me to get used to is all the extra frets, the 12th fret is where I think the 8th should be, sometimes I go to the wrong place but I'm getting used to it. I didn't know it had three full octaves! All accessible too!

Yup - I've started checkin' out those used Standard. At first I thought I wanted a red one, but I'm going through a more "natural finish" phase... Hence the ebony one.

FWIW, mine seemed to get better with time in terms of tuning. The first week or so, I struggled a bit with it, but eventually, things just settled down. As if the thing needed to be played a bit, and to adapt to the climate of Nevada. It's now as good as any guitar I've worked with.

I wasn't so sure at first about those Gibson Deluxe tuners with the plastic pegs but I've come to love them.
