Samson C01u mic with Sonar LE latency issues.

Hi all,

This is my very first post although I have been hanging around for some time.

I am a beginner guitarist (acoustic) and use sonar LE to record my practise sessions via a c01u mic.

I seem to have it running ok( from the info found here), well good enough for what i use it for.

The problem is when i come to record some lead over rhythm the latency becomes an issue.

So before i run out and buy a quadcapture and rode M3 mic I have the BIG question......

Does the latency come from the fact that its a usb mic or is it the fact that my machine is not upto scratch....? will an interface solve this or will it be a waste of money. THANKS.

my machine - ATHLON X2 64 4400+ 2.3GHZ- 4GB OCZ reaper pc6400 800mhz - asus m2n4-sli - geforce 8600gts - sata2 500gb - 550w psu - vista 64 home premium.

Thanks in advance for any reply. John.

Almost forgot, I'm using a cheapo sound card ( c-media pci card) and my audio settings are,

    sampling rate - 44100
audio driver bit depth - 16
buffers in playback queue - 16
    buffer size 160msec
    effective at 44100 - 2400msec
    I/O buffer size - 128
    driver mode - mme 32bit

    Cheers. John.

The problem is the USB-mic is also a soundcard, and its clock conflicts with your other card. You can work with the USB mic, but it does make your life difficult. There's a sticky about them on the LE forum.

If you plan on buying something, get rid of the USB mic and get a cheap USB-audio interface with phantom power and a normal condenser mic.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

With the hardware that you have you should be able to handle several audio tracks while recording, but you are probably going to need to do some performance tuning.  Even after you go out and buy better sound interfaces you will need to do some work in this area.

I believe that my first recommendation for anyone using a non-professional sound card is to try using ASIO4ALL.  It dosen't create world peace or cure cancer, but it does make consumer grade WDM devices behave better in Sonar.

Monitor your recording from the headphone jack on the USB microphone.

Look for performance tips in this forum (e.g., turning off internet cameras, deactivating wireless network cards, etc).

You can do what you are after with the equipment that you have.  Even if you go out and buy a lot of other expensive stuff you will still need to chase down the performance hogs and tune your system.  You can do that now and get something that will passibly work.

    thanks for the reply guys,

Well i was messing about last night and came across a thread on the asio4all drivers, so i gave it a go and that sorted it no end, I mean it was lightening fast in comparison but i struggled setting the input and outputs and it was acting strange.
Then i remembered someone saying about how the asio4all mirror the wdm drivers or something along those lines so i swapped back to wdm (like it says in the samson manual ha ha). Again the recording was lightening but the play back was jumpy and echoed, then i noticed i was recording in stereo so once i switched to mono all was perfect.

So in the mean time I'm ebaying and come across a fa66 interface for £100, bargain? so I'm sure i'll be looking for fa66 advice once it arrives ha ha.

Can anyone recommend a cheap mic for recording acoustic guitar? rode m3 perhaps?

    thanks guys.
    john.

and just out of interest my audio settings are now,

    sampling rate - 44100
audio driver bit depth - 16
buffers in playback queue - 2
    buffer size - 20msec
    effective at 44100 - 20msec
    I/O buffer size - 128
    driver mode - wdm

The FA66 is a FireWire device. Do you have a FireWire port?

TI is recommended by many of the FireWire device manufacturers. Since you don't have one yet, a TI card would a good buy.
Never had any problems with my VIA FireWire card, though.

if your using a USB mic of ANY brand .. DO NOT use ASIO4ALL with it .. if your on-board card is rubbish, that has a big effect on the USB mic also.. even in MME mode. The soundcard you using for playback should have NATIVE asio drivers.. you switch to MME only for recording. http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=1618556 is the guide I wrote..

    Hey fog,

Thanks for the guide, i followed this when i was originally having problems, when I'm in mme 32bit the latency is too high and eventually drops out. My original problem was an echoing on the recording, i've traced this back to recording in stereo which is resolved when i record mono.

    thanks for the help
