Samson C03U with Asio4All: my personal experience

Hi to all,

I would like to share with you my experience with the Samson C03U USB microphone, and the driver ASIO4ALL. I based my experience on the beautiful guide written by Fog and I decided to buy the C03U because i needed a relatively cheap microphone but with all the features that I could afford to use it for both voice and, above all, with the acoustic guitar. I could buy the regular version, but ... I think USB is a more versatile solution, especially because I can connect it directly to the notebook without having to carry even a sound card.

So: I have in my computer, as main soundcard, an M-Audio Delta, which has its own Asio drivers, and it works perfectly. Reading various posts in other forums of hard disk recording, I've seen others use this mic with asio4all and then I decided to gave a chance too.

Once installed ASIO4ALL drivers, after a few tries, I found that this configuration works very well: in Asio4all panel I enabled the voices Delta AP1/2 and put other off, and I also activated the Samson C03U. From the audio track in Sonar LE 8.5, I chose the C03U as input and Delta AP1/2 as output, put the track on record and everything just got better! I also enabled monitoring on the track and, with a buffer adjusted to 160 (in asio4all panel) I can get a decent latency, I also set the recording to work with 24 bit in Sonar and I have to say that problems did not, the recording quality is more than satisfactory for a microphone for about $ 100.

I would like to add some considerations. The computer I used for this test is self-assembled one with a cheap Sapphire motherboard, AMD 740G, AMD Athlon II X2 250 and 4 GB of RAM, Windows 7 (without Service Pack 1) and with only the drivers included in Windows disk. .. With DPC latency checker I can have values more than acceptable (around 80us) and, as written above, I used version 8.5 of Sonar LE, a really good daw to just be an OEM product (...Cakewalk beats all, there little to do).

I hope that my experience can be helpful in some way, above all, have fun!

glad you liked the guide, I think it was a great time saver for those who had the mic.. and yep I found it funny people commented on the quality of the mic sound wise, yet didn't own it (considering it's based on the same tech pretty much as the none USB version)

I didn't use asio4all, I used to switch from MME / native asio driver.. anyway, works for you .. thats all that counts :)

    Fog Thanks for your attention!

Many may even smile about the quality of the C03U microphone, the fact remains that on the internet you can find many reviews and most of them are positive.

I find it an excellent product for the price, I like to record the acoustic guitar with the"omni" mode and my voice set on "cardioid" (... maybe because i'm neither Michael Hedges nor Robert Plant that i'm so happy with my purchase ...:-))

However, I would add that, with XP, I could not get the same results with Asio4All and even how to use the WDM drivers, something that can be done with Windows 7 (as written in my previous post) and with Vista X64 (SP2) that I use as my main machine with Sonar X1 Studio.

When I have some time available, I'd like to do further tests concerning the possible use of C03U with XP, I have always found much help on this forum from Cakewalk, when I can, I like to give my little contribution ...

No problem with MacOS X 10.6.8, i tested C03U with Garageband '11: creating an audio aggregator is possible to start to do ... What you want, or nearly so, but that's another story!
