timidi Whoa.. Nice job guys. Great drumming Danny. How the hell do you punch in drums while sitting on the throne? I have images of lots of running and cymbals falling over and tripping over cables etc..... I do think the drums are kind of lost in the mix (quiet). If'n it was me, I'd have em all up in yo face.. Thanks Tim... yeah, you're right... I planned to do another mix last night, but Dave Adkins' mom died last night and it's been chaos around here... I'm so glad you asked Danny that question, I was imagining the same thing... Thanks Danny, for explaining your process... whatever you do... it works...

Well I'm with Philip on this I hate christmas music but the whole track is well exacuted. Danny's drums are good, they are busy but they don't seem to get in the way of the arangement. I can hear what Shad is talking about but I would go so far as to say it's a low mid problem. The mix feels a little muddy. Perhaps a bump at around 400hz on the master would fix this. Nice though Peace Ben

I might cut 400hz if it sounded muddy... but to bump 400hz because it feels muddy ??? and frankly I could care less what you & Philip hate, or eshew... I do appreciate you listening though...

Oh yea! Actually not a huge fan of that type either but man it was still enjoyable. I wanted to say that Danny had overcooked the drums etc, but they all fitted so well and man is he good! The intro is very captivating and the end laid back repetitive vocals I love. Mix end, this sound top dollar on my lapper and compared to my mixes it doesnt "buzz" with that midrange that I really need to get a handle on. Always a fan men, Merry Xmas, Cian

Listened a third time. I think I know what happened. Part of the problem was I was listening to a lot of commercial music that day. I had not listened to any for weeks. It was only then that I noticed there is a trend on this forum to go a bit far with the bass... and I was getting used to it. Sincerely, I become concerned with what happened, it bothers me when I lose my objectivity. So I have reset my "meter" with listening to more commercial music and getting a handle on what I am actually hearing again. I still think you need to eek down on the bass on your mixes overall. The hard part is doing that while preserving the richness and warmth.

Thanks for the comments and listens everyone. Just a quick comment about "busy" or "overcooked". (which I'm not offended by in the least, but feel the need to at least drop a few comments about) If you listen to jazz, fusion, or even the style of drumming Carter from the Dave Mathews band delivers, that's the style I was going for in this. Drums for this style of music usually don't "just lay back" and hang in the pocket, they "play". I'm not afraid to play the instruments I play and always feel that I have had the restriction enough to know when to really let go and when to "just" enhance a tune. It will always be a matter of personal opinion of course, but to me "busy" or "overcooked" are words WE in my neck of the woods use that sort of describe someone that has overplayed something in bad taste, loses timing and depreciates a song. In an instrumental situation, there really aren't any rules. I'm not trying to justify myself nor am I defending anything or going against the comments here, but if you're not really familiar with how a style like this can be, it's easy to see where it may be taken the wrong way. :) That said, Frank didn't post this because he felt sorry for me or anything. LOL! This was actually just supposed to be me jamming for my head and his. He'd never post something he didn't feel comfortable with or fitting to his music. I know he would have slapped me down in an instant if he didn't enjoy what I did here, so I feel great about the outcome in spite of any negative comments that may end up here. (present company in this thread excluded) It seems there is a vast majority of people in this world that have a problem when someone showcases a few chops on an instrument. Right away, the person delivering the performance is busy or overplaying. To me, it's like driving a car....you drive as fast as you can handle while doing it as safe as possible. I play as good as I can deliver in all instances while keeping the song first and foremost while not being afraid to show a little of what I've worked so hard on my entire life. It's not like this was a basic 4/4 tune that needed conservative drumming IMHO. :) But hey, I know I'm not for everyone...why do you think I don't post my own stuff here? LOL! Ben: no offense, but that's not the first time you've made that "bump at 400" comment in the wrong situation. That would ADD mud, not take it away. Freq's from 200-400 are the low mid mud frequencies to where you would REMOVE them, not bump them if mud was apparent. -Danny

Danny, for me, "overcooked" was taken in a "mix" perspective (to loud). What I heard was Frank wanting to showcase your track, which is admirable and God love him for it, but it (IMO) detracted from the mix in general. I think you did a stellar job, but I suspect if you had mixed this, you would have been a bit more subtle with it. And yes, you are completely correct... 200 - 400 is mud zone. Ben, next time you take a course, make sure you are awake during class, as that is "grade one" stuff.

LOL it's all good Shad. :) Frank had mailed me a few times and said "hey, listen to this...I can't tell anymore!" He took like a day off from it I think, and then posted up the one you heard. The original was me playing over him singing...you know, the very first one he posted? That's what I tracked to...so I hadn't heard this new one until he posted it. Yeah, still a fine job in my opinion. He's a good guy that Frank...worried about taking the limelight, so he shared a little too much with me while I was just wanting to back him up. Hahaha! :) -Danny

I agree... it's all good... I went to a funeral today and after the service I drove myself and 3 other pallbearers(all long-time musicians) to the cemetery. we listened to three different mixes of this, and this one was the favorite... they all loved it... I told 'em I was tired of it, but I sure did like that drummer... thanks again Danny, and thank you too Shad... It's all good... and thank you Ben & Philip, and thank Mrs. Lilly Ida Adkins, wherever you are...

Frank, I remember this song from before. Those vocal harmonies are just absoultely great. You're such a great talent! Danny's drumming just added so much too. What can't Danny do? Sheesh! I'm assuming the Sax in the background is your Sax player that usually plays on your songs. He's awesome. He has such a great sound. Whoever mixes his sax perfomances, I'm assuming it's you, does such a great job on his sound. Makes me smile! Geat job all around! Merry Christmas

Thanks Rich... yeah, Danny nailed this... he's the consummate pro... no nonsense, so talented and generous... I lifted the tenor sax lines from a different project I did with Greg Lucas... Greg used to play with my band, "The BopCats" we still play/record together whenever he's in town... I love your last post... You have such a soulful voice...
