Yup, pretty good ain't they? Nice to think those 4 callow lads I first saw on 'Rock Goes to College' 30-odd years ago are still together.

I'm watching too and enjoying it, but it seems Bono is avoiding the high notes, or is that just me ?

Also, being a non-guitarist I can't really tell why The Edge needs a different guitar for every song as it seems to me that most of what he plays sounds much the same........or maybe that's just me too. I'm sure you guitarists will have something to say about that......

I still have 'Boy', 'October', 'Live Under A Blood Red Sky', 'War' and 'The Joshua Tree' floating around on vinyl in the attic James

I think all five CD's will make it into the car from tomorrow

What did they end up using for their physical stage setup? Read an article the other day they were still trying to decide on exactly how to do things as these festivals usually don't have huge artist's stage sets. Did they use the whole 'Claw' or something simpler sort of like when they did the rooftop BBC gig at night?

I am a guitarist (as well as other instruments) and I never understood someone on stage changing guitars almost every tune, especially when, as you say, every guitar pretty much sounds the same. I understand the need for backup guitars in case there's a problem (string breakage, tuning, electrical, 6 versus 12 string, acoustic versus electric, slide versus pick) but changing guitars, when they all sound the same (like the Edge's and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top) - I think it's more a show-off deal than anything. Look how many guitars I have.

It just wastes time and ruins the rhythm of a set/show.

Bellamy of the Muse also changes guitars every tune.

It only makes sense if some are detuned down a half step or so.  Or maybe some are set up with a drop tuning.  Otherwise, it's just "showbiz."

Mmm, didn't think about tuning - might be something to do with it, though I still suspect it was more of a case of look at all my guitars. That or that he has to prove to the tax man that, yes he really does need all those guitars that he claimed against taxes lol !

I like the one where Bono stops the concert and, once everything is quiet, starts clapping about once per second.  Then he says "Every time I clap my hands, a child in Africa dies."  This is followed by an Irish man yelling "Then fooking stop doing it!!!!"

(I wish bands wouldn't use gigs to try and make political statements...)

    PWF!    That's a classic comeback.

With some bands--like U2--the politics is part of the music and would be difficult to separate from the show.  You just have to accept that fact in some situations.  I'd expect it from Dylan or Springsteen, too.  They could, of course, be a little more subtle about it and not interrupt a song.

I'm sorry about the situation in Africa, though.

    Absolutely.

Before they got into saving the planet, one of U2's finest moments was Sunday Bloody Sunday - a passionate song concerning itself with the appalling horror of Bloody Sunday, when, on January 30th 1972, in the Bogside area of Londonderry, British troops opened fire on unarmed protesters and bystanders resulting in the death of fourteen people.

With this song in particular, U2 carried on the mantle of Stiff Little Fingers who also sang passionately, and often very angrily, about the Northern Ireland troubles from the perspective of people living through them.

Some of SLF's most poignant and often heart-wrenching tunes include:
    - Suspect Device
    - Johnny Was
    - Alternative Ulster
    - Fly The Flag
    - At The Edge
    - Tin Soldiers

I like Sunday Bloody Sunday, and When Love Came To Town and a bunch of others as well.  But my favorite is still I Will Follow.  Like U2, but I'm far from a die-hard fan.  I used to work with a guy who would travel hundreds--if not thousands--of miles to a U2 show.  He and his wife lived here in California.  I think he' seen shows in L.A., NYC and possibly Dublin or Wembly Stadium.  I'm not sure how he was able to get away from work so much--let alone afford all of the travel.  I'm not judging; just curious.

I kind of remember the name Stiff Little Fingers.  I don't recall hearing any songs from them, though.  I think I may have been confusing them with the Stiff Records label.  I liked a bunch of the artists on Stiff.  I guess they were a little more New Wave than punk, though.  Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello and Ian Dury, etc.

Thanks.  I'll check out the SLF tunes in a little while.  I have a few things to do first.

Those SLF were pretty good.  All were effective punk songs.    I liked the video for Suspect Device.  Other favorites were Alternative Ulster and Fly The Flag.

A couple of them had a few drop-outs--I'm looking into getting a new service provider.

    Thanks, Strummy.

He actually gets some hugely different tones...The SG sound on 'Elevation' couldn't really be reproduced on a Strat, the intro to 'Where the Streets have No name' couldn't be anything but a Strat, and 'I Will Follow' on the Explorer is something else entirely. I think it's just a professional desire to be true to the sound of the records, and of course, because he has all the guitars.
