Saturday Night Frogs
https://soundcloud.com/rebel007/saturday-night-frogsLate one Saturday night I recorded 3 minutes of the frogs in our recently flooded dam. There is no editing done to the frog track, this is exactly how they sounded, with a bit of Verb added. The synthesiser and drums of course were added later. Staring in the song are the beautifully deep throated Pobble Bonk, The aptly named Maniacal Cackle Frog (Yes that's it's real name), and a nameless individual at the 2.10min mark that came and sat not 1 meter from me for a guest solo spot. This ended up being a bit of a test for my new drum pack in AD2, Rematrix on the Rapture and Master tracks (I got my wish for a replacement for Perfect Space and it works in Pro Channel), and Plus 10db on the master, which I am really liking. It's a bit tongue in cheek but I liked it enough to share.

Riveting stuff Wayne  sorry someone did not have to so I did. Actually I quite enjoyed it, (twice), nice use of a natural resource and the mix worked here worthy of a  I think.

I think the Pobble Bonk has a singer in his throat Fun stuff, and I envisioned Mike Oldfield announcing"Maniacal Cackle Frog". Nice swampy drum track. This would go well with my own Cypress Drift.Thanks for sharing this.

Thanks Wookiee, glad you got a I did too. It certainly was fun kakku, I enjoyed it, the hardest part was in fact sitting by the dam in the pitch black at midnight on a Saturday night. Thanks Robert, the drum track was from the Percussion session of AD, it did kind of suit.

Love it. I'd take the snare/sidestick louder, and lower that boomin' kick/tom. What did you use to capture the frogs? Sound pretty clean.

Hey, thanks Tom. I must admit I didn't spend a lot of time on the drums. Just found a preset, tweaked it a little and left it at that. I probably will re-visit them at some stage as I like the idea of bringing in some natural sounds to create a song, I'm just not sure what to do with it.
The frogs were captured on a portable Edirol R-1 stereo recorder. One of the very early models I think, it's huge compared to the models that are on the market now, I've had it for 15 years or so. The track was set for stereo, wav, 24bit.

I might have a slight prejudice having been educated in zoology and working in the environmental/ecology field for almost 40 years. Frogs are an indicator species (like the canary in the coal mine) as they are very susceptible to harmful changes in a particular community or ecosystem. In Florida we have the Florida Frog Network. Trained volunteers go out on given nights to identify and count the various frog calls in identified area. In this manner, they can get a rough idea as to how the populations of frogs are doing and if there is a dramatic decline then the scientific and regulatory community can be called to check things out.
Quite literally this was music to my ears.
