Saw some terrible news about polluted water in Colorado on TV this morning

"The river contains high concentrations of Mercury, Lead and Arsenicum", the news item stated.
The news item also stated that there is "no evidence that this is harmfull to animals or humans".

Although it sounds contradictory, that could be a true statement.

We're constantly redefining what "high" means. Same with radiation. All these nasty things exist in nature and always have. None are human creations, and they will still be there after all of us evil humans are gone.

Where we fail as a species is allowing them to accumulate in concentrations high enough to become harmful. But just finding out you have arsenic in your water isn't in and of itself cause for concern.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Absolutely not harmful whatsoever. In fact eating a pencil and a thermometer every day should be part of a carefully controlled diet. Fish love it...

Hi,

Sure looks ugly!

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

That just means, not enough of animals and/or humans have died to complete the statistical requirements.

Mind you, I'm not a tree-hugger, for trees may contain lead, mercury and arsenic too....

I read where drinking water and breathing air are harmful, so I recommend avoiding both.

Since leadership has proven that there aren't any consequences for any catastrophic 'events', the "violators" will most likely get transferred/promoted to a higher ranking position.

When I worked at Motorola, we had an acronym for that...FUMU. Efff up. Move up.

Since firing anybody was so difficult, if I had an engineer that wasn't pulling his weight, I FUMU'd him, that is, I gave him a great recommendation in a department that would have no contact with mine. Adios, MF!

Concerning all this above.

I remember this song from when I was a little kid.
It's from 1971.
You may remember it too.
You may take a short break to listen to it:

Remember we are mostly water. Starbucks sells us 95% hot water. It is the 5% of that mysterious formula mother nature conjured up called coffee we pay $10.00~or whatever for.
Now THC is another formula extracted through fire, the sun god, traversed through the water based system of our bodies~they call it fluids.........
We are likely super dried fishes, living off the water in what we call atmosphere, yet, we constantly demand heavy doses~Rain........

Like it or not, the Guanabara Bay in Rio is far more toxic than that river ... and no one around here cares!

I doubt it's because "no one around here cares", but rather because the topic of the OP is about the Colorado river and directly relating to the people around it......thus staying on topic.

I know ... but toxic anything, for this person who lived in Brazil, sometimes is more scary in the way that it is represented, than anything else. Relatively speaking, it is bad, but there is a lot worse out there, but no one is showing the pictures in Rio, which will make anyone wonder why the hell is anyone even considering doing some stuff in that Bay ... is beyond me! That part, is the scariest of all! Not to mention the river has a chance to clean itself up some ... but the Bay? It's the direct dump for almost half of all the refuse in Rio! AND most of it is not even treated!

The Animas and San Juan are amazing rivers. As a WW Kayaker I have had the opportunity to experience them up close and personal. These catastrophes have happened before and will happen again. This has been going on since the 1800's.  http://www.durangoherald.com/article/20130803/NEWS01/130809830/0/SEARCH/A-legacy-that-won%27t-die

Dig hundreds of mines in an area that gets 10 of snow a year, they will fill with water during the Spring thaw. Active mines continuously pump water out and treat it. Abandoned mines just keep filling and overflow.

...
They've got Brazilian slums down there (and that's a lot!).

50 years ago, half of those were cardboard, and every rain season, half of them got washed down to the Bay!

But Maracana, still sold a few tickets. There's a side of Brazil that is really ugly!

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

just arriving here in utah....

the governor declares a state of emergency........
"It was a preventable mistake, and they must be held accountable," Herbert said. "Our top priority will continue to be the safety of Utahns and wildlife affected. With potential long-term implications, the emergency proclamation will allow us to continue to support affected businesses and communities."

Attorney General Sean Reyes met in Durango, Colo., with the attorneys general for Colorado and New Mexico to talk about the three states' legal options. And Utah's congressional delegation and state lawmakers called for an investigation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency — and linked the spill to the state's public-lands fight.

"One of the reasons I am in Durango today is ... to ensure the EPA lives up to its promise to be fully accountable and transparent — and to make our citizens and environment whole," he said in a statement. "It is premature to say what legal action will be taken until we better understand the damage that has been and is occurring and also learn what the EPA is willing to compensate. In that process, we will ensure the EPA, and any other potentially liable entities, are held legally responsible not just for short term effects but for damage that may not be known or understood for years to come."

The EPA weren't responsible for leaving the crap behind after exploiting the mine.

My Mother always made me clear up my stuff up before doing something else and just sweeping my crap under the carpet never counted as clearing up my stuff.

It would have been cool however if one of my brothers got the blame for my garbage further down the line when he merely discovered it and made himself accountable for it.

I'd have loved that...

Have the site's previous operators indicated that they may have been responsible in some way at all or do we just like giving Government agencies a kicking?

In the meantime we should all go shopping to console ourselves" - Banksy
