Scale Tempo

I often want to try different tempos in projects that have ritardandos (slow-downs). If I change the overall tempo, then I have to go in and and erase the ritard and insert a new series of tempos. (You can't have a song running at 120 BPM that starts slowing down at 130 BPM. By the same token, if you were smoothly slowing down from 120 to 80 and then change the base tempo to 140, there would be a sudden jump from 140 to 119.) What I need is a scale tempos command that changes all tempos by the same percent or, better yet, by the same number; for example, reduce all tempos by 5 BPM. Does this exist? Thanks.

It was possible in ProAudio days. I had a CAL script that did it, just as you describe. But the particular CAL command that scaled tempo was not supported by newer versions of SONAR. Maybe if CAL is not the preferred mode for this type of thing anymore, I would like to see a way to select a portion of the tempo map and drag it up or down in one piece.

I would like to see more tools developed for manipulating tempo without screwing up your project.

In my opinion, tasks such as like this are core roles of DAW sequencers while interior decoration of GUIs with redundant channel strips seems like a waste of time. It's frustrating to consider how many core DAW functions have been left in a primitive state for the past 20+ years.

I look forward to working with averaging tools and tools that make it easier to extract accelerations and decelerations from scratch tracks and then provide some sort of smoothing function.

    Come on son!

    best regards,

Yes,  the tempo functions Mike is discribing would make scoring to picture in Sonar 10 times better.

I believe I use to globally change tempos in Cake 3.0 by +/-ing  the tempo in the transport.  I just tried it in X1 and does not happen.

Would it be possible to make the tempo map edit with smart tools and nodes just like the track automation works? Then you could highlight a whole section and raise/lower tempos and all sorts of things.

It can be done. Here's the drill I've posted a number of times.  You can ignore the first step if the project is all-MIDI:

    1. Enable Auto-stretch (a.k.a. Clip Follows Project in Auto-stretch mode) on all audio clips.
    2. Select a MIDI or audio clip that runs the length of the project.
    3. Go to Process > Fit to Time.
    4. Convert the current Thru time to total frames (usually 30 frames/sec).
    5. Divide that by the desired tempo change factor (e.g. 1.10 to get a 10% increase, 0.90 for a 10% decease).
    6. Round and convert that new value to minutes:seconds:frames.
    7. Enter that as the new Thru, and select Modify by Changing: Tempo Map.
    8. Click OK.

brundelefly, Thanks. I was thinking about how to use fit to time and somehow mathematically translate that to BPMs. (Both are needed: time for fitting to video and BPM for general music use, dance mixes, etc.) Mike McCue nailed the issue: why would a DAW with so many exotic and complex functions miss something this basic? We should not have to resort to complicated work-arounds for such a common task. I like Cakewalk and don't generally bash them, but they should be ashamed about this one. For a straight-tempo song with a ritard, I can adjust the tempo and then redo the ritard, but an orchestral work with a lot of tempo movement is a nightmare.
