Scandalous Grace- Broken Heart
Hey All, We have a new song up for your review. This group of guys had a lot of fun with this song and everyone involved contributed greatly to this songs outcome. Here is the break down of who played what......let us know your thoughts on the song and the production. Scandalous Grace: Broken Heart (c) 2014 Scandalous Grace Michael Hanson: Bass, Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Lead Vocal. Sean Peifer: Electric Guitar, Lead Guitar (Solo’s), Vocals. Nice one. Animal.....JS? Mix sounds good. Nice full sound I was impressed with the guitar solo that kicked it off. Nice tone and innovative playing. Was that Sean? It's amazing the results you get with collabs. Who did the mixing and production on this one?

Starise, Herb, Leadfoot, H.... Thank you for listening and commenting. Animal, ha...I had the muppets character in mind when I was trying to figure out who to credit with the drums. I programmed them using EZD2. Herb, to answer your questions, yes... Sean played the intro and solo, fuzzed/ wah leads. He asked if he could have a go at it. I described to him what I heard in my head. He nailed it. The first reaction that I had when I first heard the intro was...Holy Crap....that's absolutely perfect. He did two versions of the middle solo and I chose the second version. As you can probably tell by now, I was the mixer and producer. I am becoming a huge fan of this virtual band stuff, we are starting to gel and compliment one another's skills. This song in particular, every ones parts were working well together. Even with both Sean and myself each taking an electric rhythm part, we played very well in sinc with each other.

Sounds well here, glad you explained the Animal part as I had no recollection of playing on this, I say that as prior to being known as the Wookiee when I played drums I was called Animal. Nice stuff all round thanks for sharing.

very nice work all the way round! Can't agree more w/the collab fun....I think the best of tunes takes different musical angles glued together. really enjoyed the kit work here...during the lead it was great at building and support the very cool lead. I would have like to hear the bvox slide to one side of the mix as it seemed to sit on top of the mains.... great job guys!!

A very nice song. Reece, I didn't know you were doing these collabs. You guys really sound good together. That vocal thing has taken off for you! All of the players did a fine job. I too like the leads. I like the song too. All around nice work.

Michael, this is one of the better tracks I've heard from you. The song just pops from my speakers, and sounds as if your band was in my room. If you keep putting quality like this out there, you will find your audience. Well done, guys!

Pogue, I had another trusted friend suggest panning the BGVs slightly more, I will give that a try.
Evadianepug, this is our second song to collaborate on and we have several more in the works. Yes, I really like the mixture of vocal tones that we get as a group and it has been interesting to see of the different opportunities this has opened up for us musically to utilize each other's talents.
Lynn, thank you for listening brother. I love the way this song starts out as well by popping right into that blast of full band and into lead. Sent chills down my spine the first time I loaded up everyone's tracks.

I am not at home to verify Clint, but I think it is just the DW Kit set on the "original" preset. The only other one that I would have used is Rock!, but I don't think I used it on this one. I, of course, went through the different kit piece options and selected snares, kicks, and cymbals that compliment the song the best. I didn't switch out Tom, rom the basic kit.

Thanks for listening and commenting everyone! Here's the breakdown of how we've been working together so far; the first song we did was purely collaborative effort from the ground up. we started with a plan on the type of song it should be, threw some chords and melodies together and fine tuned it, then we started creating parts and placing them in a project template created by the producer/mixing engineer (I wore that hat on the first song). that first song also included Herb in our collab, but the next ones he has decided to step out of, at least temporarily. on this song and the next 2 songs, we are all helping out with songs which are actually written by each of us individually. this particular song was written by Mike and he produced and mixed it. the next song we'll have out will be one which was written by Sean and Mike is also mixing and producing that one. we've learned a lot from each other and we're starting to settle into a really solid relationship. that's not to say we don't have disagreements any more, but we're starting to get to know each other better anyway. Warren - Mike is singing lead vocals on this, I'm only singing harmonies. Sean sang the higher harmonies and I sang the lower ones. thanks again for listening! I'm glad you guys are enjoying Scandalous Grace!

Sounds real good here, great rock feel. Love the solos - tasty and with a nice tone. The only thing I would probably do (mentioned previously) is pan the harmonies a little for a bit more width. Otherwise it's a nice full mix.

if we didn't address you personally by name, I apologize, but we DO very much appreciate all of the comments!!! we've been discussing this song extensively and it's mix because of some mixed reviews we got from another forum. I'm not sure if they're legitimate reviews or people don't know what they're talking about or if they're right and we need to reconsider things. regardless I'm glad we're getting such good reviews here. you guys must know what you're talking about!!!

I have uploaded a new version of this song to Sound Cloud, based on the wonderful advise that I have received here, and from a couple of very trusted sets of ears. I started by widening out the BGV's some. That has really opened up the vocals for this song and was an excellent suggestion. I have also spread you the drum tracks a little more by panning a few of the kit pieces. It was noted by a trusted member here who PM'd me, that the kit was a little centered in the mix. Lastly, 2 people from another forum site wanted to hear the kick better. So, I have given it just a slight boost. Thanks again for listening and advising, that makes this place sooooooo valuable.

It's all excellent, but I especially like the lead guitar sound in the intro and the full, well-mixed harmonies. To point #1, I have trouble getting a distorted guitar to sound clean. That sounds like it doesn't make sense but most producers or engineers will know what I mean: fat, sweet distortion, without crackle and hiss. Your lead sound is a great example of what I like but can't always get.

konradh - thanks for the listen and the comments.
In terms of getting a good tone, I've experienced trial and error as well. A few pointers that I hope will be helpful to you: 1) Make sure that your levels are good. If the input level is too small, it seems that it will sound more noisy and hissy. If your input or output levels are too high you will get unpleasant distorting. 2) Use your noise gate. I've had good results with the noise gate in TH2 (which is what I used on this recording). I also use Amplitube sometimes. It also has a noise gate, but I haven't had as good results with it. 3) Consider your pickups. I like the results I get from humbuckers when using an overdriven sound. Single coils are better for a clean sound IMO (though this may be a matter of taste). Single coils, though, do seem to do quite well with an "edgy," lower to medium gain sound. TH2 also has a setting for the type of pickups you are using.
If you want more details about the settings, effects and amp models I used in TH2 for this, I'd be happy to share. Just PM me.
thegaltierbrothers - thanks for the good words! I appreciate your taking time to listen.
- Sean
