Scarlet 6i6 Johhny's top pick!

I have had a smaller interface on my wish list for a while. My Tascam has worked perfectly fine but I'm well aware of the latency which rules out using it live. It's also a bit bulky for laptop stuff.

Probably been reading every article, review and thread about interfaces for over 4 years now. So my choice was based on my criteria of:
#1- Connectivity
#2- Drivers are trusted by all
#3- Pre amps are also trustworthy
#4- Must be AC powered
#5- Must not be cheap plastic box
#6- Priced under $450 ( I paid $235can)

The MixControl software is at first hard to figure out as they have used a naming system that's a bit confusing. But once you get your head around it it is very powerful. It is possible to run four different cue mixes as example. You can also assign any track from your DAW and then use the mix control mixer to balance the sound without trashing your projects mix.
Some free software too, Bass station looks cool.

Software/ drivers had some sort of conflict on the first computer I was testing it on. Turned out they posted the old drivers on the support site, I still can'r figure that one out and how I managed to get the correct driver is lost to me in the confusion of trouble shooting. But once I got my hands on the correct drivers all is working perfectly.

So this unit is priced the same as a Quad Capture, my other consideration. But there is a lot more here for the same money. 6 in and out instead of just 4. And two headphone controls and a separate monitor volume control.

My only gripe at this point is I wrote customer support to point out the driver issue on the web site and I'm still waiting Feb 8 today is the 12, So I re emailed again today.

They responded within a day the first time,

Update: They did get back to me and I guess there's just no body there over weekends.

I've had great luck and satisfaction with Focusrite.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

I wrote a review -

Customer support finally got back to me. Not sure I like the answer, All I read is "driver issues""" arrrgg!   the reason I bought this was to get away from Tascam's "driver Issues"

We did have version 1.7 of Scarlett Mix Control available
on our website, which had an updated firmware,
but when have removed this temporarily while we
investigate some issues.
If you firmware is newer than version 1.6.1
you can download the last beta release of version 1.7,
version 1.7b1, from here:

It's a very good little unit. I'm very pleased with mine and it does allow pretty low latency. That said, it does not play well with Notion, which will crash almost immediately when you route audio to the 6i6, and since Notion works fine with ASIO4ALL to the same device, I'm suspicious that the Scarlett drivers are implicated. Otherwise it is pretty rock solid with Reaper. I can't speak for Sonar having divorced a few years ago.

Johnny, would you be willing to do a loopback test on it?
We could use one at the gearevu.com test

Thanks for the review and the info.

I am considering an upgrade to the Quad Capture because of compatability, reputation and budget.  The two headphone outputs on the 6i6 might tip the scale though, as I'm planning to record other singers and need a way to monitor.

(Turning the volume knob on my Fast Track Pro causes 'pops' on one of the outputs and it's getting worse.)

Little Fish- Yes I will certainly do that this Wednesday my next day off. I'm curious myself, I'll PM you so you'll know the results. I have both Centrance and now this new test I want to try out by these guys:

olemon Like I said, for the same money your getting a lot more features and I could safely say probably more or less the same build quality. My first interface was the Fast Track Pro, It would cut out on me all the time and there was a lot of noise in the pre amps. My son is still using it for playing movies, music and games. It worked better with the W7 64 bit drivers and a wall wart for power.

Update on the Beta drivers:
The new drivers have not caused me any issues and I've been pushing this unit a lot harder than I ever could push the Tascam. I can now safely have 8 soft synths running and way more efxs open. The Tascam? Sonar? would start to act up at that point on the same computer.
One other difference is I am now working in X3 Studio and not in 8.5 anymore. Not sure if that would make a difference to performance. I basically changed to X3 and the Scarlett on the same weekend.
