Scarlett 18i6 ~ Mix Control Question.

First let me thank you for coming all the way down here to offer help.

Now, how to explain this.
I'm not sure if I'm missing something or setting the Mix Control (MC) wrong.

I'm running Sonar X2 patched and also have the latest drivers and firmware for the 18i6.
I started my first real recording last night in pretty much about 18 months (meaning a full band not just me playing with X2).
Luckily they're friends and play for fun not a living, so it's ok that I play with new software.

Now in my test's I've done with X2 over the last few weeks, everything worked smoothly. (Well except for the known issues).

Started tonight with the 2 guitar players to basically get down the general idea and some scratch tracks.
I plugged the guitars into the front panel inserts 1&2, got my levels and opened MC to start getting my head around that.

At first I could see the meters (1&2 - far left of the MC) jumping and getting signal.
Since it's 2 different guitars I split the MC into the two separate faders option.
Closed the MC then opened again to check something real quick. This time the meters on input 1 and 2 were not doing anything. Just the main was working. But everything was still showing fine in X2 so I continued anyway. After all this is just scratch tracks.

Was getting my signal at the level I wanted on the appropriate tracks in X2.
Then I recorded a quick vocal track using one of my other pre-amps. Same thing no meters moving in MC except the main but all seemed well in X2.

Session over, I shut down Sonar and escorted them out.

Went back in and fired up X2 again just to play around with getting a balance with these 3 tracks.
That's when I noticed most (80% or more) of the sound was coming through the left monitor.
I started finagling with the pan knobs and nothing happened at all.

I turned input echo on during my little try everything to figure this out session and presto the right monitor came to life.
But still no panning.

For the last 3 hours I've been reading everything I could find on the Mix Control and came up with nothing.

So I came here with the hopes that I missed a setting somewhere or maybe it has something to do with the MC and Driver update I installed today and someone here had the same issue.

This post is already too long so If there's info you need just ask.
As for now I need sleep.

Thanks in advance for any and all reply's.

Did you update the drivers/MixControl software? That is imperative. However there are some complaints about the very latest version. I have the one preceding that and it works fine. Here is what the MixControl software is telling me on the splashscreen:

Scarlett MixControl = Version 1.1.128.0

Driver = Version 2.3.0 API 3.0

Firmware = Version 198

That said have you maybe on one of the other Mix tabs on the top left of the screen thus hiding the active mix? Have you checked your routing settings and compared them to the examples in the manual? The routing settings controls are below the mixer beside the button that says Routing Preset. Right click on those buttons for the various options. You can also choose input options by clicking above the Pan fader in the channel strip.

I don't think it matters whether your inputs are linked (the little chain link button) or not. It's more of a visual feature.

IDK... I got mine set up pretty quickly without any trouble so I haven't had to mess with it too much.

Cheers.

Kinda sounds like ya can convert each "track" in Sonar to Mono and then it should be able to pan.

Not familiar with that interface but kinda sounds like its catching just the one side.

My MAudio FTU gives the option for left, right or stereo which is actually channel 1, 2, or 1 &2 mixed together.  I wonder if its kinda the same thing with yours?

Try the Convert to Mono on each track and see what ya get

Beep,
I had mine up and running quickly and smoothly with X1.
I'm not sure if this is a Sonar issue, an 18i6 issue or a Mix Control issue.

Here's what version I'm on now.

Scarlett Mix Control: 1.2.128.0

Driver: 2.4.0 API 3.0

Firmware Version: 305

I still have the installers for the previous version in case I need to roll back.

Mike
Yeah the set-up with 1L, 1R and 1 Stereo (1 - 2 - or 1&2) is the same.
I record everything in mono, well except the obvious room mic's, overheads and the like.
I'll check and see if I convert to mono maybe it'll give a little (virtual) kick in the butt.

Hell, the way software works I wouldn't be surprised if I fire up X2 and all is well.

Going to poke around some more and see what I can stumble on to.

Re:Scarlett 18i6 ~ Mix Control Question. 2013/01/27 15:23:28 (permalink)
Ok, I exported all audio, opened a new project and imported and even checked off import as mono file.
I have one stereo file which is drum loop I use instead of the metronome.
All the other files are 1 vocal mono and 6 guitar mono's.
I have the mix control set to the DAW1 and DAW2 setting.
I now have the ability to pan but only using the buss's.
When I pan a track all I get is the -3 taper from the panning law I use. other than that I get no panning.

Everything works fine if I open the project in X1 so once again I'm stumped as to where the problem lies.

I hope someone sees this and knows where the issue is but I guess for now I'll stick with X1.

Hi Mike,

If you have MixControl set to DAW 1/2, the outputs of the 18i6 are getting their signal directly from outputs 1 and 2 of Sonar.  In other words, the Mixer in MixControl is being bypassed.  This plus the fact that the session seems to play normally in X1 tells me that the problem lies within X2.

Thank's Matt.
I imported one of the files into X1 and noticed there was no pan there either.

Is it possible that I did something to the track while setting it up, like having the pan set in the MC while recording?

From what I understand the MC effects only the output from the PC. Basically it's just a headphone mixing board

None of the settings on the MixControl mixer are able to effect the signal coming into Sonar.

When you try to pan a track, do you see the result of the panning show on the meters for the Master Bus or does it show equal level on both sides regardless of pan settings?

It shows panning but still plays center on headphones. And as far as it sounds through the monitors too.

If you look at the meters in the MixControl mixer, do the DAW 1/2 channels reflect the panning that you've done in Sonar, or do they look equal in level for left and right?  Even if you are bypassing the mixer with your routing settings, the meters will still function.

Re:Scarlett 18i6 ~ Mix Control Question. 2013/01/30 00:10:57 (permalink)
chefmike, I have two of the Focusrite Scarlett 18i6s and they both work just fine with X2. I noticed the messages from Matt Pliskin and wonder if you've tried looking at the output settings on the track or bus with Sonar X2 to ensure you're outputting to stereo. I might have missed in all the string above that you're doing that, but it seems like it would be a setting within X2 given your X1 settings are working fine.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

Just got into town.
I was thinking the whole drive "I know this is some silly user issue."

Give me some time to settle in and we'll see where I'm screwing up lol.

Re:Scarlett 18i6 ~ Mix Control Question. 2013/01/31 19:49:36 (permalink)
OK, where to start?
If I have the Mix Control Routing Section set to DAW1 Mon Out 1 and DAW2 Mon Out 2,
and the Headphone Section set to the same all pan's fine..........except headphones.

So I changed the Headphone Section to Mix 1 L and Mix 1 R.

That now works the same as above.

And yes all meters in Sonar and Mix Control show proper panning  as you would expect.

The last 2 meters on the Mix Control / The left one I have split into a stereo pair and set to DAW! & DAW2.
The meter to the right (the last one) is set to HPL and HPR, also split even tho it still appears as one.

If I change any of the settings I loose the panning in my monitors but all the meters still show as being panned in both apps.

And thanks Lawajava, yes I believe I am outputting to stereo. The meters are showing left and right and my monitors pan, just not my phones.

What simple setting am I missing to get panning in my headphones?

Thanks for your time Matt and anyone else who can help with this.

Uhhh...........My headphone amp has a mono/stereo button. I must have hit it while connecting my phones.
