"Science Fiction"...a rock tune about "neverlasting love"

My latest "retro-progressive rock" original. First mix. No biab, no loops. I played all parts on my keys. The guitars are Musiclab Realstrat and Superiff. I warbled all vox tracks with no pitch corrector(uh-oh!) All comments and crits welcome. The song is titled "Science Fiction".

    hey Ron,
really nice work on the keys/MIDI sounds!  not fond of the distortion synth that is running throughout most of it.  Im guessing that's supposed to be distortion on one of the guitars or something.

Thanks for the good words, Beagle. No synth in the mix, I think you're talking about the fret noise on the Realstrat. I kinda like it because I never had it on any other tracks. I wanted a big, thick, overdriven, fretty rythm guitar sound(ala Locomotive Breath by Jethro Tull).  It's easy to back it down though so I'll make a note...........appreciate your input........Ron

Good one Ron.  The sound reminds me of a couple of punkish/new wavish bands that came out of the Gainesville area during the late '70's.  That's a compliment because I liked them.

bayoubill, I always liked songs that have only one or two band "punches" per measure leaving a lot of air for the vox and storyline. I'm just starting to use the Musiclab Realstrat and found combined with Voxengo I had a cool "guitar" chop which inspired the arrangement. Thanks for the review and advice................Ron

Freddy J, thanks for the thumbs up. I was trying for a minimalist "power rock" live combo feel, but I'll take the late 70's punk/new wave comparison. I appreciate you taking time to listen and post......."gracias"................Ron

    Hey, Ron,

Really nice job on this cool retro progressive fusion rocker!

Nicely performed, the keys sound great, and the vocals and harmonies are excellent.

Really good stuff, buddy, have a good one!

Thank you Janet, for listening and taking the time to respond. It would be nice to have "real" guitars on this, but the "Realstrat" sure helps a keys guy like me explore possibilities I didn't have before. I toyed with a spacey sweeping phase effect on the vox chorus but decided to keep it straight and so far am glad I did.....your ears mean a lot .........thanks, Ron

Hello Bob, sometimes I think I tend to "overproduce" my arrangements so I forced myself to let this tune carry itself. I have a lot to learn about working with guitar samples so I tried to keep the "guitar" parts simple so they would be on the edge of being credible. The vox tracks only have light compression and a slight mid-boost on the eq, then to a small verb in the master buss. I really respect your work, so your comments mean a lot. Thanks a bunch, buddy.........................Ron

I can't give any suggestions on the mix because nothing is striking me as "wrong" and I'm not an in depth mix critique guy.  I can tell you that I really enjoyed listening to it and it was all good to my ears.  Love the harmonies and the vocals.  Fit just right.  Nice instrumentally too.

Really catchy hook and an interesting feel.  It does have a different sound, and that's a good thing in my book.  It's pretty remarkable that you did all that on keys.

Mix wise (and this could be a personal taste thing) I'd have liked to have heard more drive from the bass and guitars.  The vocals were really good, but it felt to me like they should have been settled a little further back to let that hard driving beat get through.

Hey there Warren, it makes my day to hear you enjoyed this song. The voices were a task, several sessions trying to get decent pitch and tone on all the parts. I usually write, then play the vox parts with a keyboard tone on a separate track so I can follow as I try to track them. Thanks for taking time to listen.............Ron

superb! as everyone has said, for MIDI'd guitars they sound pretty darn good! very well played dude. loving the harmony vocals. the main vox could maybe come down a notch, they are perhaps a little out front. the chorus is cool, like something from War of the Worlds! Drums occasionally have a bit of a metronomic thing to them, are you adjusting velocity (esp on the snare drum?) Excellent though!

Cool tune. I think the vox are a little loud and clear. Think they need to come down a bit with some ambience.

Ron - very nice.  Scary how good the guitars sound - including the wammy bar effect!  I like the hammond you added halfway through - fits right in.  The vocal harmonies halfway through reminded me of Zappa a little.  Nice vocals.

I have a pair of M-audio av40's for monitors on the road and I really like them. As I posted earlier, the "guitars" are Realsrat and Superiff samples played on my keys....just learning how they work...your input is very welcome...............Ron
