Scoring video + MIDI sequencing + audio mixing in Sonar X3 Producer ??

Scoring editing..
So far I always used Sony Vegas to edit and render
all my video projects with success.
I've been doing the same for the audio projects
using Sonar X3 Producer as a dedicated MIDI sequencer
and audio tracks mix for all my audio editing.
Now the problem I face is that I just rendered a video
clip with no sound and I want to add audio to it
--> including MIDI sequences using VST instruments.
It looks like neather Vegas nor Sonar could do that job..
I know Sonar can import a video clip on one of its track
but there is no 'preview window' for that video to be used
when scoring so it's useless..
Any settings I'm missing that would solve my problem ?
Or another simple app to be used.. ?

Thanks Dan,
I'm not close to my DAW computer now but 2 questions:

-Does Sonar X3 pro accepts 4:3 and 16:9 videos ? if so what formats are accepted ?
The only video format I've been able to import so far is a 4:3 .MPG video
other types (AVI, MOV, M2V, etc..) gave me an popup error window..

-Is this possible to view the actual video playing in a separate 'preview window' within Sonar X3
while listening its edited MIDI vst/audio tracks ? The track horizontal video pane does not show any 'moving' image
  while playing..

Thanks for your nice support..

Vegas is the place to add your audio.
I've never had a problem adding audio to a video (that has no audio) in Vegas.

I'll use Vegas to prep a video clip for import to Sonar (was using X3 for a long time but just upgraded to Platinum)
Then finish the audio in Sonar, export as 48/24 and add it to the vegas project where the 'real' video resides.
I drop a lot of markers in Vegas so I know exactly the frame where the audio needs to start.
If there are any problems down the line where the audio might not be exactly where I want it in Vegas,
then I just slice and slide it into place.

There's no comparison, in my opinion, with attempting to do it in Sonar.
I consider it impossible to finalize a video in Sonar.
I only use sonar to reference the video and to create the score, and then finalize and render in Vegas.

P.S.
If you have any sync issues in Sonar make sure to import the audio from the video also, even is it doesn't contain any sound,
and do delete the blank audio track.
I've found that Sonar needs that blank audio track that is imported with the video to maintain time for the Video.

I'll defer to Steve on the best way/place to do the job, but just for reference, Views > Video will give you the floating video window you're looking for in SONAR.

This one would allow Sonar to be considered a valid professional scoring tool.
http://forum.cakewalk.com/Lock-clips-tracks-and-folders-to-markers-SMPTE-m3384138.aspx

If you set the Timebase property of a clip to 'Absolute', it will maintain its SMPTE start time as tempo changes are made. Locking it would then be added insurance against having it move due to other editing operations. And if markers as also locked to SMPTE time, a clip with 'Absolute' timebase will effectively be locked to markers.

The only thing that can't be locked to SMPTE is the length/duration of a MIDI clip. If MIDI clip length is the problem (or also a problem), you should clarify that in the FR. I've requested a number of times in the past that setting Clip Timebase to Absolute would lock the absolute length of a MIDI clip as well as the start time; for a long time, the Ref. Guide erroneously indicated it would.

Re: Scoring video + MIDI sequencing + audio mixing in Sonar X3 Producer ?? 2016/10/24 14:31:32 (permalink)
My original post was about Sonar X3 being able to do film/video scoring
from imported video file using MIDI/audio tracks .
The answer is yes.
My problem is still that after importing a video
into Sonar X3 and then doing VIEW > VIDEO
there is no video preview window poping up to check the video live
but there is a new video track that shows images.
I'm using a Win8.1 64bit system with 2 HDMI screens.
Maybe the 2 screens are the problem here... (??)
I'll have to figure it out.

Are you sure it's not in the multi dock and you're just not seeing it?
type a "D" on your keyboard and then SHFT+D to maximize and then also check the docking options
if you find it and you can then undock it.

I'm not sure the Video Veiw can be docked. If that's not where it is, I would guess it's opening with coordinates off screen. I know you can set coordinates for Dialog positions in the registry, but I'm not seeing anywhere to do this for Views. You might have to 're-personalize' SONAR by launching it while holding Ctrl+Shift, but you'll want export/import keyboard shortcuts to restore them, and there may be other preferences that are lost; I'm not sure what-all is affected by re-personalizing.

Now I'm home and testing..
I found the video window was open but 'crushed' at the bottom
of the SONAR screen. So I resized it and now I can clearly see
this video view window with the SMPTE red letters on top of it. Fine.
BUT when I play back the imported video this video view
only shows a static purple square with no video playing..
I went thru all different preference settings with no success..
Again I'm using a video card with 2 simultaneous HDMI screens.
Sonar runs on the left screen and there is nothing on the right one.
All is running inside the left screen.
Weird...
BTW The imported video file is MPG1 and I can clearly see it on the upper video track.

>try a .mp4 1280x720
It does not work..

For MP4, MOV import files there are error window popping up:
Unable to import video - Unrecognized file format or invalid file.
.AVI or MPG1 files work.

See the 2 screen snapshots of my program:
http://www.arcenson.com/public/Sonar%20X3%20screen%20snapshot.JPG

http://www.arcenson.com/public/Sonar%20X3%20screen%20snapshot%202.JPG
(this second snapshot does not show the bottom purple view video window but its there in the program)
(print screen cannot snap the live purple square)

What is odd is that at SONAR startup, when it loads my project you can see a fraction of a second the image in the view video window but it disappears quickly and the view video screen gets purple and stay purple.
I don't know what to do.

I forgot to mention that I have 2 firewire video grabbers/players
connected on my PC for Vegas when capturing video.
Maybe SONAR 'sees' these devices connected and switch to one
of them for view video screen (external) when it starts my project instead of
using the actual default PC view.. (??)
Again I'm not close to my PC now and will have to check that
when I'm back home.

SONAR is able to import MPG1 files but the view video window
does not show anything..

And.. is this normal ??
http://www.arcenson.com/public/Sonar%20X3%20screen%20snapshot%202.JPG

What would help me a lot is a very short 'working' video file from
another SONAR X3 user that worked for him..

The file type would not matter..
What matters would be that the file shows in the view video
window of that Sonar user..
Anybody could PM me on that..

Re: Scoring video + MIDI sequencing + audio mixing in Sonar X3 Producer ?? 2016/10/25 11:35:48 (permalink)
I'm suspecting it might be that you don't have the codecs to decode the video.
I just tested with a 4 minute .mp4 at 1920 x 1080 in x3 and had no problems.
It ran smooth as silk.

I'll render a piece of that video and put it up on my site for you but it will take a bit of time.
I'll put a link here when it's up.

In the mean time here's a list of the codecs I have installed using "Sherlock" to find and print a list of them.
http://www.sightsea.com/renders/Codecs.txt

OK That was pretty quick:
Here's about 30 seconds of the .mp4 that I just tested with:
http://www.sightsea.com/renders/steve_karl_club_delta_test.mp4
(actually I re rendered 30 seconds from the same vegas project)

You should be able to see a good sync between the audio and video with the guy in the blue shirt pointing / directing the note hits, the fingers on the guitar necks and the box closing on the snare hit.

Steve,
Thanks for your nice support.
>I'm suspecting it might be that you don't have the codecs to decode the video.
I've been able to play all the videos that were not accepted by Sonar using VLC player.
I suppose VLC added the correct video codecs when I installed it months ago.. (??)
And I ask again the question:
is this normal ??

I don't know about the unchecked menu ... it just works here.
I can see the video so I don't care or even look at in the menu is checked or unchecked ... never have
I don't think it's relevant to you not being able to see the video.

Do you have the "Big Time" view enabled (in Views)? - looks like Big Time with SMPTE toggled.

I think you might be looking at the "Big Time" window and thinking it's the video display window.
Try the menu at the top, "Views" and then choose "Video".

IIRC - it's been a long time since I've done anything with Video in SONAR - you can only display the video if you turn off thumbnails. Maybe that has changed more recently -

I don't think I had selected Big Time anytime..
And remember, when I open my project I can clearly see very shortly
