Screamer - The Art Or Terror

Hi,

I've not posted much recently - I've been hard at work with one of the most difficult musical tasks I've turned my hand to... scoring a documentary.

I've never put music to video before but it's been a marvellous experience and hopefully the documentary's going to be ready for submission to Sundance in a couple of weeks.

Anyway - I've uploaded the End Credits music to Soundcloud: http://soundcloud.com/purplerhapsody/screamer-end-credits

As is usual with end credits, I've taken a couple of the themes and chord sequences used in the film and made them a bit more 'standalone'.

It's not my usual style (or maybe it is to others' ears) but I hope you enjoy it anyway.

The official movie site is http://screamermovie.com - there's not much there yet but I'm sure that'll change in the coming weeks.

Cheers,
Terry.
PS: For those that are interested - it's been recorded using Sonar X1b - with heavy use of Heavyocity Evolve for percussion and sound effects and East West libraries for orchestral sounds.

Hi Terry, it does sound very "cinematic". There's certainly no shortage of percussion ; ).  Good. job.

WOW!!! This is awesome! With that name, I had no idea what it would be, and it DID surprise me, coming from you. But this is just superb. I could listen to you play the piano all day anyway, but your orchestration skills are right up there too. (well, take that from a non-expert, but I know what I like to hear. :) ) :31--I was straining to hear that second piano. But that's minor. This is just great. Something I've dreamed of doing too, but don't really even know where to start. Anyway, masterful! Wonderful! :)

Hey Terry - this is excellent sir. Very evocative, the string theme from 1'15 or so is a class composition. plenty of energy in the percussion too, this would sound immense in a movie theatre!

    Hi,

Thanks to everyone that's taken the time to listen, and thanks for taking the time to comment too.

@Vicente - thanks for the compliments

@Janet - thanks! I surprised myself with this one. I was playing about with a sample package that sparked an idea and I thought "let's see where this one goes". I had huge problems mixing it, there are so many instruments and layers so I'm well chuffed that you like the end result.

@mgh - thank you! The director is submitting it to Sundance so hopefully the music will have the chance to be heard in good conditions on good equipment.

Thanks again to everyone that's listened.

    Cheers,
    Terry.

Nice work. It's interesting how it moves between themes without it seeming to be disjoint sections, or taking very long to make the transition.

@droddey - thanks! I was given the brief initially that the track had to be between 3 and 4 minutes long and I wanted to incorporate the themes that had been used elsewhere in the documentary so I had no choice but to link at least 2 of them together without a break. Strangely, the themes themselves are arranged completely differently from each other during the film but they both suit the style of arrangement for the credits - a very happy coincidence I think.

Usually if I was writing a track just for my own album I'd make a longer job of joining themes together - making a proper transition... and then I'd agonise over whether the transition sounded right, etc. Being restricted in this fashion really made me change the way I think about building up a track. Which I think is a good thing!
    Thanks for listening.

    Cheers,
    Terry.

    Hi Terry,

Sounds great, man. Outstanding composition and arrangement.

Love the how the different sections work together. Really nice mix/production, too.

    Hi,

@geeare1 - Thanks for listening, glad you like it.

@jamesyoyo - yea, I guess the twists and turns ares because I'm trying to mix three themes into a 3-4 minute End Credits sequence so the themes switch quite suddenly.

    Thanks for listening!

    Cheers,
    Terry.

Question: Does this track kick butt, or what?

    Answer: It most certainly does!

This is perfect for film. It all sounds so crystal clear! Some nicely compressed percussion in there.
