Screen Recorder Software
Hi, For those of you who create SONAR tutorial videos (and others who may know), what screen recorder software do you use or would recommend? I know there are some free ones out there, and that would be preferred (if it works well). There are tons of mixing tutorials and plugin demo videos on Youtube, but I can't seem to find what software is used to record these. Are there things to consider, like using ASIO for example? I'm interested in a program that would allow me to record my voice as well. OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) is frequently mentioned on Youtube, but seemingly mostly in gaming context. Any suggestions would be very appreciated. Thanks for your time.

You'll find these recommendations mentioned in podcasting tutorial videos and blog posts, but they're applicable for your intended use. To capture the audio, I got both the VB-Cable and Voicemeeter Banana apps. They're donationware. The work fine for free, with no restrictions, but they're good apps and actively maintained (which is important to me), so I donated for both. Note that when you donate for VB-Cable, you get two additional virtual cables. VB-Cable: http://vb-audio.pagespers..ange.fr/Cable/index.htm Voicemeeter Banana: http://vb-audio.pagesperso-orange.fr/Voicemeeter/banana.htm To capture/create a video, check out Mirillis' Action! app. Action!: https://mirillis.com/en/products/action.html And then check out this video on how to use them to capture SONAR:

Thanks, TheMaartian! I will definitely have a look at those links as well as the video. And thanks for the welcome.

Fleer Welcome indeed. As for your question, I use Camtasia ()
Thank you too, Fleer! I will have a look at Camtasia as well. Do you use this by itself, or do you need something additional for routing the audio (as posted by TheMaartian above)?

With Camtasia, I suspect that you would still need a virtual audio cable. Maybe not VM Banana, just VB-Cable. Techsmith is a great company. I've used SnagIt since Win95 (I knew one of the original developers). I have used Camtasia in the past. But it's $300. That's why I didn't mention it. Action! is $30, and I donated $20 for VM Banana, and you can try them both for free.

Ah, yes... the $300.00 price tag does indeed eliminate that option.

Would have for me as well, luckily it's a teaching tool at university.

Open Broadcaster Software is one of the most widely used by people who screen capture or stream themselves playing videogames. There are TONS of options for how the program works and captures what you're doing. Hands down one of the best options but also one of the most complex when you start digging through everything you can do with it. Also free.

Yes, I did notice that OBS seems to be a popular choice. I just wasn't sure if it plays nice with DAW's. In Windows, it seems, screen recorders do not capture the audio in DAW's if using ASIO drivers. But it looks like VB-Audio's Voicemeeter, as suggested by TheMaartian above, addresses this. Thanks again.

I use Voicemeeter and Corel Video Studio's capture. I need Voicemeeter to get ASIO output. It's a bit tricky to get set up gut works well enough. I used to use CamStudio but the last few times I DL's it, it had adware and/or malware in the exe (yeah - I did validate that it wasn't a false positive from my AVS). Too bad, I had used it for years.
