Scrimshaw -Second remix per your advice

This is a song that I've been kicking around for a few years.  I recorded it in Sonar7, but remixed it in X1 just minutes ago.  I'm trying to decide whether to include it with my latest collection of songs.  I would appreciate your thoughts and comments.  As always, many thanks for taking the time.

It can be found here:  http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?q=hi&songID=11157018

The above link now connects to the new version.

    Hi Lynn,

So, just taking this one on face value... I like the song.   Good vocal.  It's well mixed too!

but I do not care for the guitar sound/effects.   I personally would have done that much more organically, meaning with a really good cranked up tube amp tone.   It sounds like you used one of the amp simulators plus another effect.

I think with a good guitar tone, this one really works.   Just my dos centavos!

How do you like that!  two completely different opinions on the guitar tone.

I can't comment (too much) on the mix because I'm on notebook speaks? But I'm hearing it as a hard pan, which I'm traditionally not a big fan of.  And I echo the previous poster's comments regarding the FX. I would try a more natural sound.

Like this. You have an interesting style for sure - like the combination of sounds a lot. Might be my ears / earphones, but the whole thing could maybe be a smidge brighter. Ending is kind of abrupt.

The song and mix are interesting.  Don't like the guitar effect in the solo.  Not sure how many times I would play this.  The lyrics don't draw me in.

Your voice sits very well with this style.  Your power pulls in traces of Tom Jones (I mean this is a very good way).  Your vibrato moves smoothly into the crescendo of your voice.

The guitar riffs do seem a bit muddled.  It may just be my speakers, however.

I want to thank all of you that took the time to respond.  Your comments always prove to be very helpful.  I was a bit surprised that so many of you had the same thoughts about the guitar f/x.  I'm going to listen critically and try some different treatments on the guitar, and try it without any f/x.  Give me a day or two and I'll repost with a new mix.  I'm so glad to have so many ears aiding me.

Hey Lynn, nice work and some good creativity here but the mix feels a bit uneven to me. The guitar is poking way out and masking the bed that the rest of the instruments are making. I like the guitar fx btw, they fit the mood and bend of the song.

As a guy who actually has a scrimshaw wallet (bday gift from the Mrs. while at Martha's Vineyard), I wanted to hear this.

That hard lright guitar needs some balancing and was way too loud. When I turned my sub on, it went nuts, so you have some low end issues.

Thank you all for responding.  I remixed this song with the help of your ideas.  I brought the guitar closer to the center, I made the wet/dry mix of the solo a bit more dry, and I turned the synth bass down so as not to blow out any subwoofers.  I also balanced the strings in the left channel to be more equal to the guitar in the right channel.  If you have the time, please let me know if I'm in the ballpark.

I listened to the previous version and was about to comment how much I liked it when I was dragged away from the computer. Hmmmm! Anyway, I love the piece and also what you have done to tweak the mix. The vocals are crystal clear and I can hear every word perfectly - such a wonderful change! The sound is huge and marvelously wide - even on my antiquated speakers. A great song and a great mix - just wish it was longer!

This sounds a little better. However, that guitar w/the flanger or what ever it is still (to me, keep in mind opinions are like noses...) I would drop that flange, or whatever it is, and maybe use a verb or an echo or something else there.  Again though, friggen notebook speakers :-(

I got some M-Audio BX8a monitors for Christmas.  I have Sennheiser HD28 Pro earphones.  Why am I saying this?  it's because my listening experience has changed dramatically.  The monitors are so precise as are the earphones but a little different in the sound.  OK----- your song sounded good to me on both systems.  In the phones I hear a bit more reverb, but barely.  Dude, I loved the guitar sound for this song, and the song.  Production is great on both listening systems.  I think that somewhere down the line we need to work together.  This song really got me going.  The performance and vocals are great.

Thank you both for you comments.  It's amazing to me how "controversial" that little guitar solo has become.  In the end I chose to use a free chorus plug in from Blue Cat because it fattened up that solo as well as anything in my arsenal.  I think if most people had heard the solo without a flange or chorus they would have asked for one.  Warren, you are the first person to suggest that we work together in the future.  I'm all in favor of this idea.  I always enjoy your music, and it would be an honor.

    Hey Lynn
GREAT tune. Love the tone of the guitar, kinda has a GENESIS vibe.  I agree the guitar needs to be pulled back in the mix.  The open synth/violins sound a little dry to the guitar verb and space of the tune. I would add just a smidge of verb. You really have a super voice a little pitchy but fits the mood of this piece.  KUDOS!

I want to  thank all of you for listening.  I've taken your advice to lower the volume of the guitar, and I agree that it's balanced better.  I also tried to even out the ambience between strings and guitar.  I hope that you can find time to listen and give me some feedback.  Thanks all.

    Hey, Lynn,

Very cool song with a lot of different textures flowing throughout!

Tasty synth work, great vocals, and chunky guitar and a nice punchy, wide mix.

Really nice work, Lynn, have a good one!
