Scrimshaw - final mix?

Here is the second song in my upcoming compilation.  I want to thank you all for your help in FLYING ON NEW WINGS, and I hope you can bear with me again.  This song, SCRIMSHAW, was recorded on Sonar 7 in '08, but remixed and mastered in X2a just recently.  I posted it here last year before I remixed it, so some of you may remember it.  I incorporated many of your suggestions and added the console emulator on every track, which, I think, gives it more of a tape recorder sound, or more 3 dimensional.  What do you think?  The project is still open.

Last mix on 4/9

It can be found here:http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=11157018&q=hi&newref=1
I hope you enjoy it.  Cheers

The snare might work better with a tighter groove if you ditched some of the room on it. Also, the hats on the right side is a bit different; I would do a eq dip at 4k to take some of the biting edge off.

Vocals need a bit more sparkle and a ton more compression, as I strained to hear you against everything else.

Other than that, I loved everything about it, Lynn.

I also have a oval scrimshaw on my wallet that my wife bought for me on our last trip to Martha's Vineyard!

WOW!  What a great production!  Your vocals are excellent.  I like the guitar tones and other instrumentation.  Nice groove.  James makes some good points - maybe you made an adjustment since his comments?  The vocals sound well mixed to me now.

Another great, original track Lynn, you're on a roll lately. I just realized who your voice reminds me of a little - Jack Bruce.

Listening through headphones the mix seems just a little right-biased, due to that thick, heavy guitar. I like the tone though.

    Hi Lynn,
Nice mix.  I agree with James on his comments about drums.  Lead voc seems OK in level.  Sometimes I feel the lead vocal is rushing the track a tad - might just be me.
    I really like the bass.

    Hi Lynn,

Cool song and great, creative production/mix. I like the guitar tone/part but I do agree with James that it makes the overall mix a little right-heavy.

    Very nice, as always.

You illuminate a question I have been pondering. What do we call song collections in these digital iTunes days? CD's are really kinda dead, record does not work, even though more and more music is being released on vinyl again. Album works, but it still carries a bit of an LP overtone... compilation... is a good compromise I think. Good work Lynn. Solid production.

This is really nice. Everything sounds great!

I use the console emulator as well. I tend to like the 3rd button on the top right, put the big knob to about the 2:15 position and puch that button that makes that little light go on for the tracks and busses.

My body hurts from moving tons of snow so ciritical listening is out for now. I thouroughly enjoyed the tunage!!!

James, I'll use your ideas as the starting point on my next mix.  They should all be easy to attain.  Thanks so much!

Geno, thanks for your time.  I haven't done anything yet, due to time constrictions, but I'll hit it tomorrow.

James, you're right, it is right heavy, and I'll fix that.  It will go on a diet.

Rimshot, thanks for the positive comment on the bass.  It's the only song I play synth bass on this collection of songs.  The drums will be addressed.

Gary, thanks for your time and comments.  I'll fix that imbalance.

James, if I was selling them, you'd get your complimentary copy.  Thanks.

Shad, you and I must think alike at times!

Robert, so sorry about the show.  I did my turn last week.  Thanks for your kind words.  I use the console emulator almost exactly like you do.

Mark, thank you about the vocal.  The woman that I wrote this for not only made the scrimshaw, but inspired my vocal.  Thanks for your time.

    All the best,
    Lynn

Robby, you better get on X2, it's a great mixing platform.  In fact, I remixed this song after changing the drums and hi hat, as per Jamesyoyo.  I boosted the lead vox a bit, too.  Thanks for listening.

Good song.  Echo what James said.  I think its very close and probably only needs a couple of tweaks on a copule of knobs.... but which ones.. now that's always the trick isn't it?   But I think James points make sense.   Good job on the vocals, but a little too far back at points.  I like the orchestration and the arrangement.  Some cool guitar riffs too.

Hey Lynn- I definitely remember your original post on this, as Scrimshaw is not a tune that is easily forgotten.  I think it was the first piece of yours that I heard and it mad quite an impression.

The new production has much going on, and you seem to be doing a great job of handling all those moving pieces for the most part.  James has far better ears and equipment than me so I'll defer to him on most of the mix crits except to say that I'd prefer (like James) to hear the vocal better.  It's a great vocal, get it out there.

Excellent job other than the little nits.

Chas, thanks for listening and your reply.  Always appreciated.

Daryl, thank you for your comments.  I will boost the lead vocal when I remix it today.

John, thanks so much for you kind words.

Philz, I agree with you that the lead vocal could use more volume which will take place in a little while.

Robby, you won't be disappointed if you go the X2 route.

Bob, thank you for dropping by.  I'm very flattered that my voice has been mentioned with Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton.  But, I missed my mark-I was going for Ginger Baker.

BTW, I remixed today (3/11) boosting the vocals a touch in response to several suggestions.  I hope this is going in the right direction.

    Hey Lynn
GREAT piece.  KUDOS on your arrangement. A lot is going on but the instrument separation/EQing is sounding great on my end.  I'm really liking your performance and tone your getting form the electric guitar.  A solid sounding performance/mix.

Lynn, I love the song, good writing, good lyrics. On my speakers, to my faulty ears, the drums sound a bit distant, and I think your lead vocal could come forward a bit too. Well done! Mark

you have done it again. what a kool voice? i am really impressed but one thing is disturbing me the echo on the strings sounds a bit like a can. if i were you i would try to make it a bit wider and warmer (more definition) but other than that there is nothing to complain. All the Best
