Searching Old fashioned electronic drum sound

Hi all,
this will be easy (I hope).
Some of you will know that terribly cheesy sound of those very first electronic drum machines which came out early seventies (or so), a reference track to listen to the sound might well be Bob Marley's "Rainbow Country": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqAdW0lt6W8
Now is such an instrument to be found as a preset in one of the drum machines coming with Sonar?
I've been trying to find such a thing in SI Drum Kit, and Session Drummer, and in the rhythm presets of TTS-1. I am quite sure though that Sonar has this sound somewhere. I need it in a current project as preparation for a nasty surprise.
Thankxsssss

You can use a sample player, but it isn't necessary. There are many things you can do with samples. Tell us your version of Sonar and what your instrument preference is and let's see what we can figure out.

Seems this sound pack must first be processed in a sample editor such as Creative's "Vienna" to make an .sf2-file of it, otherwise this will not work. I downloaded it, however, I wasn't prepared to go through this lengthy procedure right now. Or do you have an idea of how to get the SI Drum Kit, or Session Drummer, to grab those sounds directly?
I notice of course the wealth of the .rar-file, 4 different versions of closed hihats (for example) suggest 4 different drum sets. So that would mean to sort the sounds to at least 4 different .sf2 sample banks. Sorry, but until I'll be finished with that, my interest in the music project I started will have vanished. It's right, I was looking for an instrument, I did not intend to build one. ;-)

Browsing through their sounds I found I am looking for a Roland TR-78, which should actually have come with the abundant wealth of sounds in my Sonar Professional (64bit, on a Win 10 machine).

But please can you give me a hint where exactly to save the samples: when I try to load it in Session Drummer, I cannot open this bunch of samples, because Session drummer expects an .fxp-file to access the samples.
Currently, I saved the folder Roland_CR78 in C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Vstplugins\Session Drummer 3\Contents\Kits.
Please update me. :-/

If the download is a collection of audio files, you will need to create at least one sfz file to get them all loaded into Session Drummer or the plug-in will only be able to use one sample per pad. If one sample per pad is enough, drag and drop the samples to the pads/kit pieces or right-click the pads/kit pieces and load instrument. To assign more than one sample per pad will take an sfz file. Here is a recent post containing information about sfz http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3456983. When I was creating sfz files, I copied an existing sfz file and using a text editor replaced the old sample names with the new samples.

Any wave file will play in session drummer. I sample my own stuff and I put it in the session drummers folder.
Very cool feature of Session drummer which you cannot do with AD.

Session drummers kit files are found
MyComp/Program/Cakewalk/VSTplugins/Sessindrummer

I owned one of those very original Roland's that I guess you would call analogue. I believe they used  a system of capacitors to burst white noise and then it was filtered to try and sound like parts of a drum kit..The tempo drifted around ,,,just like a real drummer :)
You could not make your own patterns so you where stuck with FOX TROT and MARCH. oh my god spare me from those memories!!! I find it amusing that 40 year latter that funky sound finds its way into music. Please, please don't use the cymbals!

Lots of old organs have funky drum machines built in. You can almost get them for free!   We have 2 where I work in the old folks home... if you want I can sample them ;}
Pretty sure this is the one I owned.

I'm not sure where the OP has landed in regards to "rolling your own."

Is there a vintage drum machine emulation included in the Sonar Platinum package? I can't think of one, but I'm sure you could get there if you have the synthesis chops.

Just trying to make sure the obvious isn't overlooked because that seems to be what the OP is looking for.

Re: Searching Old fashioned electronic drum sound 2016/09/26 00:35:51 (permalink)
Just listened to the Bob Marley track,,, I then googled it and found this--

Written by Bob Marley and produced by Lee “Scratch” Perry using a primitive rhythm box during the period from 1968-1972, “Rainbow Country” is one of Bob’s best.  “Rainbow Country”is one of the first recorded tunes to use a primitive drum box, and it was recorded during perhaps The Wailers most prolific recording period.  It is a song which many casual fans associate with Bob’s children, namely Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers.  The Melody Makers cover this tune brilliantly on their under-rated 1991 release “Jahmekya.”

So then I looked up what would have been available during those years.. And being Jamacia it might even have been older so might have been a mid 60's machine.

So we are looking at an Ace Tone or a  Rhythm Ace R-3
The Roland TR series came out 10-15 years later.

Ok, here is how that thing sounds:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCsI5If3H1E
So for me it would be interesting to find this machine as VSt Instrument. The thing is, I only can produce .sf2 files, using Creative Vienna Sound Font Studio, which are not being handled by Session Drummer or any other of Sonar's instruments: They need .sfz-files. And even in case I try applying the constellation "SoundFont Device", the sounds will only come out at such a low dynamic level they hardly can be heard.
What can I do, please?

Thanks for your hint.
I am sorry, I do not understand a single word. I am not a programmer, but a musician. Isn't there a software such as the Soundfont Studio, but for creating .sfz-files instead of .sf2? Or is there any tool for converting .sf2 to .sfz?
I've been trying to get things running, but with no result. Very frustrating. I am about to abandon the project.

I've seen a few sources over the years that say Perry's original drum machine, and the one used on Marley's "Natty Dread", was a Gibson Mestro Rythm King. It was a box that was very similar in concept, sound and function to the "percussion" sections that were often part of the "home electronic organs" that were popular in the 70s. They had a few pre-set fixed drum partterns, called things like "waltz", "polka", "latin" etc.

There's a youtube demo of a Gibson unit here -
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=u7b1KMc7xos

Most of these sounds are actually pretty easy to synthesise or replicate by abusing modern drum and electronic drum samples - severe bit reduction can usefully work the opposite of hi-fi, add in some eq and transient shaping. And remember that there are no accents and the pattern is fixed unless you e.g. remove hats and cymbals using a steep low pass filter (or a steep hi pass to remove the kick). Or isolate a single beat and pass it through a grungy delay and create patterns that way.

Sonar Platinum 64bit, Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit, I7 3770K Ivybridge, 16GB Ram, Gigabyte Z77-D3H m/board,
ATI 7750 graphics+ 1GB RAM, 2xIntel 520 series 220GB SSDs, 1 TB Samsung F3 + 1 TB WD HDDs, Seasonic fanless 460W psu, RME Fireface UFX, Focusrite Octopre.
Assorted real synths, guitars, mandolins, diatonic accordions, percussion, fx and other stuff.

Yes, I've been given quite some options here. Thankx. Either I fail to understand, or I fail to install properly. I found 2 VSt instruments for download. They come as zip files, a dll and a text note. I insert the dll to Sonar's VSt folder, I can open them in Sonar, but I do not find and sound file in those instruments.

I am sorry (again..) could you please be a bit more specific. I did scan all my plugins but this does not give me any hint that something was wrong.
What do you mean with "reset", please?
