Searching for midi keyboard that works on Windows 8

Hi, I'm searching for a midi keyboard that would work well on Windows 8 and sonar x2
I want a semi weighted 49 keys. I can connect the keyboard through usb or midi cable through RME babyface. I understood that if it is connected through the audio interface I would not need drivers,  but will the controllers (faders,  transport, pads) work with this configuration?
I highly appreciate your suggestions.

Is anyone using one of the below midi keyboards with Windows 8 and sonar:
    - Novation impulse 49
    - M-audio axiom 49 or pro 49
    - Akai mpk 49
What is your experience? And are you connecting it directly to the pc through usb cable or through a midi interface.?

I would suggest using USB over MIDI only because it saves you plugging in a power supply to your keyboard.

I only have a cheap one so I can't advise on the devices you mention. No weighting at all on my humble PCR-300. But it does come with Windows 8 drivers and it works nicely as a control surface with Sonar. I think they have been superseded with the A PRO series now.

Out of the three you mention I think I prefer the Novation Impulse the best, on looks and ergonomics. But I suppose you need to get your hands on one.

It's a real pity the Roland keyboard does not have semi-weighted keys though because I really like the joystick style pitchbend and modulation controller compared to the two separate wheels. I've got a JP-8000 that comes with the same joystick and I find it much better being able to control pitch bend and modulation at the same time... much easier than manipulating two wheels, in my opinion.

Good luck with your search some of the keyboards available now look great

This one looks great, but it's a bit pricey:-

It's not the keyboard that would have issues as much as the drivers for the sound card/interface. If the interface has drivers that are supported on W8, and the keyboard has 5 pin true midi..... you are good to go. Many keyboards plug in straight with USB , and I'm guessing here, but that should not be a problem either. The keyboard manufacturer should have the needed drivers available for DL from their support site.

Yes synkroton, the SL MK II looks very nice, i also like the look of the Novation Impulse.

Guitarhacker, the babyface drivers run smooth on my system and windows 8, so i guess i do not have a risk since i can connect the controller either through usb or through the babyface.

I will try to test them at a local dealer.

    Thank you

    I don't have windows 8 I have windows 7.
I also have an AKAI MPK 49, which I HATE.
As soon as cash allows, I will be getting a Novation of some kind or another.
The AKAI's main problem is the midi drivers / software seem ancient and cause all sorts of ridiculous problems - drop outs for no reason / phantom messages from the AKAI to soft synths if I don't remember to disconnect (disconnect by changing routing, not physical disconnection) after use - I REALLY like the Keyboard aspect of the product and is the reason I purchased this to replace my MAudio Mid Air, which like most MAudio Mid Air's went wrong!!
I will keep the AKAI but use it as a controller for my Hardware synths - I hope it can manage this. But as a controller for use with a Computer - NEVER!!!!
    Hope this helps

I want to have a feedback for the performance of Novation's Automap control software with windows 8 and sonar x2.
