Second pair of monitors
Hi all. I'm after a pair of monitors for my secondary rig. Budget is capped at £200 and they must be active. I'm not able to go out and listen/compare different models so I'm wondering what the consensus is on the following: Alesis M1 Active 520 KRK Rokit RP8 G3 M-Audio BX8 D2 Tannoy Reveal 402 Any ideas good people?

Have you thought about Auratones? Don't know the price in lbs. My other suggestion would be the 5-inch Yamaha MPS, but I think those are more than 200. @

This place has people who put up reviews (their own opinion I suppose) if anyone has done that in one section, or you might see a thread in the Low Theory End (different sections to look around in) for opinions on speakers. It looks as if you are mixing perhaps 8" speakers with a 5" and a 4", but then I am not sure. http://www.gearslutz.com/board/ The 5" JBLs new ones are getting good reviews. People want to know about the Equators Speakers 5" or 8". JBL also makes the Control 2PS, but those are mainly like computer speakers and I think 4", but then......................... I am not sure and liable to mix things up. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/LSR305/http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/LSR308/http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Control2PS/I have heard Tannoy mentioned, but then there are usually lots of opinions out there. Listening is the best thing to do. And checking around on websites. I have not heard them all, but KRK are mentioned as bassy.

Of those you listed, I would go with the KRKs. Not exactly my goto monitors, but they seem to be used by everyone, so they may work for you. Also, if you do consider the Equators, I would go with the 8s. Although it may be out of your price range, most monitors with smaller woofers (than 8") will leave you with something wanting (particularly, good bass extension). On the other hand, the D5s have a very good stereo image and a nice response, not incredible, but workable. Kind regards, tecknot

I still liked the JBLs 305. Going from the source to the speaker - recorded by that mic -> to my computer speakers. Although different than the source a little, not so much considereing these computer speakers I was listening to it all through. Maybe try headphones next. Don't have money for $1500 Event Opals and anyway to me they made the lows and highs more, than the middle. Oh well. That Soundcloud site was interesting though with all the speaker comparisons!

spacealf I suppose you can look for more of these type of videos perhaps to get an idea about the sound out of different speakers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oFwIyxSKjY Compares the Yahama, JBL, and KRK speakers. 5" woofie woofer, and tweeting tweeter. Here you go with their Soundcloud website with 52 speaker comparisons: https://soundcloud.com/sonic-sense-pro-audio/sets/studio-monitors
Well spacealf, thanks to your Soundcloud link, I've listened to loads of different monitors and have just ordered a pair of KRK Rokit RP5 G3's. I know that any test like this is flawed, for many reasons, but it should give an indication of what to expect, so the decision was made. Roll on Friday!! Thanks again to everyone

Yep at least you can get an idea of how different all the speakers sound between each other. Now which speaker was that again? I might go crazy first though comparing all those speakers. Of course I think they should have had the mics on the speakers around one meter away from the speaker instead of 18 inches. At least they were consistent I suppose according to what they were saying on the website. According to people at Gearslutz the Tannoys roll off the highs and the lows but do not sound bad except for that. The others well who knows? The 52 comparison test did not include every speaker listed then.

Well I've had the Rokits running since Friday and I have to say, I am quite impressed! My wife and a few friends have even noticed, it's a much more detailed sound than I was getting previously and they really benefitted from rolling the highs & lows off by 1dB (they're pretty closed to a fairly thin wall) They won't displace my Adam's in the studio, but this is for my secondary setup downstairs, used mainly for internet/music/gaming but I've also got Sonar installed here to sketch out ideas. These are well worth the £250.00 I paid for them (yeah, a bit over budget, but WTH!!!) Thanks all.

We have a chain of stores called Richer Sounds, who are just box shifters, though they do still sell Hi-Fi separates, some of which are of good quality. Then there are a few boutique dealers who sell vastly overpriced "audiophile" units. And really expensive speaker cable
