Seeking help on video/audio project
Sonar Professional : I am new to video work in my DAW, need tips. My granddaughter recently performed a solo ballet at a national competition. My daughter was given a video of the dance on which someone tried to overdub the song, so all the venue noise is out, but it's not synced well. I have the song as mp3, and she's sending the video soon, so want to educate myself before that. So can I use Sonar Professional to sync the two? And if so any tips...Thanks

When you import the video into Sonar, it will show as one audio track, and one video track. If you do not need the existing audio, delete it, and import the song that you want to sync the video to.

OK that is really helpful....kind of easy. Is there any maneuvers that I need to know for syncing or just make small audio track snaps right or left. ..

I would suggest leaving the original audio track in place, turn OFF snap to grid in SONAR (the "N" key toggles snap) and then manually move the MP3 around until it matches the original audio
You should be able to use both your eyes (as you may be able to see the audio transients in the original audio) but most importantly use your ears to confirm the audio is lined up - and then the ultimate test is both ears & eyes to check the dancing looks in sync

Nice idea to leave off the snap to grid. On using eye/ears..I think almost there, one way by watching her very initial dance move and what lyric in the song she cued on. It helps that the song is a vocal. Like you said. Then further in the dance another distinct dance move was again very close to the matching lyric as the original sound track. I hope the syncing retains itself well with the final export /save.

Never delete original sound unless it is causing some kind of performance issue. Mute it once you have achieved sync. Keeping it will give you more options like mixing in some live sound for atmosphere or bringing in cheering at the end.

Ideally what you want is the video with the original live sound instead of the overdub. Then you can align the music recording with the original sound and then simply mute the original live sound. It might even be more practical to do this in your video editor software. If you can not get a copy of the video with the original live sound, then you are just left with having to sync the sound based on visual cues. There's no magic way around that.
Splat, Win 10 64bit and all sorts of musical odds and sods collected over the years, but still missing a lot of my old analogue stuff I sold off years ago.

THANKS ....thanks for these helping posts. I think I have this video/audio spot on. Once I cued the initial part of the audio to match her opening dance move, the rest fell into place. She's done this performance so many times that her dance is near perfectly timed to every beat...BTW she ended up winning 1st place in her category!! 9 year Olds, solo ballet. The song is The Glow.

Don't delete the original audio track. Cakewalk disagrees but I have determined that Sonar needs the audio track to maintain the original speed of the video.
Any time I've removed the audio track in Sonar the speed of the video changes.
Archive it and hide it is OK.
