Select Midi devices - aarrrrghh ! Plse can anyone help me ?

First of - sorry for cheating a little, I'm using 8.53 PE, but it seems there's never anyone in that forum these days and I need to get this sorted and figured there might be a few former 8.5 users in here.

This is a new installation on a new PC. When I go into menu to select midi in/out devices, my choices are there with the tick boxes next to them, so I select the one I want,  press OK and immediately get a pop up window saying .......no midi devices have been selected do you want to select them now or carry on without them, so I choose select now, tick the boxes again - same result. If I close the window and go back again none of the boxes are ticked.

Am I doing something wrong here ?

Any audio tracks play just fine. On synths that have an onscreen keyboard I can play them with the mouse ok.

Is your soundcard set to ASIO mode? What soundcard do you have?

What MIDI devices are you trying to select? For example, USB microphones usually cause this kind of problem.

In Preferences-Audio-Payback and Recording, make sure Share Drivers with other Programs is checked.

WDM which is how it was before and what it defaulted to when I installed the drivers.

It's a yamaha midi keyboard - edirol fa66 interface, but the keyboard goes to the PC via serial port. I've also tried connecting with midi cables through the fa66, but still no dice

The audio is working, though for some reason it's set at 16bit even though I selected 24bit in the audio options box

To be honest, I don't think serial port connections work anymore, especially if you have Windows 7. New computers don't even come with serial ports and haven't for a few years. I think you have to go through the FA66.

So why isn't the FA66 working? Its a Firewire interface. Is Windows seeing it? Check the Windows Device Manager and make sure its listed. Otherwise, you need to debug that. If Windows doesn't see it, then neither will Sonar. Try unplugging and replugging the firewire cable. If that doesn't work, then reinstall the FA-66 drivers. You have a better chance of getting that working than the serial port.

It's not W7 it's XP ( as it was before) and I had a serial port put in specifically for this as I have another keyboard that I wanted to put through the fa66 so I don't have to keep unplugging.

Anyhoo, I've managed to get midi working through the fa66 now, so at least that's something. Still Puzzling me is why SONAR is running in 16bit mode even though I have selected 24 bit in the audio options. Any ideas ? I'm guessing something to do with the on board soundcard ? The audio is playing through fa66, but do I need to disable the on board card somehow to get 24 bit working. I'm sure I didn't do anything last time, it just worked right out the box.

Well, I know I could never get my Korg serial interface to work with Windows XP.

There are 2 places to change the bit depth:

Preferences-Audio-Driver Settings - Not sure if you can change it here.

Preferences-File-Audio Data - I believe this is where you have to change it.

Thanks - this interface/driver used to work like a charm, so it's a puzzle for sure.

I had selected 24bit in the audio options menu , but you have to change it in the global settings too. It's fine now. Thanks for your help.
