Selecting MIDI channels

I have Sonar Professional (I assume it is X3) and I have a project wherein I have a track outputting to theTTS-1 soft synth. I want to be able to change MIDI channel output for that tract so I can access the different parts in the TTS-1. Apparently, I should use the Chn control. There is no such control that I can see in the Track inspector.

Somewhere in the web I read I need to click the All button to select what controls are shown - there is no such button either. Praps Sonar X3 works differently?

A better option is simply to add another instance of the instrument mapped to it's own midi track. Then you can switch patches by changing tracks. It's instantaneous.

The MIDI channel selector is there in the Track Inspector, as well as in the track header in Track View. It has the letter "C" on it. When you click on it, you'll get a dropdown list that will say something like "1: TTS-1, 2: TTS-1 ... 16: TTS-1".

The TTS-1 is multi-timbral, meaning it can play up to 16 separate sounds, each on its own MIDI channel. If you want the TTS-1 to handle more than one part, you'll have to insert additional MIDI tracks and use the "C" dropdown list to assign their MIDI channels. If you want separate audio tracks, the TTS-1 offers four audio outputs, meaning that even though you can have 16 sounds each can only be assigned to one of the four outputs.

Look at track 11 See the second row of dialog boxes
1- Velocity
2- SHows the 5TTS-1    ( have no clue what the 5 means)
3- Shows 3 TTS-1 as this is Channel 3
4- The bank
5- The Patch

So if you chose the TTS-1 as the Midi track output tn all you do is go to the 3 box and select which of the 16 channels you want for that sound.

TTS-1 has basic sounds that are a great starting point and super handy for playing downloaded midi GM files.

For a real easy way to play a GM midi file do this:
Under Preferences/Midi/Devices/OUTPUT --UNCHECK ALL BOXES- This will let Sonar OPEN a midi file and load TTS-1 automaticly with all channels set and ready to play the song as it was composed.
You must OPEN  the midi file, not import it.
You might want to set Windows to open Midi files with Sonar. So then all you need to do is download a file and double click it and it will open in Sonar ready to play. Here's an example of a web site with lots's of free files. Do not use any web site that asks you to install something. Midi files should download quickly without other pages opening and are very small.
http://www.midiworld.com/search/3/?q=country

Once you have your song in Sonar now you can experiment with better sounds and replace parts one by one with other VST's. TTS_1 can sound pretty good if the person who sequenced the song new what they where doing, but the Drums and Bass are low quailty comaired to most others we have in Sonar.
That said I really like TTS-1 kick and brushes. The GUI is very deep and you can edit sounds and add 2 effects.
Be aware that changes to certain settings in the GUI are overwritten by the above track inspector settings.

I always replace the TTS_1 instruments as example:
Bass- SI Bass ( you might have to transpose +12)
Piano-Air mini grand ( or you can use True Pianos)
Drums - AD2 - make sure to set to GM mode.
Then things like organs, horns and what not you have lots of choices in  Dim Pro etc. I use Air expand pak.

Hi guys, thanks very much for all the help.

OK I worked out how to change the MIDI channel via the Track Inspector, however in the Track View, there is no button with C on it or any other apparent way of changing the MIDI channel. However, since it is not an operation I'm going to have to do very often, I'm happy to use the Track Inspector.

Regarding the TTS-1, it's a good basic tool to at least get composition going. Sounds are not at all bad, just not necessary brilliant (ie dont look for a decent Mellotron or Taurus Bass 5, for example  )- but good for a basic tool. Worth having, esp having a 16 instrument palette available.

Anyhoo, cheers all

I often use the TTS-1 as a placeholder during composition, then go back and substitute more sophisticated libraries later in the process.

The TTS-1 was my main drum sampler for about two years (back before CW started bundling Session Drummer), until I was able to invest in my first serious drum instrument (Drumkit from Hell, predecessor to Superior Drummer). With judicious use of distortion, EQ, layering and dynamics, the TTS-1 actually did a quite acceptable job. It remained my go-to for brush kit and tambourine until very recently. It's still my go-to for triangles.

Did you not read my post? I thought I made it clear the dialog for choosing a channel.

I did indeed, but I didn't see that control on my track in the Track View - I have my tracks auto-fitted to the View, and it shows only three rows, I've only just realized I needed to drag the bottom of the track down so I could see the control on the 4th row.

But if I then autofit again, it goes back to 3 rows, surely it should autofit so that controls on the track are all shown?

Re: Selecting MIDI channels 2017/10/31 00:42:49 (permalink)
Cactus...all this time and I never knew that. But since I tried it on a few different midi files it does NOT pick up channel 10-Drums.Actually doesn't even open the drum tracks. BUT, the drums playback. But cannot be found on any track? Almost like it is hiding the rhythm track? I tried soloing each track one ata time and after doing this the drums NEVER came in? How weird. But if I play the track back normally, the drums play? Totally freaked, Guess I cannot use it this way.
What am I missing?

J*****Just to add to the weirdness if I add a midi track, any track #, the drum track appears out of nowhere? Really?
Thanks

The "C" Channel,  "B" Bank and "P" Patch are in 2 places.
The inputs "I"  and VST instrument ( see little piano icon)  are also in 2 places and found down at the bottom of the left hand Console

Thanks Cactus but that was th first thing I tried. Have tried it again a bunch of times. Of course you do not know what you have selected because the menu item does not change. But I have opened and closed multiple times and tried many times selecting and then selecting again, etc.
But as soon as I add a midi oe audio track anywhere in the project the drums appear? Very weird.

Also they are "there" for a nanosecond" when the midi file opens, then they disappear? I checked track manager and all boxes are checked to show.

If it is only one project behaving this way I would consider making a fresh project and copy evrything over. One should not have to do this but in the past I've had to do this when a project became haunted,,, well it was Halloween!

What you can do is save each track as a template as well to speed things up. What ever is causing the Haunted drum track should be left behind..

Or how about this..
Insert a new midi track
Get the haunted drum track to show and copy past it to the new midi track.
