Send automation question
If I have three tracks, all with a send to a reverb bus, I group those sends, shouldn't automation for one of the sends affect all three in the group?

Good point. I checked it and there's a bit of a hitch with the concept of automation and grouping, at least as far as it's implemented in Sonar. - You can consider the controls grouped properly whenever you modify one of the visual send controls (assuming, of, course, you have set them to a 'group').
- Automation though, appears to be per channel.
In practical terms, this means you cannot draw by hand the automation for one of the sends and expect the other two to follow. However, if you set each channel to record automation and you modify one of the channels send control during playback then the other two will follow and each will record the same identical automation. If you need to make changes, you'll need to do via the send control, not the automation lane in the track view.

Yes Gene, recording automation will work PROVIDED you remember to use the control key in conjunction with whatever control you are automating. I have also, at least in the past, had to write enable the parameter for each & every track that I want automation to be written. i don't know if this is still current behaviour, not done it for a while. You don't need to assign them to a permanent group - just ctrl click each track, enable write automation and you're done.

If there are a lot of them, wouldn't it be simpler to insert an intermediate bus to receive the sends and edit the automation just once in the bus ?

As ever Paul, there are always several ways to accomplish the same thing.

Thanks Colin. I wasn't suggesting my idea was better (I've never used sends to date), it was more a request for confirmation that I'd understood the situation correctly, and that my idea might have some merit as an alternative. I'll take your comment as indication that I wasn't completely off in left field [obscure baseball metaphore].

It seems weird that you can group three sends (assign to a group, not quick group is this particular scenario) and one send will affect all three but if you add automation to one of them, they are technically not grouped even though they are...

Not at all Paul, your idea has great merit and I think it's extremely useful that we can mix & match methods to suit a particular task. It can be a bit difficult to remember ALL the options, especially with my dwindling memory cells......
