Sending a CD for duplication

I think I know the answer but I thought I'd try to get some confirmation or other opinions...

I've just finished producing my first CD for a band I'm working with that is going to be sold and distributed (yeah!! ). The band doesn't have a following yet, so they're going to start out with 100 or 200 copies. I'm doing this through DiscMakers and they give the option of uploading MP3s or sending in the master CD. Since MP3 files are so compressed, wouldn't there be a noticable difference uploading the files vs. sending in a master CD? The band is in a time crunch to get the CDs back before a couple of upcoming gigs, and the artwork isn't done yet, so if the consensus is that uploading MP3s is fine, it would save some time to go that route.

Thanks.

I've never heard that story before - I deal with Discmakers too. I will have to look into that myself but do not send MP3's for duplication unless you don't care about the sound quality. Send an audio CD.

Thanks - that's what I thought. It's the upload option at DiscMakers under the do-it-yourself short-run duplications. That appears to be their only option for getting less than 1000 CDs, but they do give you the option of sending in the master CD, which is what I'll do.

I just got off the phone with Discmakers and they confirmed what I thought - they do not recommend MP3 at all. If you can point to something specific where you read that please forward the link but that is 100% not right. Never use MP3 for duplication or replication services (unless you specifically want MP3 which doesn't make much sense to me).

I stand corrected - you are right - Discmakers does allow you to upload MP3's for replication. I didn't know that (ya learn something new every day )

The rep I spoke with didn't really know because it is a different organization and department.

Anyway - I guess it's OK to do that with Discmakers but I would suggest that unless you are desperate to send an audio CD.

    Anyone else care to comment?

Thanks again - I don't want to sacrifice sound quality so I'll send the CD.

You'll lose a lot with MP3, I think everything after 15KHz gets dropped during the compression stage, while I think a WAV goes out to 18KHz or 20KHz.

And uh..don't make the audio CD from MP3's :) You'll wanna make it from WAVs.

Better yet... You should have your wav files mastered by a mastering house on to CD and then have them send the master to DiscMakers.

With today's high bandwidth, high cap storage technology, we should be sending uncompressed wavs. Even a little lossless compression such as WinRAR will save only 30%, (OK, WinRAR is a good tool) via self-extracting archive. Converting mp3's to CD and selling them is a disservice to the industry. I sure hope this isn't a harbinger of what's to come.

    I'd rather be playing Bass:

This is the way to do it. If you send MP3's or WAV's you lose the inherent CD text and whatever other data is embedded onto the master CD. I know Discmakers will do that for you for an extra fee but...

For the quick who cares if it is dirty and sloppy, the mp3 upload could actually be a service. But this wrenches me inside emotionally something terrible. Ya see - I like music.

Krizrox is right, you prefer an audio CD to an mp3 collection. I even cringe at the idea of an mp3 for an audio book duplication.
