Senior Consession at a Rock Concert !!!!

Well it had to happen. I just booked tickets to see Fairport Convention. As we are all over 60 we got a concessionary price, £21 each instead of £23.

Maybe this should be in the deals forum?????

I'd like to see them. I somehow missed FC back 'in the day' but I found them later through Iain Matthews and Richard Thompson. Valley Hi is still in my regular rotation, I love Old Man at the Mill. He does it very well.
I hope you enjoy the show. The lineup (from their site) looks good.

I'm 55...

Decades ago, my mother was in the habit of sending me a check for my birthday. $1 for each year. When I turned 30, I got a check for $30 with a little "Happy 30th!" in the memo field.

I took the check to the bank to deposit it (yes, that was necessary back in the tech stone age). The teller was a nice young girl, still short of her 20th. I handed her the check and the deposit slip. She looked at the check, saw the memo field, and said something like the following to me:

"Oh, I'm so sorry."

Grrrrrrr. Right when I was damn tired of being 20-something.

When I saw YES a couple of years ago, here in the Casino in Oregon, it was the greatest convention of seniors and uglies I ever encountered. I kept thinking this was Halloween and everyone was dressing like Steve Howe! He could pose for the skeleton in the Grateful Dead's piccies!

I have a feeling that Grace Slick was right when talking about the "geriatric hippies" ... but some of these folks are young at heart ... Daevid Allen being one of the best examples! See the GONG Un-Convention ... even Steve Hillage comments on it.

Enjoy Glyn! Only saw FC once, that was mid-'90's in Swindon. They were excellent as I recall.

I did see them once before some time back but with close to the current line up with Rick Sanders on fiddle and Simon Nicol up front.
Currently is Nicol, Pegg, Conway, Sanders and Leslie.

Must have been hell of a band with Swarbrick, Denny and Thompson!

There are some videos around, some with very poor quality ... but Ken Russell's special on Folk Music has a nice clip of FP with Thompson and Swarbrick exchanging licks ... and it is good. For some reason, that one, and even the film made about Thompson (Solitary Life -- review was posted here on Cakewalk), do not mention Sandy Denny ... and no one has made a true/pure documentary on her, and in fact, Dave Cousins, of Strawbs talks more about her than anyone at FC, or connected with FC, including Joe Boyd. AND, if anyone can do a great documentary on Sandy, I bet you Joe Boyd would be the one ... in fact, he should have been the subject of one, a long time ago ... the list of bands that he was either responsible or spent time with, is insane, and they are all legendary.

On the remastered "Rising for the Moon", there is a 2nd version of "One More Chance" with Sandy doing it on piano alone, and it is even more haunting than the version on the album (a superb piece of music with a truly beautiful duet), and it adds another dimension to the song and the person ... she did not get another chance, as it were ...and one bit I came across said that the piano piece was done just a couple of weeks before she passed away.

BTW ... I did not get any "senior" concessions for Steve Hackett ... I guess that anything Genesis related means ... ohh well ... I think I will pass on Steve ...

Re: Senior Consession at a Rock Concert !!!! 2016/02/25 06:14:40 (permalink)
It was a thouroughly enjoyable evening, and unlike some of the recent concerts I have attended it was close on a full house (appologies for yet another Fairport album pun). I doubt if there were more than a handful in the audiance that did not qualify for the senior discount.

Great interplay between Rick Sanders fiddle and Chris Leslies mandolin throughout, and what a great bassist and all round entertaining fellow Dave Peg is. Simon Nicol's voice is holding up well, it is the bands 49th year and he is the only original member.

Crazy Man Micheal was a highlight for me, Nicol doing an excelent job on a song so closley associated with Sandy Denny. Other "oldies" included "Ye Mariners All", "Walk a While", "Lord Marlbourough" (written by an 18th century Alastair Campbell), "Matty Groves" and the inevitable encore "Meet on the Ledge".

And not just nostalga, there was a lot for their "most recent"  album ("we won't say last, thats tempting providence") "Myths and Heros" and "Hawkwoods Army" for a 2007 album was a standout anlng with a Chris Leslie song about the North West Passage" which I look for (the song, not the passage).

And I won't say any more about the Steeleye Span parody "Crudites" for fear or spoiling it for those woh may be catching them on this tour.

I know what you mean, the incestious nature of these bands, coupled with "senior memory" makes things a bit hazy at times.

I had recollections of seeing Fairport at Dartington Hall in Devon in the dim and distant past. Simon Nicol was there for sure, but then I remember Ashley Hutchens and Cathy Lesurf. Yes, it was The Albion Band and must have been the early 80’s before I went to live in Holland in 1983. It must have been Dave Matticks on drums.
