    Clint,

This song has a cool, slinky pop-rock groove, with a late 70's vibe. Great guitar tone and sound. The song is real good and has a classic feel. The vocals are smooth and well recorded.

    Good stuff.

    Cheers,

I love your usual slow groovy drums and guitars, as always.  The EP is a particularly sweet addition on this one.  Nice!

Sounds excellent on my monitors, Clint.  The snare crack is really nice in this song.  Not blowing smoke, but I have been digging your Strat tones so much on the last few songs, that you have me GASing for an MIA Strat again.

I am not really hearing anything that I would suggest changing.  Much more, I am really liking the tunes you are putting out lately.  I have already marked this one for my play list.  Great Job!  Wish I could find something to nit at, but.......

Thanks, Michael. That is the Southern Soul kit from Toontrack, played by Randy Treadway on an Octapad. I hope everyone feels free to critique the mix. (it helps a lot!) I know the playing could be better (as always), but we were going for a live feel. The recording was quick and sloppy, but I spent a lot of time editing and mixing.

I was wondering if it was "that" song with the Soul Kit.  Drums sound really nice.  Git sounded pretty good to me, either you edited a LOT, or your slop is pretty descent.  Wish I could "slop" that well.

I agree, though, there are others hear with better ears than mine.  I know you are looking for an advanced critique.

    nice clint!

    agree with bert,
on the influences shaking the 70's groove,

    eagles, boz scaggs,

it's a cool laid back vibe,
    nice performances, in the pocket.

    the drum kit sounds good,
    though i want to hear more high end across the whole kit;
from about 2khz up, and especially around 8-10k,
    it sounds dull to me.

i don't know if this has been 'mastered' or not,
because that alone, could fix the frequency imbalance,
    because it needs more presence,
    but without adding any harsh.

i think the guitar solos would sound better with LESS gain (think jay graydon on 'peg'),
seems a bit too hot for the sound of the song as a whole,
but well played, wouldn't change any of the actual performance

Ya know...that's almost exactly where I made a EQ cut in the drums, and I was thinking the same thing about the guitars. Too much gain. This has only been mastered by me and will be easily fixed. My drummer has some ideas too...I told him to wait until I have enough for a proper cd when I can master the whole and we will make some more changes then.
Good ears Bat. Thanks for the ideas.

    beautiful guitars, vocals I thought
could not get a mix this good, still making some suggestions purely hoping they help you.
the freqs under say 60Hz sound a hair quiet to my ears.
would take off a hair of the snare reverb tail/decay
would choose a simpler kickdrum pattern for the start and Sensing Sarah part, on 1 and 3 and then on 1 and 3 AND..
just a super simple rock pattern would be my choice to add some groove/dance to the start.
Would keep the current kick patterns for the parts the singer is.
Then for the Sensing Sarah part maybe hats and closing them befor 2 and 4 or someting.
Just to add some separation between the guitar theme part and vocal part, and to put an accent on Sensing Sarah and giving it something warm/special or so (maybe brushes, or some synth pad...or percussion..)
    Really Great song !!!

Thanks for your comments Wouter! I'll pass them on to the drummer! Hahaha! This mix (mid) was High passed around 40hz. Actually everything was high passed at 40hz. The side was high passed around 140hz. The reverb on the snare was changed 20 times. I couldn't decide if I wanted it on the wet side or dry side. In the end I tried to find a balance with the guitars. I used Valhallavintageverb.

would swap the mid filter for a bell cut, if there's too much sub..
really like to try tweak this song (as a training for me, and maybe you'd like it), if you're interested please let me know.

It's a high pass filter split into mid/side.
I don't mind at all if you want to try and tweak the song. I currently don't have a way to send a wav. file. I can send the MP3 to play with.
I need to setup a dropbox account or something I guess.

AWESOME !!!  Will make sure you won't regret it....but it'll take me long unfortunately.
Don't have a dropbox account either, would be happy to send a memory-stick with a prepaid UPS or DHL return envelope.
Sonar project files or bundles, raw wavs (would be best ofcourse) or anyhing...would be great.

some time ago, Youtube started to process the audio from the video uploads (iic they're still doing so).
right after loading it will sound like the uploadfile
but then overnight or so, they run it through a preset compression thing and it get's very dull, imo.
I've skipped this Youtube processing tool ones or twice I think by pure luck..

    Clint,

Sounds really good to me.  I like the song a lot too.  Mix is good, nothing that can't be tweaked during the mastering process, i.e. a little more 8-10k, etc...   Reminds me a bit of the Eagles......

    I listened to the YouTube version . . .

Clint, I don't think Sarah's going anywhere if you keep writing and mixing songs as well as this. Really really well done.

    Love the Snare!

There are sections where the ride cymbal plays a lot but it's a very static pattern. You might throw a triplet in there once in a while on the bar.

The very end cymbal got squashed a little, you might look at that.

Did I miss a bridge? Then it WOULD be cool '70's in all its glory!

Holy cow, great song, love the mix, no crits from me there.

    cheers,
    -Tom

Thanks for the comments and for listening! I did think about adding a bridge, but it was already getting a bit long and I didn't want to cut what was there. As far as the ride goes...I kind of left all drum decisions up to my drummer Randy. He's a minimalist by nature. I had to lobby pretty hard for the crashes that are in there!

Liked it a lot -- can't fault anything with it from my setup.  Took the opportunity to listen to some of your other stuff on SoundCloud.  Really dig The River Song.  I am always impressed when an instrumental is able to hold interest all the way through like that.

just tuned in on time for a new Clint Martin original...
Cool tune with a nice flow! Great performance and mix translates really well over here!
I think all tweaks would be just a matter of taste.

    Best regards,

Ha! I've had to "lobby" with a drummer as well! It's a pretty tough go sometimes! But your drummer plays very well and has excellent timing for the things he? is doing, so that's all good. Have him listen to Pete Ray Biggin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qppPJAul2g

Well, He used an Octapad with Kick and Hi hat pedals to record through EZ Drummer 2 and we used the new Southern Soul EZX...so I did have the piano roll to make his timing sound like Neil Peart! Hahaha! He was actually very, very close and I didn't fix much. I try to leave the velocities alone as much as possible for example. We were not going for perfect.
