Separating Drum Output channels

I've read in different books, etc. on recording that some systems have the ability to give each drum/cymbol etc. its' own track, so you can mix it separately to get better overall drum sound.
If I'm using Session Drummer 2, and step sequencer, can I route separate drums to their own channel?
I  have Sonar 8.5 Studio and haven't been able to find anything in Help or manual.

Yes, you can route each instrument to separate outputs or any combination of outputs. Go to the mixer view and you'll see a "1" above the Mute/Solo buttons. Drag this field up and down to select a different output for that channel. Then create new audio tracks to receive each of the new outputs you're using. I'm not sure how many outputs Session Drummer 2 has, I think it was up to 8 outs.

    EDIT:
I thought Session Drummer was only in Producer, not in Studio. I may be wrong about that, but it would explain why there is no help file for it.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Sonar Studio Edition includes Session Drummer 2, but not Session Drummer 3.

With the Session Drummer 2 window open in Sonar, click once anywhere inside the Session Drummer interface and then press F1 on your PC keyboard. That should open the Session Drummer help file.

    1. You the insert soft synth from the synth rack or from the insert menu and select Session Drummer 2.
    2. When the property page opens, select multiple mono or stereo outs and check the MIDI source box and track folder box. Hit ok
    3. Then go into the Session Drummers mixer section and at the bottom of each drum fader, you will see channels. change each channel from 1 to 10. The kick is 1, then snare is 2, the Hi-Hat is 3 and so on.
    4. Now insert a MIDI clip into the MIDI track by drag and dropping the Note (treble clef) or by recording midi or by the loop explorer.
    5. Done

CJ, I was able to do all this. Got my tracks to show up. But can't get sound. Meters are going, but nothing in phones. When I go back to Sess. D2, and click on drums, they play sound. But not in track.

Is there something in that first properties page wrong maybe? I clicked the boxes you said to. I also let it route ins/outs, like I ususally do.

    Thanks.

Saw your blog on outputs and went to your site to hear your music. What did you use for the drums? I have a song, 'Pattycakes' I'll upload but check out 'Tanglewood Funk' and 'A Short Term Love Affair'.http://www.myspace.com/herringboneallstars

I wonder can i hijack this thread and ask after I have routed all the buses of SD2 to their own channel, how do I bounce all those individual tracks to separate audio tracks for further manipulation?

What I'm trying to do at the moment is basically I would like the hihat in a song to be tighter on the verses of the song (tune it down) so I need to swap that with the already full sounding one?

    Hi Cian

You don't NEED to bounce your drum tracks down in order to apply further processing to them, assuming of course you have them individually routed to separate audio tracks inside Sonar.

If this is the case, then all you need to do is insert the plugins of your choice into the Fx bin of the drum track you're working on.
Where you might need to bounce down is when you have more going on inside your project than your computer can handle.
Bouncing down (or freezing the synth, which in my opinion is a MUCH better way to go) frees up resources.
