Serendipity (NEW) ...vox though Soundblaster card!
I had 1 project that wasn't corrupted and had all the tracks intact. Back from 2003. At the time I had a soundblaster card and was using a 4 channel Peavy mixing board for a mic pre. I decided to take another stab at it, but I kept the vocals and recorded a new guitar track and bass line. Nothing else on it yet, but wanted to test the waters for some feedback on it. The girls singing are twins; good friends of my wife I talked into tracking a few tunes. http://soundcloud.com/ron-vogel/serendipity

I love the simple arrangement of this piece. It highlights the nice guitar work and vocals very well. Good lyrics need to be heard, and you succeeded nicely. This has a lot of potential as far as adding additional instruments. Just be careful not to lose the vibe you already have. Make sure to repost this if you make changes. Good job so far.

I will bet if you did not mention that the vox were done on a SB nobody would have noticed. Nobody. Just goes to prove IMO that there is nothing at all wrong with using an SB card. I keep going back to this, which for me is rare. Great tune. Shared it on my FB page too.

Thanks! and I agree, the SB card worked for me at the time. Latency was the only drawback to it...but if you have a plan for the arrangement, it's easy to do the live instruments first before bogging a project down with soft synths. Had a 3 day weekend to get my MIDI working again to no avail. Been non-working since January. Got maybe 10 hours of sleep for the whole weekend with nothing to show for it! I'm selling my USB keyboard, and buying a controller with true midi outs, and a breakout box for the computer....maybe I can start some new projects then!

I feel for you. There are times when all this stuff can make you want to pull your hair out. I will confess I am starting to feel the need to move away from USB myself. The really interesting equipment is not using USB and, actually, the new ultra fast, ultra low latency technology is based on networking protocols. I am not sure I can wrap my mind around the new tech though... seems you need a degree in IT to be a musician these days.

very nice Ron - definitely persevere with it when you can but as someone else said here, don't lose this original vibe - it's quite haunting

I just got MIDI working last night...it was my keyboard. I borrowed a cheapie Yamaha keyboard from my sister in-law yesterday, plugged in the usb, and it worked with no fuss. Now I have to find the video card driver that works best with the current bios that's working well to get my latency down. It's hard to believe all this time I spent over the past few months boiled down to just my controller not plying well with others!

Nice tune. I like the guitars and bass. Almost sounds like a chapman stick. I hear a little something Peculiar in the femail vocals at the begining when they are by themselves. Almost sounds like wind in the mic. Perhaps a low cut or highpass will cut some of that out of the vocals. I realize you may not be able to re-record the femail vocals just thougt I would offer a suggestion. Other than that small niggle I think you are heading in the right direction for this tune. Good job.

Yeah, I had an AKG C4000B mic at the time. It's a pretty bright mic, and emphsizes breathy vox very well. I kind of wish I still had it. I was just learning mic set-up, so it does pick up a lot of wind noise. It also distorts quite a bit on loud vocals, so you can hear that during the yelling parts. One of the reasons I got rid of it. Hard to get a natural vocal sound during loud passages...and vocal correction makes it sound overly synthetic. I really appreciate the feeback. The "haunting" feel noted really helps me take the percussion in that direction. I'm thinking of a mix of live and midi drums to get a "King of pain" type vibe...probably something minimalist. I toyed around with kick/snare last night; following the kick to the bass just made the arrangement fall apart and turn to mud. I think something more minimalist is going to be the key.

This is really nice, Ron. I'm glad you were singing along with those twins too (and they add a lot!) Love the playing. Bass is cool. Great song. You could probably sing into a cardboard tube and sound great. :)
