Serious Crash last night *UPDATE*
Last night, the machine was switched on with Sonar X2 the only running application. I wasn’t working on a project at the time, the pc was just idling when it suddenly & without warning flashed up a Blue Screen Of Death – but it wasn’t a normal BSOD – all of the graphics were extremely distorted making it impossible to read the BSOD texts. I left it for about 30 minutes before shutting the machine down. I left it for a while, switched it back on, and even when loading the BIOS the graphics were still distorted. Windows tried to launch, but it then went into a self-diagnostic routine at the end of which I could just make out the message that stated “Windows cannot repair this computer automatically” The machine is still under warranty and I'm waiting for them to get back to me, but it seems to me that as a minimum, the graphics cards has gone kaput, my worry is, what else did it drag down with it. Anyone seen anything like this before? A truly pissed off Jonesey

As you have an i7 CPU, are you using the internal Intel HD4000 graphics or a separate video card? I had a problem with my new i7 3770 CPU, the DVI graphics output died. The VGA still worked as I had an older monitor that was VGA and able to troubleshoot. I eventually installed a separate video card. However, I've had crashes that along with whatever happened to cause the PC crash also corrupt the hard drive. Luckily scandisk fixed the hard drive problems, otherwise I would have had to rebuild the hard drive from my Acronis backup.

Thanks for replying I'm using a separate video card but it's quite an old one as my monitors aren't HDMI or DVI-D or anything like that.

I have seen that a few times and each time resulted in a new video card. I once got a few more months out of one by removing the HS/fan and resetting with arctic silver but the problem came back. If you're using a fancy accelerated screen saver, those are video card killers IMO. Hope you get it sorted.

Thanks Grant. No screensavers here - just a fancy X2 wallpaper! I've been in touch with the people who built the system, and it looks like I'm going to have to box it up and get it sent back to them for repair. Glad I backed up all my projects on Saturday (I've not done a lot since then)

If your i7 CPU has built in video, remove the video card and use the built in video (if your motherboard has a VGA connector). That will tell you if the problem was the video card or something else.

@Jack - I'll have a go with that - thanks for the tip @Charlie - yep, this machine has been nothing but trouble since day 1. I said in another thread that this will be the last pc I ever buy from this particular vendor. Their quality control has down downhill a lot since 2007. I'll build my own in future.

As far as the data, I think you will be OK, once the old card and driver are gone. Chances are if you boot up in safe mode and uninstall the video card driver, you will have access to your data but the screen may be a lower resolution and no HW acceleration.

Well, it's all boxed up & ready to be picked up on Monday. I fired up my old XP32 box, just to have a look, and there is no way on this earth I could ever revert to 32 bit or XP! There were a few old plugs i wanted the dlls for, so I copied those across to my External. So I now have a quad core Q6700 with 4Gb of RAM doing nothing. Think I'll wipe it, re-install Windows and see if anyone round here wants a pretty good machine by way of introduction into home recording.

Update - computer has been fitted with a new graphics card, stress tested, and is awaiting collection from my wife's office. They also fitted my hard drives with silencers. Can't wait to get it home!

can your psu take the strain, is another area you might need to look into.. I mean did you add anything more to drain a bit more power? iffy drivers etc etc. eliminate anything you updated recently also. sure you will sort it.. but I have a c64 here.. 30 year old.. and never an issue .. decent sound chip in it also ;-)

Hi Paul. This was a new build last year, built by an audio specialist company who I've used before. Strangely enough, since I took delivery of this machine, they have had to replace: All the memory Graphics card PSU And only now have they finally installed hard rive silencers. The machine seems to be running perfectly again, but this was the case 3 weeks ago when it just died without warning.
