Seriously, will instructions for X1's Soundcloud upload start with "connect to internet"?

I'm just wondering... cause if I'm gonna connect my DAW to the internet... maybe I can start collaborating with Jonny and Bapsi in real time too.

Seriously... What's the best Antivirus/Anti Spyware to use with a state of the art DAW?

all the best,
mike

I use Zonealarm which I only switch on when connected. Once a week to collect the Windows updates, which I do just after backup. Paranoid? Moi?

My company (>2000) recently switched from McAfee to Microsoft Forefront.   McAfee really did seem to use an excessive amount of resources, all things considered...

thing is a combo of 2 things, a software + hardware firewall (normally you can get it on a router) and a decent AV. the main market leaders, because of that are sadly the most often attacked (inc. the free ones)

you don't HAVE to connect your DAW to the net 24-7.  pen drive to MP3 etc.. then to net machine.

Merely connecting a DAW to the internet doesn't pose any problems. The problems are opening emails, or downloaded attachments or visiting sites that would pose risks. I've had my DAW connected to the internet for years and never had one single problem. All I use it for is updating drivers and authorizing plugins from reputed manufacturers and once in awhile for a quick Google search.

You can also run Security Essentials and the occasional Malwarebytes scan for added security and piece of mind (which I do).

+1

I have never used anti virus, and am always connected to the internet. I just connect through a router, I use web based email (doesn't download to my machine), configure my browser securely, and use the internet carefully (not difficult). A very occasional scan with SpybotSD. No issues in many years with my DAW tower and its various builds.

I think I got a virus on my laptop two years back from being stupid on the internet and clicking too fast on some popup to close it.

Now my work comnputers, which use active anti virus, seem to get viruses all the time ironically.

All our daws are standalone, but as this is a gaming facility we use either portable HDs or memory sticks to transfer files to the server.... we move files across some 39 countries and have manufacturing facilities in a few different places... (most recently we built a factory in Nevada)... so files are usually transferred via ftp.

Our workstations that are online have some form of McAfee AV that our IT dept monitors...

In my home studio I use Vipre which has been excellent, has a very small footprint and is unobtrusive. Again my home DAW is standalone, but I have a dedicated gaming rig (desktop) and a laptop for email, steam, driver updates etc.

But I am old school and cautious... I treat my music workstations as dedicated studio beasts. If I need to go online, there are other inexpensive options available to me... :)

I use the release catch on an ethernet cable.  Works as well as just say no, tho I have to admit I'm not a teenager anymore.

And Mike, just don't cruise those new .xxx sites.

I've been using a McAffee product on a subscription since pretty much the turn of the century.

Along with common sense policy, this combination has kept me clean for a decade.

Everyone will cite their particular favourites or horror stories about various software products to the extent I'm not sure the answers to these kinds of questions have any meaning.

The sense of caution that raises the question is probably where the best answers lie.

Aye. In much the same way I never go anywhere that requires body armour, I also avoid the more diseased bits of the internet. Works fine for me.

+1 with Brandon. No antivirus for about half and 1 year and no problem if you take care about few things as Brandon wrote.

Re:Seriously, will instructions for X1's Soundcloud upload start with "connect to internet 2011/09/16 10:46:26 (permalink)
I'm with Brandon.

Martin Walker wrote an article about connecting your DAW to the net, Virus checkers and LAns etc and concluded that with today's processors there should not be any resource issues with these activities running on your DAW.

Of course you wouldn't run a virus scan while you're recording nor would you be surfing the web while tracking your biggest artist or trying to get that once in a lifetime take. But the mere act of connecting to the net or having virus software installed isn't the issue.

Much of the information touted today is left over from the days when processors and memory were utilized to the max all the time. Today that's no longer the case. Of course common sense not being so common folks will still do things like not make regular backups, surf the net without firewall and virus checkers installed.
Me I've surfed the net since it could be done and never had a virus infection. I've found scores of viruses though, hidden in all sorts of things from emails to compressed zip files and graphics images. I've always had Anti Virus software of one sort or another and caught scores of viruses before they could do any harm.

On my secondary DAW (Laptop) I have McAfee Anti Virus Plus because I use the laptop for general work as well as live work. I run 2 different users with different preferences one as a DAW and the other as a general PC.
In the studio I don't run any antivirus software on my Primary DAW at all because I don't receive any emails on it and any internet activity is only for updating currently installed programs or downloading a newly purchased program. Even then I scan the download folder on any PC on my network anytime I have new downloads in there just to be sure. I've found viruses in downloads from some pretty reputable downloads.

All my computers are on a network and sit behind a hardware router and firewall. This arrangement or its variations have served me well for a long time.
