Service Center update problems

Hi All I'm running Win 7 64bit Cakewalk Platinum with the latest updates.
I first installed Komplete 10 from Disks then upgraded to Komplete 10 Ultimate from external HD.
What happens when I go to update program-(s) within the Service Center it will download the update that's fine, It's when I go to install the update it starts and goes through all the steps to update the program and just before its done I get a error message that the update can't find a valid program (missing the .msi) it stops the update and instructs me to re-install the original program. The Service Center then removes the program from my computer. This has happened with Absynth, Kontakt, FM8 and Komplete Kontrol. I'm afraid to do any updates as it's a major issue re-installing the programs. Any Ideas???

This has been moved from the SONAR forum as it would appear to be more of a software issue than a SONAR issue.

This comes up about once a month. Never, instal from Service Center. Close it and install from the folders on your desktop. There is no way to reverse it. If you installed the sample libraries to a seperate hard drive you should only instal programs. You won't needti install libraries again.

A good thing to do is tell the Service Center WHERE to download them to and not
to delete the downloads.  Then, when you go the folder, run the downloads as "Administrator"
by right clicking on the file and select "Run as Administrator".  This will ensure no
issues on install...

The service center has in many cases been known to delete plugins instead of updating them. It's an absolute bug filled piece of crap.

Sorry for posting to the wrong forum but I did get some good feed back thanks. Some of these options I've tried like not using the service center to install. Still the same problems. I guess I'll give NI the issue, sorry again for posting here I guess I was just pissed and I just run a muck posting.
Thanks Everyone

Re: Service Center update problems 2016/02/25 00:08:49 (permalink)
I just downloaded the latest NI updates and it did not know my default VST install locations, in fact "VST" wasn't even selected in the installer. So I suspect this is probably at least partially responsible for why the automatic Service Center install feature screws things up so badly. For the life of me I don't know why the Service Center doesn't let you edit your default install locations - all you can do is select the installer download location.

When I ran the first installer of the updates, it had both my 32-bit and 64-bit locations wrong, so I corrected both. Then when I ran the next installer, it got the 32-bit location right but still had the wrong 64-bit location. It wasn't until the third installer that both install locations were set correctly.

Thanks for this. I was really confused. SC was set to download to C:\Programs\Native Instruments. I changed it to Downloads\Native Instruments (a folder I created in Downloads). I will install from there. I got things so messed up I had to completely re-install K10u. That is done and I am downloading the Absynth update now and will see it through before doing any more. What a mess but I suppose it will be worth it. Thanks, I searched NI updates and found this thread.

I also had some issues switching from Komplete 10 to Komplete 10 Ultimate.
From what I recall I ended up uninstalling all of Komplete 10 then reinstalling Ultimate.
I probably could've tried to resolve the various issues individually but it seemed to be the least painful solution going forward.  Granted you've got to install all that material again but the other issues (upgrading K10 plugin errors, etc.) evaporated and you're not going to get a surprise down the line when a new update appears.
Aside from this the only issue I had with the Service Center was the old K3 plugins FM7, B42, etc staying activated.

In general I've found the best way to avoid or at least minimize issues with any VST installer is to
  • Excluding VST3s - never assume that any installer system knows where your VST plugins are located.
  • If possible specify separate locations for 32 and 64 plugins versions.
Some companies use the same file name for both,
some installers will have problems or lock up if you specify the same folder for both.
  • Disable options to 'Delete files after successful install'
Installers sometimes don't correctly interpret installation failures or you may need to reinstall at some point.

Best regards,
...Steven

OH... I just remembered, I need to make sure I have Rounds and something else... better go look.
Glad it worked for you. Some things are trial and error. I guess if you get every plugin ever made (like some people), you get pretty good at this sort of thing... IDK.
