Services to help reach more people

I know this is probably the golden goose here haha, but just to get this out of the way up front, I'm specifically talking about PAID services. Not just free.

With the kind of music I do, I can't play shows, and playing live seems like the #1 best way to get new listeners. But that's out of the question. I do other things to get myself out in public (I get my music videos into film festivals, and I create interactive video experiences that I show off at events). But those are much more spread out throughout the year than a traditional band doing shows would be.

So online is mainly it for me, and just having music on Reverbnation/Soundcloud/etc and and promoting it on Facebook/Twitter/Google+/forums/etc just doesn't cut it. The average new track or video I put up gets in the hundreds of plays, and I'd like it to be getting in the thousands of plays or more. I'm certainty not going to stop doing the traditional social media avenues of promotion, but I'd like to get some help.

Which brings me to the question: what if any paid services do any of you guys use to promote your music? I do google and facebook ads sometimes, and that's pretty good, but I'd love to find something more specific to music. Unfortunately, everything I find is always some scammy attempt to trick rap artists into getting their music heard by the "hottest A&Rs from Sony Music" or some nonsense like that haha. I don't make rap (at least not the stuff I'm trying to promote haha), so getting my music heard on "blogs that feature the most fire mixtapes around" doesn't really appeal to me.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks

Given the number of musicians in your situation (millions) and the number who will reach the audience size to which you aspire (a few tens of thousands) it should be clear that there is far more likelihood that someone can make a good living selling promotion than making music. Of those selling promotion, a few are going to be able to spend enough time to evaluate your work and have access to people who can actually make your music a success. They will have to be paid a lot by someone, and if it is not a music company, then it will be a very well healed (independently wealthy or already successful) musician or some truly committed agent. The rest will make their money either by outright scamming you or by some sort of digital spamming technique that is as unlikely to work as junk email. If your voice is lost amid the enormously crowded and confusing babel of Soundcloud, is it all that more likely that it will be heard among the babel of "affordable" promotion services? Buying more lottery tickets improves your odds, but it is a very expensive proposition to buy enough to ensure that you will win.

All good points. But I'd be willing to bet you could narrow those millions down to thousands (or at least tens of thousands) who are willing to pay to promote themselves. And then narrow it down further to people looking to promote specifically within their genre.

Plus, all the googling in the world and all I can find is promotions for rappers. Haha. Point me to one that's not specifically for rappers, even if its one that is a scam or doesn't specifically work for me and my music, and I'd consider this post a success haha.

Have you tried taking out a paid Facebook or Twitter ad? People might actually appreciate the novelty of having a sponsored music video instead of the usual ad crap that appears on their timelines. I sometimes take out Facebook ads for my business. You have to take care to get the targeting & presentation right, but for $20 you can have upwards of 10,000 people see your ad.

    Hey Sharke,

Yes, I have done Facebook promoted posts and ads (specifically when I have a new music video come out). They've actually been the most successful thing I've done so far as far as paying to promote my music. I just don't want everything to be about Facebook, you know what I mean? I was thinking about trying a Twitter ad/promoted tweet, but when I saw the estimated reach, it was kind of ridiculously low. Like basically a $1 per view estimate. Just didn't seem worth it. FB can be pretty random with the results, but for the most part, it's WAY better than that.

As an experiment, I'm going to try a significant amount with my next video that I'm finishing up in the next couple weeks. Normally I just do like 10 bucks or so at a time, but I'm gonna try probably like $100 and see what happens. It's a really cool video so I might as well :-) haha
