Session Drummer 2

Hey guys,

I was wondering what happened to Session Drummer 2 in Sonar Home Studio XL? I was considering t rying to upgrade at s ome point in the future and was looking forward to seeing how that was and how people liked using it, but I didn't see it in Sonar Home Studio XL anymore....

They replace it with something worse, comparable or better?

I noticed session drummer 2 was in Sonar Producer though...

The replaced it with Studio Instruments. There's a drum program similar to SD2 in there, but I've never used it. Bob has, he'll probably pop in and have something to say about it.

The drum plug-in, that comes with Studio Instruments is NO comparison to SD2.
Unlike SD2 which allows you to load your own samples, the Studio drum plug only comes with a single drum kit and no means to add anything more.

It's the equivalent of using an old rom based drum machine that only has a handful of sounds.
The interesting thing is... it's a SFZ based player that for some cynical reason; CW made it closed ended where you can't play any other SFZ or samples with this plug. Even the drum samples are encoded with a special codec or opcode that will only work with the player.

In fact... all of the Studio Instrument plugs are the same way! Each plug only has one set of samples. I un-installed these plugs, because I found them to be a step back to the days when drum machines or keyboards could not be updated with fresh sounds. I find the imposed
limitations disappointing considering that a lot of freeware does far more!

Well, I'm a wee bit more fond of Studio Instruments than Kine.
However, I do agree completely that the SI Drums are a step down from Session Drummer 2.
SD2 is much more flexible, and has better controllability and performance. There are some third party add-ons for kits and patterns for SD2.
SHS7 has taken an interesting direction, and the focus is more on ease of use than previous versions.
I can only second guess marketing, but I suspect that may have had something to do with the inclusion of SI with the package.
    SD2 is available seperately, though.
And there's always EZ Dummer and others.
This is probably our cue for the Jamstix plug.

I just looked at it in the CW store and at first I thought it was free, since there was no 'Buy Now' page, but that comes after the 'download now' page. $79. This was at the bottom: NOTE: Session Drummer 2 is included in SONAR 7 Studio & Producer Edition, and SONAR Home Studio 6 XL.

So get your SHS6XL today! Somewhere.
I used the SD2 drums for my jazz piece.

I'm certain by his statement, "No longer available in the XL version" is based on an interest in the new SHS7XL version? It doesn't seem logical to get #6 just for a single plugin, when it's now the older version. It's kinda like purchasing MC3 when MC4 is newer and better.

IMO, SD2 is not worth $79. If you're going to spend that much money on it, then buy EZ Drummer. It's a LOT better than SD2.

JS plug time, for $99 you get the best drum software on the planet, either that or EZ drummer very close behind it, and you are back in the hunt. Nice feature to JS is to demo the dawg and see how it works, there are plenty o' folks here that can help you learn it. Herbie is the resident JS guru, and has a great tutorial on his website.

Question about EZ Drummer: does it have a large selection of canned rhythms in different genres with fills that can be cut and pasted to form a song? I don't want to create beats from scratch; I prefer to start with say, a country beat, then be able to select from a few different versions/fills, etc.

I've been using PC Drummer which has a library of patterns. I like the program itself but the library hasn't been added to in years.

I have that program too, and it is nice but limited. I do believ you can import samples to it some how.

EZ Drummer is a pattern based drop and drag type program, it has very good samples in it.

Js can do much the same, it has the added feature of being able to just jam with a song by style.

You can tell it to start with a entry measure, the tell it how many measures of each stype you want like two measures of rock pattern, one fill, then three bars of this and so forth. Both JS and EZ Drmmuer will work well for you.

SD2 has a "decent" amount of patterns, but it's by no means "large." I believe EZD has MANY more patterns than SD2.

    Big +1 for EZ Drummer

It only takes seconds to find the basic beat and customise it and editing in fills or customising in the PRV is a piece of Cake(walk)

And as Beagle says, there are thousands of patterns to work with.

I found SD2 OK, but EZD is much better, for me at least, in all departments.

same here. SD2 was one of the reasons I upgraded to Sonar, but after I got it I was kind of disappointed with it. after I got EZD I haven't loaded SD2 again!
