Session Drummer 3 - How to actually RECORD?
Every tutorial I have watched/read tells me perfectly how to route each drum to its own track - this I can do. But how do you actually get it to RECORD to each track?? When I hit record and play drums on my controller, all that records is the 'source track' and not the individual tracks I set up. Why don't the tutorials tell me this?? It must be something so simple and yet I can't work it out. Anyone?

All the MIDI is recorded on one track as default. It's the audio outputs that are separate tracks. It would be tricky to edit a MIDI drum fill is every hit is on separate track. There are ways to split every MIDI note to separate tracks, though, but I've never tried 'cause can't see any reason to do so. Then you can put audio FX on the individual kitpieces on the audio output tracks, or send them to a bus or whatever, and, if necessary, then freeze/bounce everything to audio. Or did I misunderstand your question?

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Good point about the 'editing a drum fill' bit. That helps my understanding. So why doesn't it print audio into the individual tracks? So, say I've recorded a MIDI drum part onto the source track...how do I then get printed audio of each drum part onto each individual track? I don't understand the point of separating each track if I can't do that?? Cheers Dave

The quickest and easiest way to do that is to freeze the synth. This will record audio onto however many audio tracks you've specified within the synth. Once frozen, you can treat the audio like any other audio track. I'd advise you to un-check the "FX" freeze option so that you can add or alter effects after the freeze.

I have Sonar X1 Producer and when I load soft synth Session Drummer it loads Session Drummer 1. How do I get Session Drummer 3 to load - if it even matters? Now this is the rub. I loaded a wave file on track 1 of a new song. I inserted Session Drummer onto track 2. Now right out of the slot before I have even recorded anything with SD, each time I hit play it plays a snare drum roll Bb2 - the same as if I were hitting that note on my keyboard. It doesn't even matter where I am at in the song or what measure I am on it will always trigger this note/sound. I looked in the Event Editor and it does not show anything listed except for the wave file on track 1. What I am puzzled by is what is triggering this Bb2 note? Has anyone seen something like this or know how I can get it to stop? Dave W.

If you have more than one version of Session Drummer installed, they'll all be listed as available synths, just with slightly different names. SD1 will show up as just "Session Drummer", and S3 will be listed as "Session Drummer 3". You're just selecting the wrong one by (reasonably) picking "Session Drummer" off the list. Your description of the other problem confounds me. By "Event Editor" do you mean the "Event List"? That doesn't show audio events, just MIDI. Maybe a screenshot would help.

Thanks bitflipper for the reply. For whatever reason I must not have more than one Session Drummer installed because that is the only one showing up on the list when I look back on it. I'm not sure how I would go about getting Session Drummer 3 to load. Would I have to go back through my install process again? Since I do not even have disks anymore because of upgrading through Cakewalk website I'm not sure what to do there. Maybe I'll have to contact customer support to help me. Yes I did mean event list as opposed to my incorrect listing of event editor. What I was pointing out is that there were no midi events listed to possibly trigger this and that track 1 only showed that there was an audio track on it. Yes I am extremely puzzled as to what is triggering the Session Drummer to play. I just thought maybe someone else had experienced this particular problem and had some insight for me. How would a screenshot help and how would I go about taking that? Thanks again for responding. Dave W.

FWIW in X series SONAR Producer, Session Drummer 3 is listed as "Session Drummer" in the browser and synth menu. The Session Drummer 3 UI shows "Session Drummer 3" in the upper left hand side of the drumkit view. Unless you own a very old version of SONAR, you would not have the original Session Drummer which is a completely different tool. To your question of how to install individual plug-ins from a download version of SONAR, you need to download the installer files and run the advanced install option. The advanced install permits installation of individual components. It is probably unnecessary if you see "Session Drummer" in your synth list, you already have Session Drummer 3 installed. To your previous post, one way SD3 will play without any apparent input is if the play transport button in on in the SD3 transport UI when SONAR is playing.

Thanks scook for the prompt assistance you have been so kind as to help me with. Indeed now - at your instructions - I see on the Drumkit itself the logo Session Drummer 3 although in the drop down list it only lists Session Drummer. I'm not sure how the play button could have gotten turned on but that seems to have solved the problem. I am so new to Session Drummer that I did not even realize that this button was there. Thanks for the suggestion and solution - much appreciated. Dave W.

""" Since I do not even have disks anymore because of upgrading through Cakewalk website I'm not sure what to do there. """ So what are you gonna do when the computer crashes and you have to start over ???? The rule: never, never, never, never trash the disks. I have ALL of the CW/Sonar disks, plus copies, and images on hard disk. I often use VSampler. Need Sonar 6 to install the included libraries.

jm24, I have not had original Cakewalk Discs since Sonar 9. I have been upgrading through the Cakewalk site and downloading the upgrade files. It's not near as handy as having the good ole disk to pop in but in the case of a computer crash I guess I could re-download it from the Cakewalk web site. It's just not easy to re-download just a portion or two that way - if you get my drift. I have backups of my current Sonar X1 Producer program but they are mostly RAR compressed files which would require re-doing the whole program instead of just maybe the Session Drummer. Thanks for your sound advice.

If you wish, it is possible to create a set of install disks from the downloads. To do so requires unpacking the RAR archives with a tool like 7-zip. Create a disk for each of the file groups 02 through 05. Fortunately performing an advanced install was not necessary for the issues in this thread. It is not that bad doing an advanced install from the download files, it would have to expand the 02 set completely before asking about the install type though.

I have also only downloaded the most recent versions. I have disks of all the software. And I have folders on backup drives with all versions expanded and ready for installation. This means I can quickly install any of the included programs, plugins,... from any version.

scook - thanks for the unpacking expertise. jm24 it is great to know that you also have downloaded and have been able to make backup disks of your downloads without having to pay additional monies. thanks to all for their input. it is great to know that there are kind people willing to lend assistance.
