Session Drummer 3 help
I recently bought X1 Producer and am new to MIDI. I know my question is dumb, but I need help. I have a Yamaha keyboard that has MIDI, but I don't know how to use it to trigger the drums in SD3. I lwatched a couple of Sonar videos on youtube, but they didn't tell me what I need to know. Can anyone help me or direct me where I can find help?

Hi, have you used your midi keyboard succesfully with other plugins, or is this a general question about setting up your keyboard rather than one about SD3? If it's about SD3, you can identify which notes on your keyboard trigger which drums by right clicking on the gui on each drum and it'll tell you which note is associated with those drum samples. Also, if you go to the piano roll view you get a list down the left of each drum. A further way is to start the step view for SD3 to get a view of notes for each drum. If you need general info about setting up your keyboard, I think it's best to have a go at following the manual until you get stuck, then come back here with a specific question. Simon

Also do a search on Yamaha keyboards. Some have a problem with MIDI and Sonar. It's solvable but there can be an initial problem.

greg54 Thanks, Simon. I've never used MIDI before. I need to learn EVERYTHING. :) I'll do a web search for more info. Greg Hi Greg- You might want to start with the SONAR reference materials on setting up MIDI, etc., rather than a wider web search first. That could lead you down a very long winding road! How are you connecting your keyboard, for example? Give us some idea of where you are now. -Susan

Page 61 of the reference guide will get you started in connecting hardware. What model of Yamaha keyboard do you have?

Thanks for all the replys! I have an old Yamaha PRS550 keyboard. It only has a MIDI In/Out. Perhaps a new controller that hooks up via USB might be better? I will check out Sonar's reference guide. Thanks!

All you need is MIDI. Stick it out with your current keyboard till you've exhausted all possibilities. If you have a manual you'll find a setting called LOCAL ON/OFF. If it's set to on it will trigger your Keyboard's sounds. Set to OFF will trigger a soft synth in Sonar and disable the keyboard's sounds. Local Control Page 116 of users manual

1.) Make sure the MIDI In on the Keyboard is connected to the MIDI Out of your interface...and that the MIDI Out on the keyboard is connected to the MIDI In of your interface. 2.) check the manual (if you have it) for the keyboard to see what MIDI channel the keyboard is set to send on. (My Yamaha P-250 for example by default is set to MIDI Out = 1) Then check the keyboard to see what MIDI channel is set to recieve on (My Yamaha P-250 for example by default is set to MIDI In = Off) Now in Sonar Insert a MIDI Track and an Audio Track In the Audio Track insert for example Session Drummer 3 soft synth In the MIDI Track Set it's In to what ever the Piano Out was set to. Set it's Out to the Audio Track from Above. When you now play from your keyboard do you get drum sounds?? It's been so long since I thought about the details I am probably forgetting a couple. So consult the help file or the SONAR_X1_Reference_Guide that is available from this site. Hope This Helps
