Session Drummer Not Playing
Greetings! I am having trouble getting the Session Drummer to play. I am using SHS 6 on a new HP laptop, and I'm wondering if I need to change some of the settings on the computer to get it to play. It does load in okay, but after I start the Session Drummer, pick the program I want to run, and then press Play, nothing happens. I'd appreciate any help on this, or let me know if I need to provide you guys with more info. Thanks!

Do you have a MIDI track with data in it pointed to SD?

Sorry, but you'll really have to dumb this down for me....I barely know how this stuff works. If your talking about selecting a MIDI track in the Session Drummer, is that in the area directly below where you select which Program you want to use (like 'D n B Groovy 4s')? Also what is SD?

SD=Session Drummer. Okay. All software synthesizers require MIDI data (notes) in a MIDI track in order to hear anything. Session Drummer is a soft synth. Once notes are in a MIDI track, you insert a soft synth and change the MIDI track's output to the soft synth. The MIDI track is not in SD, it's in SHS. Are you using SD in standalone mode? Or opening SHS and inserting SD into it?

I'm opening SHS and inserting SD into it, I guess. When I opened up SHS on my old laptop, after creating a new project, creating a new track, then when I wanted to add something from SD, I would choose it from the Insert tab, selecting it from the Soft Synth drop-down, then select SD. Then, after I selected a drum program, and it would load in, then, I would just press Play and it worked. Now, on this new laptop, it loads in the same way, but it just doesn't play. That's why I was wondering if maybe one of my MIDI settings on this laptop might not be on the same settings as my old laptop.

I am running 64 bit OS, and my SHS shows 6(x64). Hope that answers your questions. How would I check to make sure the drum samples are loaded? I assume they are, because when I select a specific program (ie Hard Rock Room) it shows that it loads in. Everything seems to be loading in fine, just like on my old computer, except now, when I press Play, there's no response. I can still select the different patterns (A, B, C, etc.) and they light up as if selected, but then when the Play button is pressed....nothing.

Are the drum icons bright or dull? If there are samples loaded, the icons will be brighter. I played around with my SD 2 awhile ago and if there are no samples loded, it won't play anything. Plus, on advice from another member who has the same program as you and me, I loaded the 32-bit version on my new Win 7 64-bit computer so all the plug-ins will work.

Okay, here is a screenshot of the program, I hope this helps. The icons are lit up, and when I click on them, they act like they are activated, but just no sound is coming out. I also put parenthesis around the play button I'm talking about...

It is a fact that some of the plug-ins won't work on a 64-bit platform. I would suggest removing the program and reloading the 32-bit version. Once loaded, right-click the SONAR icon and set it to run in 32-bit compatibility mode and to run as Administrator. Do the same for the executable file in Windows Explorer. See if that works. We have the same OS and the same program. It worked for me.

Well, I uninstalled the program and re-installed in in 32-bit mode. It didn't change a thing. Here's one other thing I'll mention...when I had to reinstall it, I realized it did not load in the Session Drummer file. I had to manually load it in. I seem to remember way back when, when I bought this version of SHS, that it did not include SD, and that I got it somehow as a separate software - maybe a download from the site, I really can't remember. Would that have anything to do with it?

manually loading it in would probably not work right. you need to install it. there should be an installer with the download you purchased.

I'm guessing the installer that came with the program is long gone, plus it would be on the old computer, anyway. I'm thinking my next step is just to purchase SD again. They have it on sale in the Cakewalk store for $9.99. I'm just hoping the new version will work with my old SHS 6 version.

If you downloaded SD2 in the first place, log into your account at the store. You should find an active link to download it again, if need be, at no extra charge. As noted, if you didn't use the install routine, there is a fair chance something is missing. And as kev mentioned, check your other synths. Is everything else working ok?
