have you changed the base octave in preferences? thats the first thing I can think of.  you could also look in track templates and load one in, see how you get on..

When you open the step seq,r from within session drummers pane does the drum manger auto populate? (if so mine is not) Also I dont see where to change the bass octave in pref (please advice).

    Thank you in advance.

Check on you controller for the octave.

Also, use the plus keys to add more notes.

if you haven't changed the base octave.. then don't worry about it (it's in options)

    do the following..

    insert
    soft synth

    session drummer 3

you should get a page up asking what outputs you want etc.. if not, you probably need to re-enable the option page..

if you go into Step, it'll show the drum names

I'm not sure I'm quite following your question. Perhaps you could rephrase it but I'll take a crack at it anyway. Right click on the left pane of the Step Sequencer where the kit pieces are listed. In the dropdown click Insert Kit Piece. Keep doing that until all the kit pieces you want to use are listed. You can also remove unwanted kit pieces in that menu as well. To map the kit pieces to your pad controller there are multiple ways. If it is ACT ready you can just press the ACT button at the top right of the Session Drummer GUI and it should map automatically. If it isn't ACT ready you should read the section on ACT functions and mapping MIDI devices in the tutorials section. You can also use the controller itself to map the notes to Sonar using the onboard controls and/or editor librarian software. What controller are you using?

Oh yeah and make sure your MIDI device is actually being recognized by Sonar. Go to Edit > Preferences > MIDI Devices and you should see your device listed. If it is not listed it is not installed correctly so visit your manufacturers website for up to date drivers and installation instructions. If it IS listed make sure it is selected/enabled (there will be checkmarks beside the devices name in both the inoput and output sections). Good luck.

Thank you guys, Im having the worst time with this drum map thing (this is the first and only issue Ive had with X1 so far...)

I will try my controllers octave buttons when I get home, dont think its that tho, cause when I added more rows it was just more note names (no kit piec names from SD3). @Fog
ps(@Fog): "you should get a page up asking what outputs you want etc.. if not, you probably need to re-enable the option page..
if you go into Step, it'll show the drum names"

Thats what my issue is, (I will re-enable the opt page). But when I open Step seq (from SD3 pane) none of the names are mapped; its just note names there. and I cant change the names either (right clkn in the name field does nothing).

@beepster: Thank you so much for being detailed, but I got that far. My controller is linked and works. (sometimes sonar loses it, but if I turn the controller off and back on it links up again, so no worries)
Its SD3 talking to the step seq,er that Im having the issues with.

pps: Is the step seq'r auto load and populate names when you open it from within any of the standard synths with sonar (i.e: dim pro, rap. , SD3....)

Oh I think I see the problem. Are you clicking the step sequencer button that is actually IN the SD3 GUI? It's at the top right corner of the GUI and that will open a step sequencer for whatever synth/VST you are using. Cheers.

hmm... actually rereading that it sounds like that is what you are doing. My apologies. If that is how you are doing it I don't know what the problem could be. It works for me. Good luck.
