Session singers: When to use "Featuring x" in song title

Hi all,

General query for those who have more experience.  I have a number of songs in the works with various session singers.  I have written the Lyrics, Melody and music and so I use these session singers as a "Work for Hire" basis and pay a one off fee for the final raw files.

One thing I'm curious on, is when to use or not use there names in the song title.  When I see the likes of Massive attack, Zero7 etc, they never seem to credit there vocalists in the song title.

I will give credits on inlays or website but I'm not so sure in the song title itself.  I hope to get some advise on this as some singers may have different ideas.

Thanks for any replies ;>

Did the work for hire agreement specify crediting the singer? If not, it's totally up to you.

Many folks here will ask about singers if the singers are really good.
Aside from that..... I think it's a courtesy to credit the singer by name when it is possible, but it is not a requirement.

Watch the credits or music on the next movie you see.  Sometimes the singers get credit and sometimes they do not.  Singers almost never get credit for songs in TV shows. Likely because there is not enough time during credits to do so on TV.

    just my 2 cents

Interesting.  No specific mention of how they get credited so I'm more wondering about the song title line itself.  I've no problem crediting them anywhere but on the title line itself i'm not so sure.

To me it suggests that they may have written the lyrics.

    This is my take:

I pretty much agree with Herb. You're also correct that the feature artist (singer/rapper) contributes lyrics, but they also may contribute music. (ie: Rob Thomas f/ Santana)

"Title line?" IKWYM, but generally that line is only for that.

Artist line may be what you mean.

Often times, when you hear interviews, the main artist(s) or featured ones, will give props to the particular part in the song or complement how the featured artist they're chosen fits with what they've constructed (There could be a million or so stories of how they came together for the track(s) (Label mates, personal experiences, vibe/tone, etc) Likewise, when the feature artist is interviewed.

It's up to you, but do ask them before adding their names because they may not want that.

    Title of the song
    Artist/Singer
    Writers

That gives credit, where credit is due.
